A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT It gives me much pleasure to present the 2009/10 Softball Queensland (SQ) Incorporated Annual Report. This is my first report since being elected as

President in July 2009. While honoured, taking on this role was also a daunting prospect, especially when you consider the legends of our game who have fulfilled this role in the past. It would be remiss of me not to comment directly on the significant contribution made by Dennis Cullen, our immediate past President. Dennis stood down from the role in July to meet his commitments as a member of the Softball Australia Limited (SAL) Board of Directors. In his new role, Dennis will continue to contribute to our great sport and Queensland will reap the benefits through his involvement. Dennis has played a lead role in ensuring that SQ is effectively managed having regard to financial probity, good governance and effective working relationships state wide. Softball has been through significant change in the last 12 months. At a national level, SAL has been established and a Board of Directors has been elected and is being led by former Australian Representative, Jenny Holliday. A new SAL Chief Executive Officer, Sue Noble, has also been appointed. A new Constitution and Strategic Plan have been formulated in order to lead the sport into a new and exciting future. SQ is working closely with SAL to support the achievement of the goals and objectives in the new Strategic Plan and, to this end, SQ Board Members and Staff have joined a number of SAL Working Parties and Committees. At a local level, SQ has embarked on a significant reform agenda of its own which includes:

The drafting of a new Constitution (Rules and By-Laws);

A refocussing of the Board away from operational towards strategic issues;

Establishment of an Authority and Delegation Policy;

Reviewing the structure of the SQ Office to better support the sport’s operations;

Development of the “Kickstart Softball” Strategy to support growth in both current and new areas.

SQ has recently been audited by the Queensland Government and we achieved a very positive outcome. This is a credit to the Board, past and present, the staff in the Office and everyone else who contributes to the management of our sport across Queensland. The Auditors have identified a few minor issues which the Board and Executive Committee are addressing through our Reform Agenda. On the representative front this year, SQ representative teams were unable to win the championships on offer. Notwithstanding, our teams performed well and were a credit to us all. SQ continues to have large numbers selected in Australian teams and squads. I would particularly like to congratulate those Queensland Men in the Australian team which secured the World Championship this year. There continues to be a number of significant issues that we will need to address over the next year, but I believe that the structure and framework we have in place in Queensland will support successful outcomes. Thank you all for your ongoing support and commitment. Mark Jeppesen President

OUR YEAR IN REVIEW Softball in Queensland started the year with two significant milestones. The first was the election of the 7th President in its history, Mark Jeppesen from Maryborough SA. The second was the historic World Championship win by the Aussie Steelers, of which five players are Queenslanders. Mark will lead softball in Queensland through a period of change including the development of a new Constitution and Strategic Plan and reforms to both the governance and office to better meet the needs of a State sporting organisation. Steve Armitage was elected to the QSA Board in September 2009 to fill the ten month casual vacancy created by Mark’s election as President. Changes also occurred in the office when in April 2010 Andrea Johnstone, Junior Participation Development Officer, resigned her position and Nicole Molander was appointed as her replacement. Desleigh Armitage retired due to ill health and Joy Leach assumed the role of Database Manager. On a brighter note, Kim James and Joan Jackson will celebrate ten years employment with Softball Queensland (SQ) during this year. It is timely to acknowledge the many members of the Softball Queensland family for their support and contribution to the sport. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers at all levels of the sport and to the SQ Board, staff, members of the Operational Committees, Technical Directorates, Awards Panel, Commissioners, Appeals Panel and Member Protection Officers. Our sincere appreciation is also extended to our consultants, Major League Corporate Marketing, and lawyer, Basil Wright, for their continued support. It was disappointing to receive the news that Softball was not selected as a sport for inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games but encouraging that the International Softball Federation responded by scheduling World Championships for both Open and Under 19’s divisions every 2nd year commencing in 2012.

