A note from the HeadteacherWelcome to our end of term Newsletter. We are almost at the end of the Spring term and this half term has passed very quickly! All pupils and staff have been working very hard this term as usual and enjoying their activities in and out of school, including World Autism Awareness Week.

Thank you to all parents who recently attended annual reviews and for the helpful and positive engagement with the school.

Congratulations to Elm Class pupils on the completion of their AQA certificates for Maths, English and PSHE. Another big thank you to Kairi Reiter, our Lead for Teaching and Learning who is supporting and coordinating this award scheme, along with the ASDAN programme across the school, as well as Elm Class staff for helping the pupils with these achievements.

In more news, Ryan and Elyon from Maple Class will be moving to Olive Class next term and we are sure they will settle in quickly after their transition visits this term.

I would like to welcome our new pupil, Yoidi Michael, who started at Kestrel House recently and has settled in very well to Oak Class.

Please remember that school finishes at 2pm on 31st March 2017. We look forward to seeing all our pupils back on Wednesday 19th April 2017.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for their continued support with our various fundraising events and I hope that you and your families have a peaceful and enjoyable Easter break.

World Autism Awareness WeekTo mark World Autism Awareness Week, Kestrel House School held a balloon release. Attached to each balloon was a message about autism, so that whoever finds the balloon will learn about the condition to spread awareness. In 2015 one of the balloons reached Sompuis in France! We wonder how far they’ll travel this time! We also had an amazing cake made by local bakery Egg Free Cake Box which was delicious!

Staff Training by the MDTIn February, the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) provided training for all staff on the most commonly used interventions for working with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and how to implement them in a school context. After a quick overview of the main theoretical approaches to learning - behaviourist and interactionist - each member of the MDT presented the interventions they draw upon when working with our pupils at Kestrel House School (Intensive Interaction, Floortime, TEACCH, PECS, Makaton, Social Stories, Sensory Integration and Music-Centred Music Therapy).

    Therapy news

Later this term, Anne, our Assistant Psychologist, gave another training session for all staff on the range of ways that having a child with ASD can impact on family life and how members of staff can take these joys and frustrations into account when communicating with our pupils’ parents and carers.

Anne has also scheduled a third training session for all members of staff on “Empathy and Emotions in children with ASD” for the beginning of the Summer Term. In April, Chelsea and Anne will also provide outreach introductory training for professionals who work with children with ASD within the Enfield learning community.

Oak ClassThis term we have been reading the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We enjoyed feeding the caterpillar treats in our sensory story on World Book Day. We have been learning about 3D shapes in Maths and made a paper maché caterpillar using spheres, a chocolate cake cube, a watermelon pyramid and an ice cream cone.

We have been thinking about healthy eating and made a lovely vegetable soup which we shared with our friends in Elm Class. We practiced using knives safely to chop the vegetables.

We celebrated Holi festival recently. We enjoyed throwing coloured cornflour around and making ourselves very bright and colourful!

Elm class students have been working hard this half term during Maths.

They choose a number then they will pick up objects that are in the class and match them to the number they have chosen.

Both Fernando and Arafat have been looking at lines of symmetry and using a mirror to help them draw the reflecting shape on the other side.

Alex is using Numicon, he is matching the numicon

to the numbers pointed out by the teacher.

We also have a new hairdryer which we have been using to melt different substances such as ice, butter, and cheese. Everyone had fun using the hairdryer and watching the substances melt. The most fun to watch melt was the wax crayons as the colours mixed together as they melted.

    Dear Parents,

I will be going on maternity leave at the beginning of May. Roz will be employing another Speech and Language Therapist to cover my leave and there will be a period of handover so that he/she can become familiar with the children and we can discuss them individually.

I will be providing class teachers with a story to prepare the children for my absence.
