Name: Tom CousinsAge: 24
Lives: Attleborough, NorfolkNickname: Tomcat
Returns to Blackpool as defending champion thanksto an epic win over Craig Waddingham 12 monthsago. And ‘TC’s’ victory was well deserved as he beatthe likes of Stephen Dempsey, Gavin Lomax,Giuseppe D’Imperio and Rob Wharne en route to hisultimate 11-10 success to claim a £6,000 first prize.Such was his delight at potting the final 8-Ball,Cousins jumped into the crowd to celebrate hisvictory.
Cousins has always been one of the game’s leadinglights and this first world title certainly confirmed allthe expectation. It has been six years since the
holder returned to the Fylde Coast to make asuccessful defence but Cousins has the game tosucceed. Now living in Norfolk, Cousins was brought up inHereford and honed his skills with his dad, Steve. He was and still is a very hand snooker player witha best practice break of 147.
Cousins could be running into form just at the righttime for his defence. He enjoyed his best run to datein this year’s UK Tour by reaching the final of the lastevent at Daventry only to run into in-form, PhilHarrison.
Name: John RoeAge: 34
Lives: Yaxley, PeterboroughNickname: Roey
John Roe returns to Blackpool looking to get backthe title he won in 2012. The Peterborough cue mandefeated England captain, Lee Kendall, 11-7 in thefinal but couldn’t successfully defend his crown.Roe, a former National amateur champion, won twomatches, including victory over Malta’s ClaytonAttard, before suffering an 8-5 defeat against MarcFleming in the last 16.Roe is still waiting to re-discover his world titlewinning form in 2014, reached the last 32 of theopening UK Tour before losing to Steve Martin andsuffering a last 64 exit against Ian Ali at Tour Two.However, England international Roe was a quarter-
finalist at the European Championship, just missinga last four spot as Scotland’s Pat McCarron wentthrough 7-6.He was also a member of the England side thatcaptured the team prize, including an 8-7 finalvictory over Malta. Closer to home, Roe was amember of the Court Pool and Snooker Club thatfinished runners-up to Rileys XL of Worcester in theGolden Cue competition at Vauxhall Holiday Park,Great Yarmouth.Needs an extended run in Blackpool to make sure ofa top eight seeding for 2015.Tour.
Name: Giuseppe D’ImperioAge: 21
Lives: TwickenhamNickname: G-Force
Moves up from five to third seed this year and will belooking to maintain his year on year improvement.Reached the quarter-finals in 2013, twice winningby the odd frame in 15, before losing 9-7 toeventual winner, Tom Cousins, in the quarter-finals.
Twelve months earlier, ‘G-Force’ was on cue tobecome one of the game’s youngest ever worldchampions. He reached the last four before comingup against Lee Kendall and eventually losing 10-5.However, D’Imperio, a runner-up to golden oldie,Keith Brewer, at the 2013 European Championships, certainly has the game to challenge for the title. A
former World Junior finalist, D’Imperio, who haspreviously studied accountancy, was a member ofthe victorious British Lions squad that travelled toAustralia last year.He played his part in helping the Lions protect their100 percent winning record with seven victories, including two in the fifth and final test over BenNunan and Jake McCartney, as the visitors wrappedup a 3-2 series success.
Currently 13th on the UK Tour rankings and equalfourth with Tom Cousins in the Premier Leaguestandings after six wins from his nine outings.
Name: Karl O’DonoghueAge: 24
Lives: Laytown, County MeathNickname: Jackal
The Irishman has been a quarter-finalist for the pasttwo years and would love to take the next step andeven go on to emulate Greg Farren as a Republic ofIreland singles world champion.A regular Blackpool visitor, O’Donoghue’s perform-ances have seen him rise from seventh seed in 2013to fourth seed this time.
Won three singles games last year before was haltedby Rob Wharne 9-5. In 2012, O’Donoghue put outthe likes of Lee Anderson and Keith Brewer beforegoing down to Guiseppe D’Imperio. He arrives on the Fylde Coast in excellent spirits
after winning the Irish Pool Championships fromnearly 300 entries at Ennis in County Clare. And he did it the hard way, defeating Paul Dunne 9-8 in the penultimate round and then edging outDeclan Hough 10-9 in the final. O’Donoghue wasrunner-up to John Columb in the 2013 final.