The Association remains financially strong and stable but the Board is conscious that changes in government policy at both the state and federal level can significantly affect our sport. Softball Queensland, as well as member associations and clubs, have been supported financially by the Queensland Government for a substantial number of years. Over the past few months, the Queensland Government has undertaken a review of all funding programs and the Minister for Sport, Hon Phil Reeves, advised of the new suite of programs in March 2010. The new programs include:

Infrastructure: Minor (open 2010), Medium and Major (Opening 2011)

Active Inclusion: Club (opens 2 x per year)

Active Inclusion: Community (opens 2 x per year)

Local Sport and Recreation Jobs Plan (opens 2010)

State Sport & Recreation Organisation Development Program for 2011 – 2013 (opens April 2010)

Member Associations are encouraged to apply for funding to support the development and delivery of softball. Softball Queensland will be taking a strategic approach when applying for funding through the Active Inclusion (Community) and Local Sport and Recreation Jobs Plan funding programmes. Consultation will occur with the member associations to determine the most beneficial approach for each association to take to ensure all members access funding through the Local Jobs Plan. In some cases this may mean forming strategic partnerships with other softball organisations, other sports, local councils or community clubs. The Queensland Government, Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation Services (SRS) selected Softball Queensland as one of a number of sporting organisations to be audited in 2010. The audit sought verification of:

Expenditure of Sport and Recreation Development Program funds in accordance with the Guidelines and Funding Agreement;

Achievement of negotiated outcomes, including the appropriateness of the key

performance indicators and the validity of measurement methods

Effectiveness and appropriateness of the organisation’s governance, management and financial systems, including recommendations for improvement;

Adherence to and approved anti-doping policy (if relevant)

The audit was completed in April 2010 and a report, together with recommendations for improvement, was submitted to SRS and Softball Queensland. The report verified that SQ had met the components of the audit and stated; “The Queensland Softball Association Inc, trading as Softball Queensland (SQ) is a very professional and well managed State sporting association. In recent times the governance and leadership of SQ appears to have been very effective and stable. There has been a continuity of high quality people involved at both the board level and executive management.” Softball Queensland sincerely thanks the Queensland Government, Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation Services for their continued support of softball. The financial support they provide for organisational development and priority initiatives allows softball to grow and continue to provide participation and employment opportunities in our sport. Community Participation Softball has a well structured long term participation pathway which caters for the fastpitch softball enthusiasts, social and recreational participants and those who wish to embark on a journey to state and national representation. There is a place for everyone in our game regardless of age, gender, ability or culture and whether you are a player, coach, official, administrator or supporter. It is a ‘way of life’ for some and a recreational activity for others. Research tells us that people move in and out of our game at varying times during their life depending on their circumstances at the time. Our member associations and their affiliated clubs are well placed to deliver traditional softball as it has been passed down from generation to generation. The challenge now is to improve and expand our range of products and services to grow our sport. Softball Queensland has implemented a

marketing program aimed at raising the profile of softball throughout the state and provide member associations with marketing resources that they and their affiliated clubs can use to recruit new participants. Introductory and recruitment programs have been developed, and competitions targeted at social and recreational participants have been conducted by Softball Queensland. In the past twelve months, OzPitch (the national brand name for slowpitch softball) has been conducted in the Springfield Lakes, Greenbank, Beaudesert, Dalby and Kingaroy areas. In addition, Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Gladstone Associations have held slowpitch softball competitions which had a blend of fastpitch players and new slowpitch recruits. 546 participants have participated in these competitions. Simple Softball is the junior recruitment program developed by Softball Queensland which Softball Australia has adopted as the basis for the new National Junior Recruitment Program, “Batter-Up Softball”. 232 participants have participated in Simple Softball programs delivered by District Associations, clubs and the Softball Queensland Development Officers. It is pleasing to see the growth and development of softball in the new areas through the OzPitch and / or Simple Softball products. In the next twelve months, these products will be launched in Chinchilla and other areas in Queensland where softball isn’t currently being played. Some of these competitions will be delivered by partner organisations and others by Softball Queensland. District Associations are encouraged to discuss with Softball Queensland the options available and how they can be supported in delivering these initiatives.

