Working Group 1: IPPOG Membership
Pedro Abreu, Alberto Ruiz Jimeno, Uta Bilow, Ken Cecire, Bruce
Kennedy, Kyrzstof Wozniak, Jacek Szabelski
Working Group 1: IPPOG Membership
Group Instructions1. Consolidate benefits of IPPOG membership
2. Consolidate expectations (of new members)
3. Draft procedure to invite new members
4. Identify contents of new member package
5. Suggest next steps
1. Benefits for new members• Sharing (ideas, experiences, cultural perspectives,
knowledge, resources, contact databases, content in databases)
• Visibility (in & out) in: promotion (in the members community)out: to a larger audience
• Influence– Decisions / new programs/core activities– awareness of needs– Strategies/Policies– Calendar, etc.
2. Expectations of New Members
• Active participation• Shares networks of information, resources
(mainly knowledge & manpower) etc.• Increased engagement in outreach activities
(e.g. working with teachers/ students)
Prioritization of Core Activities for New Members
1. Ongoing support & information exchange2. Master classes (adapted to needs)3. Discovery packages (adapted to needs)4. IPPOG Database5. New IPPOG Webpage
3. Draft Procedure to invite new members
Outstanding questions• Is there an IPPOG constitution/mandate for inviting
new members, and is this being followed? Answer: Yes, but only for members states & experiment/lab representatives.
• Are there categories of membership (levels, countries, organizations/groups (or), lab’s / experiments, field of physics? Answer: Not formalized
• Target new members: who?
4. New Member Package
• Virtual!• Invitation letter (+ “constitution”)• What is IPPOG & Members/contact List • Access to Resources, Databases• IPPOG Page 1
5: Next Steps
• Create a working group to address the issues of membership, including:– procedures for inviting new members– New member package
Working Group 2: Methodologies
Michael Kobel, Nicolas Arnaud, LaurenzWidhalm, Catia Peduto, Maiken Pedersen, Konrad Jende
Working Group 2: Methodologies
Group Instructions1. Describe projects existing already (core activities) & what is common
between them = what is IPPOG’s role
2. Identify tasks necessary to reach these goals
3. Which tasks could IPPOG contribute to?
4. Some projects already have sufficient organization / structure but for those that don’t how could it be best organized (e.g. steering group)
5. What resources are
1. Existing?2. Needed? Where to get them from?
Website – 100% IPPOG activity
• Target audience(s)?• Structure/flexibility• Technical issues: use DRUPAL, hosted at CERN?• Need webmaster(s), editor(s), contributors• Maintenance Work (“x” % static, “y”% to be kept up to date)
• Need two parts:– Public (inc. database, disco packages, masterclasses)– Internal (inc. meeting minutes etc., working areas, wiki?)
• Two Steps: 1. Setting up, 2. Maintaining
Discovery Packages – 50%?• Need to define who we are working with, who does what etc.
– i.e. Memorandum of Understanding (with EPPCN, CERN, FNAL, Interactions, IPPOG, and?)
– Is there a Principle Investigator?– Steering group of all?
• Role of IPPOGNo: produce professional graphics, animationsYes: – collect & collate existing materials– develop new concepts & ideas – “atoms” for the packages (both pieces or
whole stories)– translations– keep packs up to date! (including pointing to discovery info if happened)– proliferate in countries (English language, local languages)
Database – 100% IPPOG (?) + LHC Experiments(?)
• Needs a web interface• Maintenance of entries• Advertisement, making it known to target
audience• Synergy with Discovery packages (collect best
practices in Database!)
Masterclasses – 100% IPPOG
• Video conference optimization• Iterations on measurements/analysis, etc.• DVD• Website (x2: Global of project, measurement/analysis)• Tools (ispy, Hypathia, …)• React on new physics results• All masterclass materials should go into the IPPOG
database• Some materials to use in discovery packages
Organizational Structure
• “Model” is the Masterclass Set-up• Establish Project Steering Committee– EVO meetings regularly throughout the year– Well defined tasks• DVD• Measurements• Website
– Possible external resources
Website Working Group
• Concept Group – 100% IPPOG• Persons to DO the work– Short term – 3-6 months – need external funding– Long term for maintenance – should be able to
find some of this from IPPOG members
Next Steps
• IPPOG members should sign-up to core projects with a realistic %age of your working time
• Identify more resources– Money – grants etc.– Person power (perhaps some in-kind)
• Prioritize the projects after seeing the available resources
Working Group 3 – Discovery Packages
Everyone else!
Working Group 3 & 4: Discovery Packages
Group Instructions1. List the audiences
2. Identify key messages (by audience?)
3. Identify what the audience needs and wants
4. What do all of these imply about the design of the website?
Topics
• Process of discovery as the foundation to everything• Higgs, SUSY, String theory, QGP, unification,
compositeness, Z’, W’, technicolor, gravity- black holes/ extra dimensions, fourth generation of particles, dark matter, matter-antimatter
• Non-discovery is as important!• Big questions are perhaps more important than
definite discoveries (setting limits, understanding statistical significance, What does it mean?, Who?, How?, What are the new
questions?, Why is it important?)
Audiences• IPPOG’s role is to provide the depth for the various
audiences. We will not produce press releases, etc.• Press/media (written, video, radio, media)
• Teachers (age appropriate)• Students (age appropriate)• Public• Politicians• Funders• Other Scientists• Science Communicators
Key Messages
• Teachers and Students = Process of Discovery
• Media & Press = Importance of Discovery & non-discovery & precision measurement
• Main Audience – General Public = Topic: What is mass?-Concept-Series of Questions-Very short text-Animations- shortSUBJECT QUESTIONS MATERIAL

Next Steps
• Brainstorm with teachers & students: what should a package for students look like? Propose draft.
• Sketch of a web-page (questions, answers, importance)
• Recommend to EPPCN that they have a focus group with the Press
• Form an IPPOG working group for Disco Packs!
