    Mansinh M. Rana belonged to the frst generation o modern architects o India.He is also known as the architect o Nehru. He did his bachelors in architecture

    rom J.J. School o Architecture Mumbai and later trained under Frank lo!d

    "right. He came back to India and #oined the $entral %ublic "orks de&artment as

    their $hie architect. Among his better known buildings are 'al 'hawan( Nehru

    Memorial ibrar! and Nehru %lanetarium. He has also designed )ardens such as

    Shanti *ana the Samadhi o Jawaharlal Nehru and 'uddha Ja!anti

    $ommemoration %ark. In his buildings the in+uence o Frank lo!d "right,s

    %rinci&les are clearl! -isible. Frank lo!d "right belie-ed in harmon! with nature

    and organic architecture. M.M Rana,s buildings seem to be at one with their

    landsca&e. He also uses a lot o natural materials like stone and wood which is-isible in "right,s buildings as well. M.M Rana -er! ins&ired b! Nehru,s sense o

    rationalit! that comes across in his design or the Nehru Memorial ibrar! and

    &lanetarium. es&ite being sim&le geometrical sha&es &ut together the! &ro-ide

    earth!( well lit s&aces to &erorm the re/uisite unctions.

    M.M Rana like the man! others o his generation sought to fnd a modernit!

    uni/ue to India. His buildings though in e-er! as&ect modern !et ha-e a

    sensiti-it! to Indian Sensibilit! and not onl! that but their surroundings.

    0hus e-en though the! were constructed more than 12 !ears ago the! are still

    -er! much unctional and interesting to use.

    3.0. Ra-indran is the head o 4rban esign at School o %lanning and

    Architecture( New elhi. He is the ounder %resident o the Institute o 4rban

    esigners5 India( a &roessional association o /ualifed urban designers. He is

    member o the academic boards o number o uni-ersities in India. He has been

    a regular contributor to books( &roessional maga6ines and news&a&ers on

    sub#ects relating to urban design( &lanning( architecture and urban conser-ation.

    . His &ractice includes design o greenfeld cities( cultural buildings and

    memorials( as well as 4rban $onser-ation.

    He com&leted his bachelors rom A$ $ollege o 0echnolog! in $hennai and &ost5

    graduation in 4rban esign. He then took u& an o7er to work in 0eheran where

    he worked in urban conser-ation and design in the old cities o e6ul and

    Andimeshk.

    He got the o&&ortunit! to showcase his talent when he won a com&etition run b!

    the $entral )o-ernment to build a memorial or ormer %rime Minister Ra#i-

    )andhi at Sri %erumbudur near $hennai.

    He also designed the kitchen museum located in the basement o the

    Rashtra&ati 'ha-an( which was being used as a dum& s&ace. His other notable&ro#ects include the $hinma!a Mission $entre at odhi Road( New elhi8 the

    National School o drama8 Swami *i-ekananda 3endra8 restoration o the Jal

    Mahal( Jai&ur.

    include contem&orar! urban histor!( indigenous urbanism( -ernacular building

    traditions and sustainabilit! and urban orm.
