THE DESIGN ALSO INCLUDES A BOOKSTORE, CAFE, THEATER, AND AN UNDERGROUND PARKING STRUCTURE. THE CONCEPT FOR THE DESIGN IS CENTERED AROUND NOTIONS OF COMMUNITY. THE DIFFERENT SPACES WITHIN ARE OF DIFFERENT SHAPES AND SIZES IN ORDER TO PROMOTE THEIR INDIVIDUALITY WHILE THE GLASS ENCLOSURE PROVIDES THE ENTIRETY WITH A FEELING OF COHESIVENESS. THE SPIDER FITTED BUTT GLAZED CURTAIN WALL WAS CHOSEN TO EMPHASIZE THE PUBLIC NATURE OF THE BUILDING AND PROMOTE ITS ACCESSIBILITY TO ALL.

THE CONCEPT IS BASED UPON AUDITORY MOVEMENT AND ELE-MENTS OF NATURE.

THE HALL IS SITUATED JUST TO THE SOUTH OF CHICAGO’S NAVY PIER AND CAN BE SEEN FROM LAKESHORE DRIVE. BY COM-PLETING DANIEL BURNHAM’S PLAN, A NEW SECTION OF LAND WOULD BE BUILT UP TO MIRROR THE SITE UPON WHICH SHED AQUARIUM IS LOCATED.

THE EXTERIOR ENCLOSURE WAS FORMED AROUND THE CONCEPT OF A MEGAPHONE IN THAT IT IS TO PROVIDE SHELTER AND GUIDANCE TO SOUND WAVES IN ORDER TO ALLOW THEM TO BE HEARD BY MANY.

THE FORM OF THE HALL ITSELF IS DERIVED FROM THE FORM OF A BLOOMING FLOWER IN THAT IT IS REPRESENTATIVE OF PURITY AND ELEGANCE.

JURY ROOM STOOLTHE STOOL HAD TO MADE OF ONLY 1/2” PLYWOOD AND MUST BE EASILY TRANSPORTABLE. THROUGH LAYERING MANY PIECES TOGETHER THE STOOLS’ BEAUTY IS AN EXPRESSION OF THE MEDIUMS’ STRENGTH.

THE FORM IS SHAPED SO THE STOOL CAN BE UTILIZED IN A VARIETY OF POSITIONS.

THE PAVILION SITS ON THE LEVEE JUST SOUTH OF THE CONVERGENCE OF THE KANSAS AND MISSOURI RIVERS. THE FORM WAS DEVELOPED FROM THE WINDY NATURE OF THE SITE AS WELL AS THE PRESENCE OF FLOWING WATER NEARBY. RECLAIMED LUMBER FROM REGIONAL BARNS WAS USED TO PAY HOMAGE TO THE HISTORY OF THE SITE, AS IT WAS ONCE HOME TO THE KANSAS CITY STOCKYARDS.

Located to the southwest of the Science Building, the building incorporates and enhances the existing Galileo Sculpture, and amplifies the artist’s concept of integrating science and nature. The design of the site plays a pivotal role in the pedestrian traffic patterns on the south end of campus. The building is arranged on the site around a courtyard, blending indoors and outdoors with a visual connection between the spaces. The interior spaces function as classrooms, student lounge/coffee bar, and exhibition/ display space.

3D SECTION - CONCEPTUAL

The new building is not simply one among many, but an icon that leads the rest of the campus by example. Several design decisions have been made which signify our unique role in informing the public of JCCC’s connection to nature. The facade of the pavilion is clad in slate panels made from reclaimed chalkboards. This inherent contrast to the surrounding buildings is key in not only setting apart this individual building, but more importantly to stake JCCC’s own claim in the field of modern and sustainable design. Other design features include the use of passive heating and cooling systems such as thermal mass, rainwater harvesting, and green roof trays in addition to active systems such as photovoltaics and a wind turbine. These elements are incorporated in the layout of the building, the choice of materials, the assembly of the wall, and the design of the courtyard.