First made his mark in Blackpool four years agowhen he became World Under 21 champion defeat-ing Temujin Dixon 8-7 in the final. It was 1996 whenFarren defeated another Irish international, TonyHolgate, to claim his world title. Can O’Donoghuebridge an 18 year gap?

Name: Ben NunanAge: 30
Lives: MelbourneNickname: Big Time
The only overseas player to force his way into thetop eight seeds for 2014 but hanging onto the eliteby his fingertips. However, it’s good to see him back as part of astrong Australian squad after a couple of yearsabsence.Nunan’s best World Championship came in 2011when he reached the semi-finals, threatening toemulate compatriot Quinten Hann who lifted thetrophy in 1999.He was also a quarter-finalist in 2006, losing to MarkSelby, as the reigning world snooker championshowed his skills at the small table game by winningthe title at his one and only attempt.
Nunan finished runner-up to Kurt Dunham at lastyear’s Aussie Nationals but gave the eventual cham-pion a testing match that went to a deciding 19thframe. In the semi-finals, Nunan from the state ofVictoria, knocked out Tasmanian, Justin Van Deipen10-7.Represented Australia against the British Lions in2013 but by his own high standards didn’t achieveas many wins as he would have wanted.A quarter-finalist in the 2012 Oceania snookerchampionship and a pool winner in 2010. Played inthe 2012 Six Red World Championships in Thailandwhen drawn in the same section as Shaun Murphyand Steve Davis.
Name: Rob WharneAge: 28
Lives: StaffordNickname:
Seventh seed Wharne defeated some high calibreopponents, including Lee Kendall, Michael Hope andKarl O’Donoghue has he enjoyed a best ever WorldChampionship 12 months ago.
But Wharne, a runner-up to Neil Raybone at the2011 World Masters, couldn’t get any further as helost to eventual champion, Tom Cousins.
Wharne is currently 14th on the UK Tour rankingsafter three events but has the capacity to rise muchhigher by the end of the year.Indeed, the respected Staffordshire player captured
the 2010 National Amateur singles title and is aformer Club Open champion. One of his career highlights came in the World Mas-ters three years ago, beating Craig Waddingham inthe quarter-finals and twice former world champion,Mick Hill, in the semi-finals. But his bid for the titlewas halted by Willenhall rival Raybone who scoopeda £5,000 first prize courtesy of a 10-5 victory.Wharne, an accomplished snooker player, was arelatively latecomer to the pool scene. Three yearsafter taking up the game seriously he won theStaffordshire singles title beating Andy Slack in thefinal.
Name: Lee KendallAge: 44
Lives: Stoke On TrentNickname: The Fox
Already had plenty to celebrate this year as hisbeloved Arsenal came from 2-0 down to beat mightyHull City to win the FA Cup at Wembley.
So, will the Staffordshire veteran be picking up hisown trophy at the Imperial Hotel by the end of thetournament?
Twice a world singles finalist-15 years apart - theEngland captain is back again for another crack atthe title. It is going to be a tough ask for the longserving international but he showed last season byreaching the World Masters final that you rightKendall off at your peril.
Bitterly disappointed to throw away a winning leadagainst Malta’s Antoine Cuschieri in the final, henevertheless displayed bags of skill and experienceto get within one match of a major prize again.
A former Home International champion, Kendalltook over the England team captaincy in 1999 buthas played at the World Championship since itsinception in 1993. A remarkable record. Currentlysixth on the Premier League ladder and 10th on theUK Tour standings.
Not to be confused with Lee Kendall, the goalkeep-ing coach of the England Women’s football team!
Name: Craig WaddinghamAge: 26
Lives: ScunthorpeNickname: Man With No Nickname
Played his part in one of the sport’s most memorableworld finals last year when he took eventual winner,Tom Cousins, to a 21st and deciding frame.
And that followed his tournament debut in 2010when he defeated the likes of three-time worldjunior champion, Darren Matthew, Karl Sutton andformer world champion, Jason Twist, to reach thesemi-finals.