One new marketing initiative is the Have-A-Go Day (HAG) in which Softball Queensland partners with Hockey Queensland and a District Association or club. The events are organised by Softball Queensland marketing consultants, Major League Corporate Marketing and delivered by softball and hockey. Three HAG Days were held in 2009, the first was at North Lakes, a new growth suburb north of Brisbane. This assisted in the establishment of a new softball club in the area, Lakers. Lakers Club is affiliated with Redcliffe SA and recruited more than 20 new junior players from the day. The second HAG Day was held at Everton Park, targeting participants for Brisbane clubs. Both of these events were sponsored by Quest Newspapers and local businesses. The third day was held in Townsville with 12 participants signing on for a Simple Softball program at the completion of the event. In 2010-11 HAG Days are scheduled for Ipswich, Logan City, Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton. There is a need for softball to raise its profile and remain relevant in the education sports curriculum. Not all Education Queensland Regional Sports Officers are supportive of softball, particularly for boys, with some declining to enter teams in the Primary and Secondary Schoolboys’ State Championships, in spite of having sufficient numbers of qualified staff (both registered teach-ers and softball volunteers) and boys available. Softball Queensland is working with School Sport Softball to change this practice but more assistance is needed from the members of the softball community in providing supporting documentation for a submission to be made to the Minister for Education and the Minister for Sport. District Associations make their facilities available for school softball at all levels and Softball

Queensland is assisting with the delivery of regional, state and national events. One initiative is the allocation of student umpires and scorers for regional and state teams. The Umpiring Technical Directorate undertakes training programs at school events including assessments and examinations. Students can now become accredited umpires through their school involvement. The Scoring Technical Directorate also has undertaken training programs at the Secondary Schoolgirls State Championship which provides student scorers the opportunity to become accredited and be selected to travel with representative teams to events. Softball Queensland continues to deliver the School Pathways and Active After School Care Programmes with 830 students participating during the 2009-10 year. The program is available to District Associations and their clubs to deliver with support provided by Softball Queensland. The Deadlies program is a series of Sports Expos organised by the Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation Services. Softball is one of the sports offered at the Expos and Kelly McKellar-Nathan (former Queensland and Australian representative) is a Deadlies Ambassador. Softball Queensland delivers the softball component with support provided by softballers from the local area. St George and Cape York were two areas where Deadlies programs were conducted in 2009/10. Womensport Queensland was successful in accessing funding from Sport and Recreation Services to conduct sport programs for women on Mornington Island. Following consultation with community members, softball was chosen as their preferred sport. Kim Cooper (former Queensland and Australian representative), together with Joy MacPherson (Mount Isa SA) and Kayla Turner (Cairns SA) visited Mornington Island conducting clinics and games. Softball Queensland and Softball Australia are supporting the program with long term objectives being the establishment of a weekly competition and participation in events.

Development Pathways Softball Queensland’s Development Pathway begins with the Regional Academy Program. The SRS Audit Report stated; “The Audit team was also impressed by the philosophy and practice behind the establishment of Regional Softball Academies throughout Queensland. The Academies provide a focus for player development in the particular region. The structure is driven via the establishment of competent coaching staff and coach education and is supported by good administrative practices and resources provided through SQ. It was considered that such a model could be utilised by other sports to develop sustainable sport specific programs in regional areas of Queensland.” Seven Regional Academies have been established throughout Queensland, each at a different stage of development. Whilst the establishment process is relatively slow, it is essential that all academies adhere to the processes set out to ensure quality programs are delivered and athletes and officials are prepared for the inaugural Under 15 National Regional Championship in 2011. Unearthing The Stars The next step in the pathway is the Unearthing the Stars Program. In 2009, the focus of this stage was on developing pitchers and catchers (battery program) selected from the Under 14 State championships. These young athletes attended a camp under the guidance of Lexie Pearce. The battery program has been extended and support is now provided to all District Associations who are interested in participating. In 2010, approximately 55 athletes will be selected to attend an Under 15 Development Camp being held in June/July. Softball Queensland School of Excellence A SQ School of Excellence will be established and the first target group will be pitchers and catchers (battery) in the Under 17 age group. This program will initially be open to all District Associations but will eventually be restricted to identified athletes. A battery camp for athletes in the Under 17 age group will be held in June 2010. Underpinning Program With the restructure of the elite program over the past eighteen months, Softball Queensland has strengthened the underpinning program comprising the Australian Under 19 squads and

other identified athletes who are eligible for selection in the Under 19 division. The programs are co-ordinated by Lexie Pearce and Brooke Wilkins with coaching delivered by state, regional and specialist coaches. As part of the program, Softball Queensland organised training camps with the Australian Under 19 Head Coaches and also built the Queensland Maroon teams which participated in the Southern Cross Challenge. Squad Members are:

Female: Lora Hanson, Stephanie Harm, Olivia MacGinley, Demi Todd, Kayla Turner, Stacey Webber, Eva Carless, Rebecca Chapman, Paige Delacour, Jessica Donnelly, Alexandra Forsyth, Rachel Higgins, Tara Speakman, Mia Boxall, Kelly Crowe.

