Students will be able to explain why the English became the dominant country in regards to colonizing the Americas.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
Why were the English able to colonize America?
SPLIT FROM THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
Roman Catholic Church was the only type of church in Western Europe before 1500.Protestant Reformation begins in 1517.
Begins with Martin Luther attaching his “99 Thesis”.

It is marked with killing, torturing and exiling.

Henry VIII decides that England will divorce from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534. Henry VIII wanted a divorce
from his wife. She was unable to give him a
heir (son). Split from Rome and the Pope. Declared himself Head of the
Church of England. The divorce created a rift
between two great nations. Spain (Catholic) vs. England
(Protestant).
SPLIT FROM THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
The death of Henry VIII and his son made way for Elizabeth to become Queen in 1588. King Philip II wanted
to marry Elizabeth. He saw this as an
opportunity to make peace and return England back to the Roman Catholic Church.
She declined.
ENGLAND vs. SPAIN
Elizabeth had her Sea Dogs (Pirates) led by Francis Drake. Elizabeth order them to steal gold from the Spanish ships
returning from America. He sent a message to Queen Elizabeth that he wanted Francis
head on the platter. Instead she rewarded him.
Crowned him a knight, the highest honor outside of nobility.
ENGLAND vs. SPAIN
Phillip reacts with rage. 1588 Phillip sends his “Spanish Armada” to
attack England. It consisted of 130 ships, the largest navy ever
assembled. A violent storm destroys some of the fleet before
the battle.
ENGLAND vs. SPAIN
English Sea Dogs defeated the Spanish Armada. This battle will effect the world.
Spain loses its stronghold on America. England becomes a powerful force and rules
the seas.
