The King Alexander Bridge*
Historic background
The King Alexander Bridge was a vehicle bridge on the river Sava, and was destroyed during the World War II. After
the war, on the place of the the old bridge, the new Brankov bridge was constructed. The construction started on
the July of 1930, and the bridge was completed in December of 1934.The Bridge was 474m long.
The bridge was supported by two reinforced concrete pillars in the Serbian- Byzantine style, while steel ropes held
the entire structure. The opening was spectacular.
The bridge was opened by the Prince Regent, Pavle Karadjordjevic , and on the opening day around 150,000 citizens
walked over the bridge. It was in many ways an historical day for Belgrade, Zemun, and Serbia.
owards the end of the construction of the bridge, King Alexander increasingly begun to think about the statues that
were supposed to be placed on the pylons of the bridge.Sculptor Ivan Mestrovic had the idea of four riders, two on
one pylon on both sides of the bridge. These horsemen were to be emperor Dušan and kings Tomislav,Tvrtko and
Peter I Karadjordjevic
The solution was dropped under pressure from various engineersand sculptors.
The construction of the King Alexander bridge was done by several companies and architects.Author of the pillars
of the bridge was the Russian architect Nikola Krasnov who designed many more famous buildings in Belgrade. The
German architect Milu initially did not like the Roman-Byzantine style of the pylons, on top of which his company “
Gutenhoffnungshiitte “ performed aniron construction of road crossings.
On the night between 11th and 12th April 1941 in the so-called April war, the bridge was blown up by the Royal
Yugoslav Army, in order to prevent Germans soldiers to enter Belgrade.
On the pillars of the old bridge, a new one was built in 1956, in the co-production ofYugoslav and the MAN Company
from the Federal Republic of Germany.
After the war the first trolleybus went from the old Belgrade to Zemun- until the year 1973.
In the fifties the city grew fast and the number of vehicles increased so the capacity of the bridge was insufficient. It
was necessary to add a new driveway. The bridge took its final form in 1979. when a new driveway was added to the
existing construction. The second half of the bridge is independent of the one that preceded it, and the impression
is created that there is one bridge, but in fact it consists of two structures.
Every day about 90.000 vehicles cross the bridge. Half of Belgrade’s every day cross Branko Bridge from the old city
to the new Belgrade. Everybody knows it as “Brankov “, associated to the name of the street that continues to the
city centre.

GROUP I Project: NEW SAVAMALA LANDSCAPE Students: Andrea Cazzarolli (Italian, Politecnico di Milano), Cai Jianming (Chinese, Politecnico di Milano), Isidora Todorović (Serbian, Faculty of Architecture, Belgrade University), Jan Szonert (Polish, KEA Kopenhagen), Marinela Marković (Serbian, Faculty of Arts and Design, University John Naisbitt), Miloš Pešić (Serbian, Faculty of Arts and Design, University John Naisbitt), Tan Li. (Chinese, Politecnico di Milano), Mentor: Prof dr Jelena Ivanović-Vojvodić Assistant: Natalija Jovanović The project New Savamala Landscape as a solution offers space with defined boundaries and amenities. It starts from an new landscape element - the hill below which the road passes, which also serves as an amphitheater. The cultural facilities are planed- Spanish house will become a digital art gallery, and the pylon will be a small exhibition space, which invites visitors to sit in the amphitheater and watch a movie or play. In addition to this there is the climbing wall, facilities for recreation with space for play, as well as a small cafe located upstairs. The project also treats the issue of ecological sustainability, the lighting is LED, with motion sensors, and rainwater is used for irrigation.
Projekat: NEW SAVAMALA LANDSCAPE Studenti: Andrea Cazzarolli (Italija, Politecnico di Milano), Cai Jianming (Kina, Politecnico di Milano), Isidora Todorović (Srbija, Arhitektonski fakultet Univerziteta u Beogradu), Jan Szonert (Poljska, KEA Kopenhagen), Marinela Marković (Srbija, Fakultet za umetnost i dizajn, Univerzitet John Naisbitt), Miloš Pešić (Srbija, Fakultet za umetnost i dizajn, Univerzitet John Naisbitt), Tan Li (Kina, Politecnico di Milano), Mentor: Prof dr Jelena Ivanović-Vojvodić Asistent: Natalija Jovanović Projekat pod nazivom New Savamala Landscape kao rešenje nudi prostor sa definisanim granicama i sadržajima.

Students treated the space as a kind of "house" with a roof (Branko's bridge) and walls (pilon and grand staircase of the bridge). In their solutions they sought to construct conceptual walls of a"house" that are missing, offering new programs that would attract visitors, passers and revive this forgotten and underutilized urban area.

Ignacy Radtke (KEA Kop.)
Marko Petrović (Arh. Bgd)
Ciaran O’Toole (KEA Kop.)
Mentor: Prof James Harty, PhD
Asistent: Nataša Čolić, PhD
Predloženo idejno rešenje ’’Water under the bridge’’ zasniva se na dva vodeća koncepta koja
podrazumevaju očuvanje kulturnog i spomeničkog nasledja Beograda, kao i podizanju ekološke
svesti gradjana. U cilju očuvanja i revitalizacije postojećeg kulturnog nasledja na lokaciji, tj.
Pilona Brankovog mosta i spomenika Nesvrstanima, idejno rešenje predlaze uvodjenje
vodopada, vodenih površina, popločanja, kao i zelenog pojasa izmedju spomenika i postojeće
gradjene sredine.
The two main concepts behind the sugested spatial intervention of the project ‘Water under
the Bridge’ relate to the need to protect and revitalize the existing cultural heritage of
Belgrade, as well as to raise ecological awareness of citizens. Hence, the project proposes
introduction of clear water in a form of waterfalls, special paving, water surfaces and green belt
into the existing landscape. These spatial interventions aim to highlight the significance of
preserving cultural heritage of Belgrade, as well as to visually and spatially enhance the
importance of Pilon of Branko’s Bridge and the Monument of Non-Aligned. Moreover, they aim
to affect the raise of ecological awareness within consumers of this space, if taken that the
location is characterized as one of the most congested areas of Belgrade.

pozornicom i interaktivnom scenom.
interakcija izmedju razlicitih aktera u prostoru.
The proposed spatial intervention ’Le fil rouge’ aims to activate the space under the Branko’s
Bridge and by creating social interaction based on the open theatre concept. ’Red carpet’
paving is a pedestrian zone which connects waterfront with the space under the bridge. This
walk ends with the open theatre and an interactive scene. This project is based on joint idea to
revitalize the concept of ’mahalla’ or, vibrant residential settlement. This is different from the
current land-use of the space as one of the main traffic knots of Belgrade. Therefore, ’Le fil
rouge’ aims to inspire pedestrians, cyclists, indogeneus people as well as tourists to stay in this
space which creates interaction between the variety of actors.