Male: Lewis Codd, Sam Daff, Mitchell Daly, Matthew Hovi, Marshall Kronk, Lyam McKay, Ryan Merriman, Josh Wagner, Aaron Whitefield, Jono Wall, Carlin Anderson, Jeremy Jemmott.

High Performance / Elite Program Softball is a Partnership Program within the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) structure and as such the responsibility for the delivery of all aspects of our elite program rests with Softball Queensland. The program is co-ordinated by Bronwyn Marshall whose role is to develop and implement the high performance program with the initial key task of coordinating the existing Queensland Heat program in preparation for the 2009-10 representative season. The secondary role was to develop the Under 19 female and male underpinning programs from April to June 2010. Bronwyn brought a huge amount of experience in high performance management to the role. Major improvements in the program occurred with the establishment of administration systems, provision of strong, supportive leadership and communication channels were developed between players and coaches, the AIS program and the Australian coaches. Lachlan Thorburn continued in his program coaching position providing skills training for the athletes. Assistance was provided by Troy McKell and Brooke Wilkins. On the appointment of the coaching staff for the Heat Team, Maryanne Walsh as Head Coach, took over the team training. Lachlan resigned at the end of December when he gained full-time employment. Carefully targeted former players stepped in to fill the gap left by

Lachlan’s resignation. Sandy Lewis and Kim Cooper assisted Maryanne with skill work for the remainder of the Gilley’s Shield season and Mark Gover was recruited as a batting coach. In addition to the skills and team coaches, Vince Kelly was appointed as the Strength and Conditioning coach for the program writing and overseeing the athletes’ gym program and conducting the conditioning sessions. Following the completion of the Gilley’s Shield, the Heat program entered into a reduced workload phase for the Southern Cross Challenge with extra training support being provided for Danielle Stewart, Kylie Cronk and Jodie Bowering in preparation for their World Championship campaign. A review of the Heat coaching staff was conducted and a full review of the program against the recommendations of the High Performance Review will also be undertaken. By this time the QAS should have indicated their intentions regarding funding and the plans for 2010 / 2011 program will be developed. The main focus of the program beyond June 2010 will be to continue the same level of support for the Heat and Under 19 programs and the introduction of an elite men’s program for members of the Australian Men’s Squad and other identified athletes. Fine tuning of all programs will be ongoing and improved planning will be a key aspect as all personnel will be in place well before the 2010-11 representative season commences. Softball Queensland acknowledges the financial support provided by Softball Australia to assist with the travel costs for the teams participating in the Gilley’s Shield. The QAS provides financial support and access to services and facilities for the softball program at both the state and national level. Appreciation is extended to the QAS, led by Bennett King and Barry Dancer, for their on-going support. National Championships: Softball Queensland was unsuccessful in winning a national title in 2009/10 but remained very competitive in a year that saw many games decided by 1 run and a number that went to extra inning. A full list of teams and final placings appear later in this report but special mention goes to the Under 16 Girls and Boys teams who were runner’s

up and to the following individual award winners:

