It is increasingly common for psychologists to work in independent practice alongside their NHS practice as well as working full time within such roles. However, starting such a venture can be a daunting task, as well as a highly rewarding one. This four-day course aims to give the training you need to help you develop a successful practice. It will be suited to both those clinicians already in independent practice as well as those wishing to start. Socrates Psychological Services Ltd is an independent practice comprising of clinical psychologists and other allied health professionals. Additional facilitators will contribute to various course days offering their expertise to the topics covered including individuals with specialised knowledge in areas of expert witness work, clinical services, business management and contract tendering. Dr McCormick founded Socrates Psychological Services and has extensive experience in working with children and families both therapeutically and within legal proceedings, as well as running a thriving clinical practice that has grown substantially and successfully over the last ten years. Facilitators: Dr Rachel McCormick, (Managing DIrector/Clinical Psychologist) and Dr Rachel Varley (Consultant Psychologist/Lead for Adult Services). Dr Varley joined the company in 2012 and has extensive experience of working with adults therapeutically, as well as providing assessments for legal proceedings. She specialises in working with complex clients with personality difficulties as well as those affected by trauma.

What does the course consist of?

Day One Thursday 19th January 2018 9:30am – 4:30pm

The basics required for setting up in independent practice. This will include topics such ashow to develop your practice, confidentiality, networks, supervision, CPD and managingchallenging issues.

Day Two Thursday 16th February 2018 9:30am – 4:00pm

This day covers issues related to finances and business management; including tendering,employment law and decisions about recruiting associates and/or employing clinicians.

Day Three Thursday 16th March 2018 9:30am – 4:30pm

Day Three focuses on the different types of work available and covers clinical issues inrelation to these. Types of work covered will include assessments within courts as anexpert witness for care proceedings, personal injury and criminal cases. It will also coverworking clinically across therapeutic models and age groups, covering individual and groupinterventions as well as providing consultations to specialist services.

Day Four Thursday 15th June 2018 10:00am – 3:00pm

This session offers a mentoring experience both within a group and individually to look atissues arising from setting up or maintaining your own practice. It will also target areas fordevelopment to move your work forward in line with your own aspirations.

The course can be booked on a day rate of £150 (plus VAT) or delegates can book all sixdays at a discounted rate of £450 (plus VAT). Fees include refreshments and a cold buffetlunch. All training will take place at our premises in Huddersfield.