In 2013, the dad of two powered into the finaldropping only 12 frames from the last 32 onwards, including an impressive 10-5 semi-final success over
unknown South African, Charl Jonck.Waddingham’s bid to take the extra step this yearhas been made tougher by the returns of formerwinners: Mick Hill, Phil Harrison and Adam Davies. But he is currently topping the Premier League tableon the UK Tour with eight wins from his 10 gamesAnd Waddingham is also hot on the heels of PhilHarrison in the UK Tour rankings, beating Europeanchampion Ben Flack on his way to victory over GavinLomax in the Tour One final. The talented lefthander is also a useful snooker player and can oftenbe found playing for Clee Cons in his local league.

There is a distinct sense of déjàvu about the introduction tothis article about our mainmen’s contenders for the 2014World Championship. But itremains as relevant as it did in2012 and 2013.
So, here we go. It was sug-gested last year’s tournamentthat it would be the most openfor years and so there is everyreason the 2014 version isgoing to be equally tough tocall.
And how could it be otherwisewith the return of three of themost gifted 8-ballers ever topick up a cue. So welcomeback: Mick Hill, Phil Harrisonand Adam Davis. Indeed, tothat list you can also add RobChilton who has earned hisplace via the customary toughqualification route.
This quartet wouldn’t look outof place as the competition’stop four seeds and someplayers in the draw suffer anunwanted surprise when thepairings were made.
Hill is back after a three yearabsence to chase his thirdworld crown. The Black Countyborn star captured his firsttitle in 2005 but had to waitanother five years beforedoubling up his success.
Many 8-Ball Pool observersbelieve it’s still scant rewardsfor his talents and this is achance to add to his haul andmatch Gareth Potts’ records ofthree crowns.
Harrison had to wait patientlyfor his chance to become aworld title contender and therehave been fewer popular win-
ners than the Cambridgeshirecueman’s triumph in 2009.
Harrison is in red hot formthis year and has won two ofthe first three UK Tours, alsowinning Challenge Tour threefor good measure.
Davis was often overshadowedby Potts’ exploits but came ofage in 2011 when defeatingHarrison to become worldchampion for the one and onlytime.
Chilton has never contesteda world final but has amasseda plethora of major honoursduring his career and certainlycan’t be dismissed as acontender.
Ben Flack wouldn’t look outof place as a leading seed butfor some reason, as yetundiscovered, he hasn’t lefthis mark on the Worlds. TheBristol star lost against MattBrierley in the last 32 twelvemonths ago but has sinceshown his class by becomingEuropean champion in Maltaearlier this year at the expenseof Ireland’s Rob Brady.
Flack was also Euro runner-upto Jack Pople in 2012; Popleanother player who hasn’tfulf i l led his potential atBlackpool in recent years. Hedid progress to the last 16 in2013 but was halted by one ofthe tournament’s surprisestars, Charl Jonck.
South African Jonck tookeveryone by surprise in reach-ing the semi-finals beforefalling 10-5 to Craig Wadding-ham. Sadly, Jonck isn’t ableto book a return trip to the Im-perial Hotel but Waddingham is

AFTER EIGHT? BLACKPOOLSEEDS LOOKING OVER THEIR SHOU
men’s
definitely back to try and goone better than last year.
Waddingham, previously aBlackpool semi-finalist, playedhis part in a memorable finalagainst Tom Cousins, justcoming up short in a matchthat went the distance.
Jonck’s absence al lowedAustralian, Ben Nunan, toclaim the eighth and final seed-ing position. And there is aqueue of decent players behindNunan all with an opportunityto become seeds in their ownright next year.
Scotland’s Marc Fleming is oneof those sniffing a top eightspot, He showed his pedigreelast year by ousting thendefending champion, John Roe,8-5 in the last 16 beforeWaddingham ended his inter-est.
Only Quinten Hann in 1999 hastaken the men’s trophy outsidethe UK and the Republic ofIreland. But the controversialAustral ian might lose hisrecord this year if reportscoming out of the land DownUnder have any credence.
Nunan, as mentioned earlier, isone of the Aussies hunting thefirst prize. John ‘Rusty’Wheeler was a quarter-finalistin 2012 and will captain theGreen and Golds on their latesttrip with Steve Saxon as hisvice-captain.
But the two hot shots to lookout for are Kurt Dunham, there i gn i ng Auss i e s i ng l e schampion, and Victorian JakeMcCartney. Dunham defeatedNunan 10-9 in the final afterknocking out fellow Victorian,
McCartney, in the penultimateround.