Best Batter Award: Josh Wagner U16 Boys

Best Pitcher Award: Marshall Kronk U16 Boys

Rookie of the Year Award: Shaun Goffer Open Men

Southern Cross Challenge Queensland entered four teams in the 2010 Southern Cross Challenge. The open teams both featured in the Grand Finals with Queensland Heat taking the title and Queensland Patriots being runner’s up to Canterbury Redsox. Queensland Maroon Women finished in 3rd place and the Maroon Men finished in 4th place. The 2009/10 Selection Panels: Women Chairperson: Jenny Vandenhurk Open Women: Maryanne Walsh, Liz Fresser U19 Women: Dion Johannessen, Shane Morgan U16 Girls: Kevin Jenkins, Liz Fresser Men Chairperson: John Bright Open Men: Dene Dormer U19 Men: Steven Anderson, Lexie Pearce U16 Boys: Roline Sheppard, Susan O’Connor The achievements of the teams and individual members don’t come without a strong commitment by a number of people including the coaches, managers, statisticians and in particular the player’s families and team supporters. Softball Queensland sincerely thanks all those involved for their contribution to the success of our teams. Coach Development Softball Queensland has a total of 550 accredited coaches in Queensland with the largest numbers at levels one and two. With Softball Australia still to officially release the Level 3 course, coaches are encouraged to attend workshops delivered by Softball Queensland and external providers to ensure they continue to develop their skills and update their knowledge. Workshops for coaches of all levels were held with Australian Under 19 Head Coaches, John Neilsen and Paula McGovern. Lexie Pearce and Brooke Wilkins once again attended the Softball Australia Pitching School of Excellence held in conjunction with the 2009 Friendship Series. Softball Queensland is supporting State coaches to attend workshops provided by University of Queensland

Softball Queensland is grateful for the support provided by the Queensland Events Regional Program for the 2010 Southern Cross Challenge. The sponsorship provided much needed funds for marketing initiatives aimed at increasing the

number of participating teams and spectators and raising the profile of the event. Softball Queensland extends our sincere appreciation to Queensland Events Regional Program, Dormer’s Sport, (tournament ball) and R.S.V.P. Party Hire (marquees) for their sponsorship of the Southern Cross Challenge. The results of the State Championships, Masters Tournament and Southern Cross Challenge appear further in this report. Softball Queensland sincerely thanks the host associations and the volunteers for making each event such a success. Websites and Social Media The national website and database platform has been redesigned and a new provider engaged. The new platform will be released shortly using a staged roll-out process allowing for training and testing of each component. Softball Queensland has embraced the social media networking site of Facebook. In July 2009, a vivacious Deb McColm attended the QSA Annual Council Meeting as President and Delegate of Brisbane Softball Association. Only fourteen weeks later, Deb lost a short but courageous fight against a rare and aggressive cancer. Deb was a passionate contributor to the delivery of our sport at the club, District Association and State level, always to the highest standard. Her contributions at QSA Annual Council Meetings were always well thought out and based on achieving benefits for our sport as a whole. Deb played our game with the greatest enthusiasm and skill and her commitment to continue making a contribution through leadership and administration after retiring from playing is greatly acknowledged.

OUR YEAR IN REVIEW SC O R I N G TE C H N I C A L D I R E C T O R A T E

Monthly Meetings Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month.

Annual Combined Forum Our 2009 Forum once again was well attended with all Associations being represented by Association personnel.

We adopted a theme for the weekend - “Getting it Right “

Elaine with her award and the Forum attendees

Highlights from the weekend were:

Elaine Rosenberg being presented with her Statistician of the Year award by Ngaire Huston

Session with Darren Sibraa

Presentation by Ngaire Huston on common mistakes and errors

DA reports

DA issues

Grants session with Val Cross

National Events Official Statisticians were provided for the following: Gilley’s Shield Chief Statistician: Matt Denkel

Official Scorers: Val Cross, Joy Leach, Elaine Rosenberg, Bruce Challenor, Kirsty Andrews, Chris Bailey, Fiona Goffer and Chris Bailey

2nd Scorers: Valerie Horne, Chris Griffiths, Narelle

Donald, Jason Collins, Sean Francis, Sue Sanders, Debbie Opie, Debbie Clarke and Shirley Millar

Southern Cross Challenge Chief Statistician: Christine Denkel

Official Scorers: Val Cross, Kate Richards, Joy Leach, Bruce Challenor, Matt Denkel, Fiona Goffer and Trish Davis

2nd Scorers: Narelle Donald, Chris Griffiths, Valerie Horne, Sean Francis, Jason Collins, Kiri Scott, Sue Sanders and Debbie Clarke

The Southern Cross Challenge also provided the opportunity for our up and coming scorers to experience scoring with a State team by being rostered to score with the Queensland Maroon teams that competed.

It is pleasing to see the number of new faces joining the ranks of official scoring.

Kirsty Andrews being appointed to score for the Australian U19 Women at this tournament can also be seen as a step towards her goal of scoring for a national team.

