Now I ’ m sure you ’ re all aware that our most recent big event was the ATC Qld Awards of Excellence night. This year saw some truly fabulous entries from all over Qld.

I ’ m now looking forward to next years – more members, more entries, more fun. Caroline Bell.

Australian Tile Council Australian Tile Council Australian Tile Council Australian Tile Council Training Course Training Course Training Course Training Course InformationInformationInformationInformation For sometime now the Queensland Division of the Australian Tile Council

have been discussing the need to introduce a training course for Showroom Consultants that is directly relevant to the tile industry.

We have received quite a bit of feedback from members, and the industry in general, and it is clear that given the ever changing landscape of tile distribution, there is a real necessity for the people who are at the frontline to be more comprehensively trained than ever before.

I am pleased to report that Mike Snare and myself

have done quite a bit of ground work on putting together a training course that we expect will cover areas such as the manufacturing of ceramic tiles, selling skills, customer rights, OH&S issues, quantity estimating, Australian Standards, colour co-ordination along with a hands on component .

Initially we will be holding a course in Brisbane to cover the South East Queensland area and at a later date rolling it out to other regional areas of Queensland. While there is still quite a bit of work to be done, we are hopeful that we will have the first course up and running by March / April 2010. Obviously we will keep all Australian Tile Council members fully informed along the way. Greg Eyers

Over the years, Over the years, Over the years, Over the years, the council has also been instrumental in the following major achievements:

• Having import duty rates on tiles reduced from 30% to 4%.

• Having the proposal to introduce a 12% sales tax on tiles quashed in 1995.

• Bringing about the formation of the Ceramic Wall and Floor Tiler’s association in 1993.

• Restricting and then eliminating cost burdens associated with requirements for quarantine inspections of all tile containers in 1999.

• Organising meetings for members with relevant experts who took us through the GST implications for our industry in 2000. (These meetings were standing room only)

• Preventing residential floors being included in the slip resistance standards in 2007.

• And we continue to be on the lookout for issues that may be detrimental to our industry.

None of the above mentioned achievements simply happened. They were discussed, instigated, organized and driven by The Australian Tile Council, which are people just like you that take an interest not only in their own business but also the industry it operates in.

Tiles are not getting any lighterTiles are not getting any lighterTiles are not getting any lighterTiles are not getting any lighter Over the years we have seen the introduction of many large format tiles. Whilst aesthetically they can enhance the overall appearance of a project they also pose an injury risk for staff, customers and installers during packing, delivery and installation due to their weight and size. Most injuries are the result of frequent or prolonged periods of repeated or continuous movements. It is important all staff are trained in correct posture and lifting methods in preparation for prolonged periods of activity. To ensure your business complies with the required O.H & S laws go to www.worksafe.qld.gov.au or call 1300 369 915 for more assistance and ask for a “ S erious about Safe Business ” pack. TILING JOB SPECIFICATIONSTILING JOB SPECIFICATIONSTILING JOB SPECIFICATIONSTILING JOB SPECIFICATIONS The Tile Shop in conjunction with various builders has designed site specific recommendations and specifications in accordance with current Australian standards. AS3740-2004 ( w aterproofing of wet areas within residential buildings) and AS3958.1 -2007 ( g uide to instillation of ceramic tiles ) .

These specifications will vary slightly for each builder and site, with site specific advice sought from recent product manufactures required. The tile fixer is required by the builder to record on a pre set out sheet, every aspects of work carried out.

The following is an example of this record sheet:The following is an example of this record sheet:The following is an example of this record sheet:The following is an example of this record sheet:

The record sheet will then list other areas to be tiled, noting adhesives and grouts used and any comments on how the job went. The Tilers can also inspect water proofing membranes noting any damage and how it was repaired.

We have spoken with a number of tilers to obtain feedback and suggestions of what issues they would like to have addressed on this form. The response was overwhelmingly positive some have said and I quote “ it finally gives them a way of recording problems they have when told by the supervisors/ builder to do the job anyway ” . Then in affect once they cover defective substrate they are liable. This form could be used as evidence to protect tiler/builder and show where responsibility lays. James Smith

Upon inspection with the site supervisor the concrete surface that was to be tiled appeared to be quite powdery and quite porous. The supervisor said that the concrete when being finished had an unexpected rain storm dumped a lot of rain on the still to be troweld area. I then made a phone call to John at Davco explaining the situation and his advice was to grind the slab to remove the powder surface thoroughly. Once this is done the slab will be very porous and he suggested a primer. The supervisor organised the grinding then we cleaned and primed the slab.

Sprawl OutSprawl OutSprawl OutSprawl Out The Bligh government announced its proposal to increase the first home owner grant by $3000 for first home buyers who purchase in regional areas.

The stated goal is to limit congestion in SEQ.

Rather it looks like a recipe for real sprawl as purchasers make the choice to live toward Gympie or Warwick ( to be eligible for the incentive ) , and commute into SEQ.

It may also fuel home price rises in already land strapped regional areas. Any incentive needs to be restricted to new housing.

At least this initiative appears to have been announced with time for consultation. Brian Stewart UDIAUDIAUDIAUDIA Chief Chief Chief Chief Executive and General CounselExecutive and General CounselExecutive and General CounselExecutive and General Counsel

Bottlenecks Choking Recovery Michael Stutchbury, Economics editor; From: The Australian; November 07, 2009 12:00AM

THE return of infrastructure bottlenecks is threatening to push up inflation and interest rates, and so choke off the Reserve Bank's forecasts of a quick recovery from the global crisis. Rather than being at our export ports, however, the new bottlenecks are gripping first in our big cities in the form of rising home prices and rents, as a rapidly growing population competes for a limited supply of new housing.

"A huge chasm is opening up between the demand and supply for housing," Westpac chief economist Bill Evans yesterday told the Road to Recovery conference presented by The Australian and the Melbourne Institute. Evans said this had pushed up housing prices at an annualised rate of 20 per cent over the past six months and was one of the reasons the Reserve Bank had "decided to move as fast as they did" on starting to lift interest rates. Urban infrastructure bottlenecks in major cities, including road congestion and housing supply, are becoming the first new capacity constraint on the economy as it shrugs off the global crisis. By pushing up inflation and interest rates, these urban chokepoints have much the same supply-side economic impact as the lengthening shipping queues off the east coast coal ports during the pre-crisis resources boom.

Failures to deal with the new housing chokepoint were highlighted by a string of speakers at the Road to Recovery conference over the past two days, led by Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens and Productivity Commission chairman Gary Banks.
