• Lift trucks can be dangerous machines. If you don’t ensure your aware of the location of them at all times, they can kill and injure people. Follow this advice to help you and those you work with stay safe.

• The really good news is that accidents involving forklift trucks in the United Kingdom have decreased over time. In the year to April 2013 there were only six fatal accidents which although too many, is much lower than the 30 annual deaths that were reported annually in the 70’s.

Segregation;

One of the main ways to try to reduce the risk is by separating vehicles and people.

Redditch site has a small yard, the pedestrian walkway was identified as the safest place within the yard. This is why it is very important to stick to the pedestrian route.

This and the wearing of High Vis vests are how we ensure that you are seen by FLT drivers and Truck drivers.

Workplace Transport and you Yard Size

Due to the size of our yard we can often have 3 trucks in a small space.

NEVER walk between stationary vehicles.

ALWAYS stick to the walkwayIf you need to pass, get the drivers attention and stick as close as is safe to do, to the walkway.

Warehouse/Stores

The picture to the right is the ideal way to ensure pedestrian safety in a warehouse.

Unfortunately we have got very limited space and are not able to segregate.

We have limited the number of people who enter the Warehouse and Stores to ensure everyone’s safety.

High Vis and Safety Shoes are mandatory.

Warehouse/Stores:

There are a few things you need to do to help keep yourself and others safe.

Never;• Stand on the forks, or on a pallet, or similar, balanced on the forks; • Become a passenger, unless the lift truck is designed for this; • Walk under raised forks or loads; • Walk behind a truck without getting permission from the driver;• Stand next to a load about to be pick up.