Clinics With the transition period over and the 'new level structure' now firmly in place, it is pleasing to note the increase in successful candidates that have come through in the past 12 months. The trick is to now keep them interested.

Thank you to the District Associations for generating the interest in scoring.

Staffing for Events/Championships Patriots Tournament Chief Statistician: Matt Denkel Scorers: Joy Leach, Kirsty Andrews, Debbie Clarke and Chris Griffiths

Quality Assessment All scorers who officiate at any national event have their work checked by the National Scoring Panel. To ensure that all scorers are working along the same lines we have introduced a compulsory 'warm up' scoring session prior to an event for any scorer appointed to officiate at the event.

PDA's We are making headway with the number of people who are now more confident to score games

A basic clinic was held where people were trained in the use of PDA’s and The Gilley’s Shield provided an opportunity for practical training.

Questions are now being raised with regard to the Scorekeeper v Scorepad compatibility with the National statistics package and the accuracy of the scorekeeper play by plays in comparison with Scorepad.

Technology is changing all the time and with the iPhone now having a program that can be purchased for around $13.00 it is changing our concepts of scoring. The only problem with the iPhone is that they are a communications device and as such are not permitted in the dugouts.

Play by Plays being posted on the web caused some issues at the Gilley's Shield as we checked our games prior to being uploaded, rather than post them and then have to do an edit for any errors that may have occurred.

Newsletters / Website: Val Cross has once again edited our newsletter and we thank her for persisting with this onerous task. This publication is distributed via e-mail and is sent as far away as Victoria, Western Australia and overseas to Papua New Guinea.

Val has also maintained the web site and has a new challenge facing her with the change over to the new website provider.

Logbook: After a slow start the logbook is now being used on a regular basis by scorers attending championships and also within their own District Associations.

Female Tournaments Male Tournaments

U16 Val Cross Bruce Challenor

U19 Elaine Rosenberg Joy Leach

Open Bruce Challenor Val Cross

U15 Joy Leach Fiona Goffer

We have received some communication from the National Panel that they are introducing a logbook in the not too distant future.

Victoria sought our permission to copy the Queensland prototype to publish one of their own. Currently we have a give and take relationship with Victoria in relation to scoring resources.

NOAS accreditation: As with last year there are still quite a number of scorers in the Associations who have completed NOAS forms and are still waiting for recognition of their current level.

The Accreditation Cards have started to be distributed in Queensland and this will hopefully generate more interest from our established scorers applying for reaccreditation.

Scorebook: Our popular scorebook has undergone a slight revamp with lines added in the batter column to allow for neater recording of plays and some minor adjustments to the symbols have also been undertaken.

The updated version with space for 3 players in the one batting position has been well received.

DATABASE: Ongoing battle for Joy Leach - transient members, registration forms not being filled in correctly etc are still causing difficulty in maintaining an accurate record of current scorers. Apathy on the part of some also plays a large role.

COURSE REQUEST FORM: Updated form distributed to District Associations

RESOURCES: Still a few issues with material being supplied for lectures but this is being addressed with the National Panel.

Technical Issues: A first scoring specific Technical Bulletin has been issued.

We had a number of concerns raised at State Championships and local District Associations that we sought clarification from the National Panel about and it was pleasing to see them addressed in the technical bulletin.

Priorities:

Recruitment of scorers - making headway with the increased number of clinics

Accreditation Cards - ensuring that cards are received in a timely manner

Database - Accessing information to ensure that all accredited scorers are updated on our records

Newsletter The Committee submits articles relating to umpiring in Queensland to the National umpire publication, “Blues News On-Line (BNOL)”. This publication has a wide audience base and is available by email, although it can also be sourced through the resource gallery on the umpiring website.

Development Programs/Clinics Basic Clinics A number of District Associations conducted internal clinics. Few requests were received to conduct Basic clinics. This area received attention during the 2008 forum.

Relationship with Education Queensland The positive relationship between QSA and School Sports continues to be reinforced through the structured umpiring pathway that was developed last year.

QSA’s Umpiring Directorate has provided management crews to State Finals of School competition and has again conducted assessment of candidates at School competitions.

2009 Combined Technical Directorate Forum The annual umpire’s forum was held on July 25 – 27, 2009 as part of the Combined Technical Directorate Forum.

