2009 Opportunity Quilt Sue Contreras

The QBS Board met on Thursday, June 18 and among the decisions voted and approved was the marketing of the 2009 Opportunity Quilt called The Underground Railroad, pieced and quilted by member Sandy Szladek. Your scribe is in charge of getting tickets printed asap. Ann Leibovitz has graciously volunteered to help me stuff and label the envelopes to be ready for the next general meeting. Then the fun begins as all QBS members work hard to maximize their time and contacts, selling tickets to neighbors, friends, co-workers and family; who during the year encourage us to buy wrapping paper and candy to support their kid’s

fundraisers! QBS will also need volunteers to work other guild meetings and shows to sell tickets and ensure the fiscal health of QBS for 2009. Can we count on YOU? MORE 2010 Opportunity News You Can Use Well, what can I say? Better than any reality show. . . if you were not at the general meeting on June 11, then you missed one of the most exciting, thrilling and controversial meetings of the year. There was a lot of discussion, tension and passionate feelings shared regarding the 2010 Opportunity Quilt. A motion on the floor to rescind the choice of the Baltimore Quilt as our 2010 Opportunity Quilt, was seconded and passed. Kasey Egelus presented four other choices to be considered as the 2010 QBS Opportunity Quilt. At this time I am sharing we will have another election to choose our 2010 Quilt Design at the July general meeting. The Baltimore Opportunity quilt will be presented at the July meeting along with enlarged photos of the four other designs in contention. This is the definitive opportunity to vote your hearts desire. Please mark your calendars and make a concerted effort to attend the July 11 meeting and help choose the design/quilt to represent QBS in the 2010 local quilting community. In addition, Kasey and company will be counting on your support to volunteer to help make 2010 successful. The 2010 Opportunity Quilt Committee meets on Mondays, 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the Cerritos Senior Center at Patricia Nixon Park, 12340 South Street, in Cerritos.

2010 Opportunity Quilt Kasey Egelus

Have a look at the five quilts that are up for selection as the 2010 Opportunity quilt. Look the pictures over here or on our website - http://www.quiltersbythesea.com/opportunityquilt2.html. This website link takes you directly to the quilts. You will not be able to find them from our homepage. At the July General Meeting you

may vote for the quilt you would like to see as our 2010 Opportunity Quilt. We will have two of the quilts at the meeting for you to get up-close and personal with. The 2010 Opportunity Quilt committee meets every Monday at the Cerritos Senior Center

at Pat Nixon Park between 6 pm and 8:30 pm. The address is 12340 South Street, Cerritos, CA. If you have any questions you can contact Kasey Egelus at 323-586-6464 / 562-404-3976 or Carol Jurado at 562-809-509

What’s the Scoop with Intraguild Kayleen Leone

The Intraguild Committee is responsible for some of our internal activities to promote camaraderie among our members. These activities currently include raffles at the general meetings, secret pal gift exchange, offering items for sale, block of the month, fabric exchanges, show and tell where members proudly display their handy-work, and quilting gatherings and retreats. Most of these activities take place at the monthly general meetings and money raised from these events is income for the Guild. The raffle alone has raised over $900 so far this year.

We have 48 members participating in the Kaleidoscope of Kolor block of the month. This BOM quilt pattern is available for a cost of only $15 for the whole year. It will be great fun to see all the quilts made by our members at a future Show and Tell. We have 15 members exchanging gifts through the Secret Pal program. This is a great way to get to know someone in the Guild that you might otherwise never meet. At the December meeting we will reveal everyone’s secret pal and begin sign-ups for next year. Our Sew So Late program offers a time for you to gather with fellow quilters at a local quilt shop to sew on anything you want – or just come to chat with friends. And don’t forget to bring your quilts to the general meeting to let us see your creations during Show and Tell each month. Don’t be shy - no matter what your skill level - everyone deserves accolades.

Community Relations Randy Miller

Mark your calendars! September is our Community Relations workshop. We will meet at the church on the second Saturday of September - September 12, at 9:00am. This is a free workshop to make quilts for community relations. We will have kits, patterns and fabric there for those who prefer to choose their own. We will have all day to make quilts, from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

We will be having our monthly workshop at the Bunney Hutch on Sunday, July 12. We will be making kits and preparing for the September workshop.

I again want to thank everyone for coming to our workshops and for donating quilts and fabric to the guild. Without the donated fabric, we would have nothing to use to make our kits. Remember, if you only want to make “tops”, we have members who will quilt them and we also have members who love to do bindings.

PROGRAMS Susan Contreras

Debbie Karasik is half of a dynamic duo known as the Quilt Mavens. The other is Janet Mednick. They met in 2001, at a San Francisco Quilter's Guild 'Quiltaway', and became fast friends.

Almost immediately, they discovered VERY different quilting styles. Janet, the experienced, award winning, and published quilter, loved to take traditional patterns and designs and give them new life with fabrics and colors. Deb, aka the 'Spike Queen', adored paper piecing and designing spiky quilts using bold, bright colors.

Putting differences aside, they started collaborating on quilts. It was amazing to both of them how much they found they could learn from each other. As their journey continues, they hope to keep the learning process and overall fun of sewing together evident in the quality of all of their quilts.

We are very lucky to snag one of this team to come and speak at QBS. Thursday, July 9th promises to be a memorable evening.

President’s Corner Sonia Das

A very short message this time because I missed the June general and board meetings as my father and I were on a 2 week Alaskan cruise. It was one of the best holidays of my life! The scenery was majestic and awe-inspiring: snow-capped mountains, forests, fjords, glaciers and waterfalls everywhere you looked. We also saw plenty of wildlife: 3 bears (in different locations), eagles, salmon, seals, otters, reindeer, and whales! In between all of the excursions and travelling, I visited several quilt shops and yarn shops. It was lovely to see all of the displayed quilts featuring Alaskan themes and fabric. This cruise was a wonderful opportunity to restore and refresh one’s soul and spirit. Now I’m ready to enjoy the rest of the quilting year. July will be a busy month for QBS members. We have the Southern California Quilters Run held over the first two weeks of the month. Please go and have a great time while supporting your local quilt shops. Near the end of July will be the International Quilt Festival at the Long Beach Convention Center. Local quilt shops will have advance tickets for sale. Another event for all of us to celebrate and enjoy. Since QBS will be displaying its Opportunity Quilt at the Festival, we will need volunteers to sell tickets and to donate 20 hours of volunteer time at the show. These hours are required of each guild that is displaying an Opportunity Quilt. Sign-up sheets and more information will be sent out via email and at the July meeting. On the broken record note (once again): We DESPERATELY NEED A PARLIAMENTARIAN to head the nominating committee and find a slate of officers for next year. Without a Parliamentarian, either the Present Board is forced to continue or the guild grinds to a halt so QBS really needs a volunteer or volunteers in this position. Looking forward to seeing all of you in July. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 562-429-4477 or email me at [email protected].