However, it was McCartneywho topped the Auss i eaverages in last year’s Testseries against the British Lions,w inn i ng n ine o f h i s 15matches. Woods was runner-up with one victory less.
Malta’s emergence as a leadingpool nation in recent seasonshasn’t been translated intoindividual world glory thoughAntoine Cuschieri beat LeeKendall to claim the WorldMasters. So, there wil l bedisappointment that Cuschieriis missing from the Malteseline-up.
Reliable Kevin Mercieca andMiguel Falzon were Euroquarter-finalists this year but itis highly unlikely a Malteseplayer will be crowned worldchampion.
With players from the ReunionIsland retuning for a secondsuccessive season, theseChampionships get ever morecosmopolitan by the year.
Morocco add the Africanflavour, in particular, AmeurAbdelati Riad. He reached thelast 16 in 2012 and has beensteadily improving his pool ed-ucation by attending this sea-son’s UK Tour events togetherwith some of his countrymen.
So, it really does promise to bea fascinating tournament. Andwhile it is perhaps hard tosee anyone outside the topfour women’s seeds becomingchampion, in the men’s eventthere is every likelihood anunseeded player will emergevictorious.

2013 Ladies World 8 Ball Pool Champion
Emma Cunningham
Ladies Seedsfor the
World Championships 2014Name: Emma Cunningham Lives: Milton KeynesSeed: One Nickname: Emz, WookieTwelve months ago Emma was top seed despitesuffering her worst ever World Championshipperformance the previous year.In 2014, the Newry born cue queen returns to Black-pool, still number one seed but also as the defendingchampion. Victory over England rivals, Barbara Taylorgave the Northern Ireland star her third world title.
And Cunningham, also the reigning European champion,is again the player the rest have to beat if they wantto get their hands on the trophy, especially with thecontinued absence of legendary, Sue Thompson. Butfor Thompson, who retired after the 2012 event,Cunningham would surely have added to her haul ofworld titles.
Cunningham, then still at school, made her WorldChampionship debut back in 2003 reaching the semi-finals - a remarkable achievement. Twelve months latershe went one step further and made the final only to bestopped by Thompson. However, there was no stopping Cunningham in 2005 asshe became the youngest recipient of the prize - atThompson’s expense. It took her time to claim anotherchampionship but she finally managed it in 2011defeating Australian hope, Renata Delahunty, 8-2.
Only four girls can call themselves World ladies singleschampions since the tournament’s inception in 1993:Cunningham, Thompson, Linda Leadbitter and LisaQuick. Can anyone join the exclusive club in 2014?
Name: Lynette Horsburgh Lives: BlackpoolSeed: Two Nickname: Spinney
Up two places on last year’s seedings helped by a run tothe semi-finals of her home tournament. Local girlLynette enjoyed a string of excellent wins 12 monthsago, including a 7-2 victory over former Ladies WorldMasters champion, Sharon Dickson, in the quarter-finals.
However, the 2008 champion couldn’t get the better ofBarbara Taylor in the semi-finals and missed out on afinal appearance against Emma Cunningham.
It was Taylor; Horsburgh had put to the sword in 2008to claim her solitary world championship. But theLancashire star, partner of 9-Ball star, Karl Boyes, has
always been a consistent performer, juggling a full-timejob as a BBC journalist and motherhood. With a hectic lifestyle, the ‘pocket rocket’ doesn’t get asmuch opportunity to practice as much as she would like. However, her natural ability and snooker backgroundensures she is usually in contention for the big prizes.
In the last three years, Horsburgh has contested twosemi-finals and one quarter-final. She was also runner-up to Sue Thompson in the 2012 Ladies World Mastersand in 2005 defeated Emma Cunningham 6-5 to becomeEuropean champion.
Name: Barbara Taylor Lives: RainhamSeed: Three Nickname: Babs
If Jimmy White was snooker’s World Championship‘nearly man’ then perhaps Taylor is pool’s female equiv-alent. The ‘Whirlwind’ was a six-time Crucible runner-up while England star Taylor has twice been a losingfinalists, including last year to Emma Cunningham. The Kent star, with strong Liverpool roots, suffered anunwanted case of déjà vu at this year’s spectacularEuropean Championships in Malta. Again she progressedto a major final-her third appearance in a Euro singlesfinal- only to lose 7-3 to Cunningham.
