ICT Debate Year 11 have been debating the ethical issues surrounding the production and use of 3D printers in modern society. Many interesting points were raised, with all students demonstrating a fantastic ability to debate their points well, whilst also remaining respectful and understanding of others. We were also joined by Mrs Gray who had many wonderful things to say about the discussion. Overall, a fantastic experience for all. Well done Year 11! Ms Alexander Baines

Southlands Students are making a difference This week, it has been really inspiring to see the students, across the Primary School, using their own water bottles, at playtime and lunchtimes, and making an effort to ditch the plastic cup after last week’s assembly. Here are just some examples from the week of how environmentally friendly we are being. Mr Richard Hough

Year 3S ‘Animal Adaptations’ This term, Year 3 have been learning all about animal adaptations. On Tuesday, 3S took a tour of Southlands to find all the different habitats around the school and think about how an animal would need to change in order to live in each one. We were lucky enough to see some genuine Southlands wildlife, including a very sneaky lizard! The children were very excited to see the habitats in real life and are looking forward to learning about habitats beyond Southlands. Ms Laurel Speirs

Year 5TC Natural Disasters Topic This term we have been studying Natural Disasters in our topic lessons. This week, we have been studying the different names and parts of a volcano and have started to create our own! Look out for explosive results later this term. Miss Rebecca Taylor-Critchley

Science in Year 6 Year 6C have been studying the respiratory and circulatory system. We had a blast making 3-D lungs. Check it out! Ms Laura Cahall, Year 6C

We Science! Here are just a few examples of the amazing work

that students in Year 6H completed for their homework this week. We have been studying the heart and some students were tasked with making a model of the human organ while others researched the inner workings of the organ itself. Year 6H, Mr Richard Hough

Year 7 & 8 P.E. We had a fantastic lesson this morning at Eschilo involving football with Year 7 and 8. I was very proud of all the students. I witnessed great teamwork, superb effort and it was really amazing to see students from both year 7 and 8 doing sports together so successfully. Well done to all. Ms Alex Baines, Head of P.E.

Beatricie Pistola Year 13 IB Student Beatrice Pistola will be pursuing journalism in the UK after Southlands. Attached is a piece of writing she has done regarding the blood donation event this week. https://www.thomsonmedical.com/article/busting-blood-

donation-myths/

Southlands has always tried to contribute to the local

community and be a good example not only for the people

who work or study with us, but also for the surrounding area.

This is why, on specific calendar dates, it is now possible to donate blood in school. In the past week, 40

people donated blood in the school and gave something vital back to health services we all rely on.

The next donation will be on the 26th March 2020.

Blood donation is considerably important in maintaining an adequate blood supply in hospitals serving our

community. It secures enough blood for the transfusions patients need. Donating is a safe and simple

process, as well as a highly appreciated contribution to help others. The people you would be able to help

with the donation are mainly cancer patients, people who suffer from anaemia, premature babies, mothers

experiencing labour complications and those unfortunately involved in an accident.1

Some facts about donating blood

Donating blood not only helps the people in need, but it can also have a great impact on yourself: it reduces

stress, improves mental wellbeing, enhances the production of new blood cells, reduces symptoms of heart

attack, lowers cholesterol level, benefits your physical health and aids to get rid of negative feelings or

isolation.2

To meet the demand for blood, we would need nearly 400 new donors per day, 135000 per year to

substitute the ones who are no longer able to and 30000 volunteers with priority blood types such as O

negative per year. Your contribution would really make a significant difference as with a single donation of

blood, you help to save the lives of up to three people. 3

To donate blood you need to make sure you are eligible. For different reasons, in the past week, we have

had candidates who were willing to donate but were not able to.

Your age should vary between 18 and 60 years old.

Your weight should be more than 50kgs.

Your blood pressure must be stable.

You cannot be pregnant or suffering from minor/major diseases.

According to Italian law, you cannot donate if you have been to Africa in the past 6 months. 4

In case you are interested, you can contact the office or speak to the nurses to make sure you are eligible.

We are an IB school and will continue to reach out in order to build an IB community of people who think

and act to improve the world continually for themselves and others.

If you are interested in joining the Football Club on Tuesdays, we still have a few places left, but they are going fast. Richard Hough Football Coach KS3 Maths puzzle of the month is back! Following on from last year's monthly Maths competition for Key Stage 3, here is the first puzzle for 2019/2020. This one is Sudoku with a twist, as you first need to write numbers in the grid by using the clues, which are multiples of the squares either side. Students can collect the puzzle from S1 and prizes will be on offer for winning solutions submitted. Enjoy!

Lunchtime Recorder Club & Orchestra This Wednesday, eleven students attended Lunchtime Recorder Club & Orchestra. Nine students are pictured on the photograph and later they were joined by two more students as we moved from the Music Room to the Gym. I was delighted to see the Orchestra resume its usual size. Orchestra takes place every Wednesday lunchtime at 1pm. It begins in the Music room and moves to the Gym. Mr Manenti then uses the Music room for those students who are interested in private piano lessons. NACE Music Club has now moved to Tuesday after school and I would encourage more students to attend, especially older students with a background in Music. This club is essentially to prepare for the NACE Music Festival. It is not intended for students below Year 2. In Key Stage Three, students are auditioning for the main dance parts in CATS. During Music lessons they are becoming familiar with four main songs from the show and in Drama they are looking at a poetic narrative to open the show. Stay tuned... Mr Snape Head of Music