During the forum all softball Directorates, Umpiring, Coaching and Scoring, were able to attend a combined session that covered several topics including enforcement of the pitching rules and review of recent rule changes and interpretations.

The Forum also provided the first opportunity to announce the 2009 Umpiring Award winners to their peers. The recipients were: Patricia Bichel Senior Umpire of the Year – Darren Sibraa; QSA Junior Umpire of the Year – Emma Thomas. The QSA District Association Development Award was not awarded. A range of topics were covered throughout the forum, including District Association Coordinator responsibilities, communication, umpire accreditation and development, exam analysis, state championship responsibilities and presentation of District Association reports. All delegates were reminded of the requirement to share the forum material with their respective District Associations.

During the weekend, participants were involved in workshops specifically to address the new umpire feedback model and to develop association-based training programs.

I also consider it an honour to have been the joint recipient of the Viv Triplett Australian Umpire of the Year award for the second time, and to receive my Level 7 accreditation, during the 2009 Softball Australia Awards of Excellence ceremony.

In Conclusion I would like to congratulate all those District Associations that have implemented training programs and conducted clinics within their own Association. Our season never ends. There are always games requiring umpires and District Associations requiring help. The Queensland Umpiring Committee continues to work extremely hard. I thank them for their continued support.

Australia were crowned World Champions of men’s fastpitch softball after beating New Zealand 5-0 in the gold medal game of the 12th ISF Men’s World Championship in Saskatoon, Canada. Congratulations to the Aussie Steelers on achieving this historic milestone in Australian Softball history.

Team: Michael Titheridge (Manager), Bob Harrow (Head Coach), Kere Johanson, Loran Algar, Barry Blanchard, Tony Mackie (Support Staff) and Helen Edwards (Statistician).

Mike Harrow (Captain), Tyron Bartorillo, Aaron Cockman, Josh Davison, Terry Downes, Adam Folkard, Michael Gibson, Jeff Goolagong, Adam Humble, Nathan Jones, Andrew Kirkpatrick, David Meteklingi, Nick Norton, Nick Shailes and Michael Tanner.

Queensland Members of the Aussie Steelers Four time World Championship player, Terry Downes is arguably one of the most well known and respected softballers in Queensland. Terry started his softball days as a junior with Panthers Club before changing to his present club Scorpions and has represented Redlands Association his entire softball career. He has represented Queensland for almost 20 years beginning with 3 years at the Under 19’s before the introduction of the Under 16 National Championship. His career in men’s softball is unsurpassed.

Terry represented Queensland Patriots in 15 National Championships and was Captain for 5 of these. He was in both Queensland teams which won the John Reid Shield in 1995 and 2002. Terry won the 1995 Best Pitcher, 1998 Best Batter and the 2002 Most Valuable Player Awards at the Men’s National Championships.

AUSSIE STEELERS - WORLD CHAMPIONS Terry made his Australian team debut in the 1995 New Zealand Provincial Championship. His Australian Player Number is 39. He has played in 4 World Championships 1996, 2000, 2004 (bronze medal) and 2009, ending his international career with the magical gold medal and 109 games played for his country.

Terry was named the 2002 Australian Male Softballer of the Year by Softball Australia, he played in the ISC World Championships and was named in the 1996 All World Team. His positions are pitcher and outfield.

Terry announced his retirement from representative softball and chose to finish his career at the 2009 Men’s State Championship, representing his association Redlands.

Three time World Championship player Josh Davison has a unique comeback story, which finished with a fairytale Gold Medal win at the 2009 Men's World Championship. Originally from NSW, JOsh moved north of the border to Queensland and after being out of the game for about 7 years Josh decided to come back and play for Brisbane at the 2008 Men's State Championship. He was then selected in the 2009 Patriots team and went on to play in the 2009 National Championship. His outstanding performance caught the selectors’ eye and as a result earned himself the chance to put on the green and gold again and compete in his 3rd Open World Championship campaign. Josh also played for Australia in an Under 19 Men’s World Championship.

At the Softball Australia Awards of Excellence dinner, Josh’s unique story continued when he was inducted into the Softball Australia Hall of Fame. To be eligible for nomination for the Hall of Fame a player must be retired from Open International competition for four years; have competed in Open International competition for a minimum period of six years, including two World Championships. The decision to induct Josh into the Hall of Fame was made before his selection in the 2009 Aussie Steelers team.