But the popular international, who took over the cap-taincy of the England ladies’ side at last season’s Cham-pionships after Jackie Baker’s retirement, isn’t always
the bridesmaid. She was Europe’s top female cueist in2003, whitewashing Clare Seaman 6-0 in the final, Na-tional Ladies singles champion in 2002 and 2006 whilealso claiming the 2005 Home Internationals crown.
Taylor also has numerous European and World teamtitles to her name and was a key player as Englanddefeated Cunningham’s Northern Ireland 8-4 in thisyear’s Euro final.
Having suffered world team final defeat to their Ulsterrivals in 2013, Taylor would love to guide the hosts torevenge at the end of this tournament.
Name: Sharon Wright Lives: WalsallSeed: Four Nickname:
A new face among the top four seeds this year based onher results in 2012 and 2013. But it was close as Wrightvied strongly with Collette Henriksen, Sharon Dicksonand Jackie Baker for the fourth spot.
Certainly no-one would begrudge Wright her place asshe has become one of the most consistent performersin the ladies game. Caused a major shock in 2012 bytoppling Emma Cunningham 6-5 in the last 32.
Her excellent form didn’t stop there and she wonanother three matches to earn a place in the finalagainst Sue Thompson. Unfortunately for Wright, shecouldn’t prevent Thompson adding to her collection,
going down 8-3.Twelve months ago, Wright defeated Mandy Booth 6-1and Debbie Europa of South Africa 6-2 to secure a last16 meeting against Sharon Dickson. Here the run endedas Dickson progressed 6-3.
Wright, who plays her regional pool for West Midlands, also reached the last 16 of this season’s EuropeanChampionships losing 5-4 to Northern Ireland’s Jo Kent.Arguably her finest moment came in 2012 when shedefeated Hannah Jones 6-2 in the semi-finals and CarlySmith 6-4 in the final to become National Ladies singleschampion..

It used to be around this time ofyear when the cry would go up:‘Who can stop Sue Thompsonbecoming ladies World 8-Ballpool champion?
That refrain has now changed to;‘Who can stop Emma Cunning-ham becoming ladies World 8-Ball pool champion?
With a European title tuckedaway for good measure, theNorthern Ireland star is odds onto be lifting the trophy oncemore.
You will get even less generousodds on the title leaving theBritish Isles for the first timesince the inaugural World Cham-pionship back in 1993.
Elsewhere in this programme, the top four seeds have beenhighlighted and it wouldn’t bestretching the imagination tosuggest the winner will comefrom this quartet.
One girl who wil l definitelydisagree with that statementis Sunderland hot shot andEngland international EmmaWilkinson.
‘Wilko’ looks to have the gameand the big match temperamentto challenge for at least a firstever final appearance.
Tenth seed Wilkinson showed herclass 12 months ago by becom-ing the fifth different winner ofthe ladies’ World Masters in eightyears courtesy of a gripping 6-5victory over Kirsty Davies. TheNorth East hope, a World Mas-
ters’ runner-up in 2011, hadalready won the European title afew months earlier.
However, Wilkinson tamelysurrendered her Euro crown inMalta earlier this year, losing inthe last 32 against Natalie Bunceand hasn’t been as sharp at theWorld Championships.
She reached the quarter-finals in2012 before losing to 2008champion, Lynette Horsburghand 12 months ago knocked outLaura Pearce and Sharron Brownbefore losing 6-3 to ColletteHenriksen in the last 16.
Certainly, Henriksen, an annualBlackpool visitor, can usually beexpected to put up a substantialchallenge. The ‘Smiling Assassin’is a former World semi-finalistand seeded fifth for this year’scompetition ahead of SharonDickson and Jackie Baker.
Welsh prospect Rachel Tuckerwas a semi-finalist two years agowhile compatriot, Kirsty Davies, enjoyed an extended run 12months ago, only losing to even-tual champion, Cunningham, inthe last four.
Northern Ireland are reigningladies world team championsand provide two dangerousplayers in the singles draw:twice European Championshiprunner-up, Michelle Rooney, andJo Kent. Both have points toprove after respective 6-0 de-feats last year against MichelleBrown and Lynette Horsburgh.

