The two-year toddler made headlines around the world in 1993 when he was abducted, tortured and mur- dered by two 10-year-old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables. There were harrowing CCTV images of the toddler being led away by the boys from the New Strand Shop- ping Centre in Bootle near Liverpool to his death; his body was found on railway tracks a short dis- tance away. Last night in Britain Venables, now aged in his 30s, was released from jail on parole. The child killer was first controversially released from a life sentence in 2001 and given a new identity. But he was sent back to jail three years ago from an ad- dress in the UK after it was discovered he was accessing depraved images of chil- dren, including toddlers, being raped. James Bulger’s parents, Denise Fergus and Ralph Bulger, begged prison auth- orities to keep Venables be- hind bars but he was freed and given another identity. The military published the statement on its spokesman’s Facebook page as scores were injured in clashes between the Islamist Mr Morsi’s sup- porters and opponents in the Nile Delta. In the restive Sinai penin- sula, a soldier was killed in an attack by Islamist mili- tants early yesterday, as gun- men ambushed several army and police positions with machinegun fire and rockets, and attacked an airport. The soldier was killed when the militants fired on an army checkpoint near the north Sinai village of al-Gura, medics said, adding two other soldiers were wounded. Militants fired rockets at a police base and attacked mil- itary intelligence head- quarters in the border town of Rafa, security sources said. The official MENA news agency said military Apache helicopters dispatched to pur- sue gunmen who attacked an airport in northern Sinai struck a militants’ vehicle. Some militants in the pen- insula had threatened a viol- ent response after Mr Morsi’s ouster on Wednesday. The military statement said it supported the right to peaceful protest, but warned that violence and civil dis- obedience would ‘‘harm social peace’’. Clashes in the Nile Delta province of Sharqiya broke out hours after chief justice Adly Mansour, 67, was sworn in as interim president until new elections, at a ceremony broadcast live from the Su- preme Constitutional Court. The Islamists accused the military of conducting a brazen coup against Mr Mor- si, Egypt’s first democratic- ally elected, but contro- versial, president, following massive protests calling for him to go. Mr Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood movement cal- led for peaceful protests against the ‘‘coup’’, as police continued to hunt its leaders. Police arrested the Bro- therhood’s supreme leader Mohammed Badie ‘‘for incit- ing the killing of protesters’’. Former supreme guide Ma- hdi Akef was also arrested, state television reported. Mr Morsi was ‘‘preventive- ly detained’’ by the military, a senior officer said. In Cairo, anger gave way to gloom as thousands of the Is- lamist movement’s sup- porters rallied at a mosque.