Josh’s Australian Player Number is 31 and he has played 74 games for Australia from 1995 to 2009.

SOFTBAL L QLD MASTERS TOURNAM ENT 10 years running and still getting

bigger and better!!!

August 2009 saw the Softball Queensland Masters Tournament being held for it’s 10th year!

Amongst the competition, partying and exciting times over the weekend, I’m sure many great memories and friendly rivalries were made. The SQ Masters Tournament continues to grow each year and this year was no exception, bringing us to a record 82 teams. Over 1100 participants played in the three-day tournament.

The tournament function was again held at Meakin Park and included a celebration of the ten years of the tournament, including photo slideshow and the presentation of Ball and Chain “Lifer” awards to the following women who have been involved in Masters since its initial year in 2000;

Sandy Bassett – Bets Vets

Beth Delbridge – Steelers

Fiona Fagg – Dodgers

Evelyn Kent – Redcliffe

Heather McLaughlin – Bets Vets

Doreen Murray – Bets Vets

Brenda O’Brien – F Troop

Susan O’Connor – Noosa

Teams came from all over Queensland to participate, hailing from Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Redlands, Logan, Toowoomba, Ipswich and the Gold Coast. Teams were also from across the border in NSW; Coffs Harbour and Sydney, just to name a few. All descended on Meakin Park to take part in the tournament.

A big thank you must go to all players and officials for making the 10th Annual Softball Queensland Masters Tournament the enormous success it was. Without you, we wouldn’t have a tournament! Lifers with their ball and chains!

Betty Paxton – Bets Vets

Julie Peters – D’ruff Diamonds

Michelle Selwood – Dodgers

Beth Tahere – Phantoms

OUR F INANCIAL REPORT It is with pleasure that I present the financial report for 2009/2010. I commend the efforts of Joan Jackson (SQ Finance Manager) and extend my thanks to Joan, Sue Nisbet (SQ General Manager) and the remainder of the SQ staff for their commitment to ensuring the financial operations of the Association are well managed. Participation numbers have increased slightly once again. This is due to the variety of programs and competitions being delivered by Softball Queensland and the member District Associations. Retaining volunteers continues to be a challenge and this area needs to become a focus of future planning. The continued growth of the Softball Queensland Masters Tournament and the OzPitch competitions being conducted throughout South East Queensland shows that the social aspect of our game is a huge growth pathway. Investment in special initiative programs initiated over the past few years are showing rewards. Without the continued support of Queensland Government and our valued sponsors, Softball Queensland would not be able to continue delivering the services, programs and initiatives that are currently being offered. The Audited Financial Statement indicates a small surplus for 2009/10 Financial Year. The Board continues to be diligent in reviewing the financial reports, carefully watching the expenditure and ensuring that very stringent processes are followed. The Queensland Academy of Sport is acknowledged for its contribution to Softball Queensland through the provision of financial support. This has allowed Softball Queensland to develop and expand the High Performance Program and maintain the high quality program of previous years. Softball Australia financially contributed to the participation of Queensland Heat in the expanded Gilley’s Shield competition.

Insurance premiums have stabilised over the past two years. Continued attention to risk management will ensure that premiums remain stable. It is reassuring that the member District Associations are aware of their commitments and financial obligations. It is acknowledged that this has a significant impact on the financial stability of the Association. Budgets for 2010/2011 for SQ have been finalised and approved by the Board with a small surplus being projected. At the time of writing, there is some uncertainty over the amount of funding to be received from the Queensland Government, Queensland Academy of Sport and Softball Australia. This is due to the change over of funding periods and programs as a result of the recent State and Federal budgets and funding program reviews. In addition, Softball Australia has introduced a new Pricing Policy which will see an increase in products and services, the exact extent of which is currently unknown. Our concerns are continually being voiced to Softball Australia as the Board strives to ensure the financial future of the Association. District Associations are strongly encouraged to access the support of Softball Queensland in the marketing and delivery of softball and to take up the various growth program initiatives to help secure long term participation in our sport. I submit the Balance Sheet and Financial Statement to the members for acceptance. Stephen Wagner Chairperson