O’Brien, won the 2010 Europeantitle and can’t be underestimatedwhile Lyndsey McKellar and JodieHolt provide substantial back-upfor the Scottish challenge led byHorsburgh.
Given the lack of a consistentoverseas challenge down theyears, organisers were heart-ened last year by the perform-ances of South African duo,Nuraan Jedaar and Amy-ClaireKing. Indeed, watch out for Kingafter showing a year on yearimprovements.
In 2012, the 23-year-old formerNational Ladies 8-Ball championfrom Boksburg, marked herWorld Championship debut byreaching the last 16. Last year, she cued her way to the quartersbefore losing 7-4 againstBarbara Taylor.
“It will be truly amazing if I canwin the singles tournament,”said King who has playedregional pool for EasternGauteng since the age of 13.
“No South African lady has everdone it so it will be a massiveachievement. Of course it will bedifficult but I am certainly readyfor the challenge.”
Jedaar, runner-up to Debbie Eu-ropa in the 2005 SA NationalChampionships, has more expe-rience and made people takenote in 2013 as she too qualifiedfor the quarters. On the way, shedefeated experienced English in-ternational and 2014 Europeansemi-finalist, Lyndsey Roberts.
However, the West Cape repre-sentative came unstuck 7-2 inthe quarters against KirstyDavies. Jedaar was a quarter-finalist in this year’s SA’sNationals won by Sasha LeeAmsterdam against Blackpoolhopeful, King.
Australian hopes will largely restwith the outstanding LyndallHulley. In 2005 she was one ballaway from becoming the secondAustralian to make the final afterNatalie Froling.
The South Australian star is thereigning Aussie champion afterbeating another Blackpool hope-ful, Kolbe Poole, 9-5 in the final.Fiona Plummer, the Tasmaniansingles champion from 2009-2012, isn’t without a chancewhile Renata Delahunty, seeded12, can’t be discounted.Delahunty emulated Froling byreaching the 2011 final whereEmma Cunningham ended herdream. There is certainly an expandinginternational flavour to thisyear’s event which will see thesingles debuts of Keri Lowe fromNew Zealand and Eastbournebased, Portuguese prospect,Alexandra Cunho.
However, despite the calibre ofthe challengers it’s hard to seean unseeded player emergingfrom behind the 8-ball to chal-lenge the established stars.
However, it would certainly begood for the tournament and theladies familiar pecking order, ithappened.

2013 Junior World 8 Ball Pool Champion
Carl Martin

ADVERT
It gives me great pleasure to againsponsor the Junior World 8 Bal lChampionships in Blackpool this year. Lastyear was the fifth year that we havesponsored this event and we are veryhappy & proud to be able to be associatedwith this important event again. I eagerlyawait to see who can pick up the trophythis year, will it be another new face? Orwill Carl Martin be able to successfullydefend his title?
We see this event as being hugelysignificant and extremely important torecognise the up and coming stars of thefuture. The pool is usually uninhibited, exciting and played with the confidencethat I am sure will generate future WorldChampions.
Strachan have a long history with cues-ports in Blackpool dating back to the dayswhen the professional World SnookerQualifiers were held at the NorbreckCastle in the 1990’s. Since then Blackpoolhas become a Mecca for English Pool andwe have developed a strong bond andfriendship with the English 8 ball eliteplayers and their governing bodies theEnglish Pool Association and the World 8Ball Pool Federation.
In these difficult financial times we see thepub industry having a very tough time ofit with pubs still closing down each andevery week in the UK. It is great to see
that despite these tough times the gameof English 8 ball strong and thriving at alllevels. This is down to the quality of thegame itself, the enthusiasm of the playersand also as a result of the tireless work ofthe various national and internationalbodies.
The World Championships, which we seeas the absolute pinnacle of the sport neverdisappoints and continues to deliverunrivalled drama and excitement. We areproud to be associated with thesechampionships for well over ten years andsupply very best 6811 cloth to give theplayer the best possible speed, touch andcontrol, all combining to give ultimateplaying conditions. The tournamentpackage of Strachan Cloth, Supremetables and Aramith balls make a perfectplaying surface for the finest players in theworld.
It just remains for me now to thank all ofthe players who play and train each dayon Strachan cloth and to wish all theplayers in this years World Championshipsall the very best of luck.
Enjoy your pool.Stuart GardinerEuropean Sales Manager.
