Tienen mucha belleza.

Hoy, ¿Qué quiere decir a Dios?

Deacon Paul

I have 42 Facebook friends. I use Facebook mostly to stay in touch and keep up with what is happening with my family and close friends. Pictures and postings help me to feel just a little more involved with the lives of people I love but who don’t live close to me. When I see their pictures and read their posts I feel a little less far away. I have noticed that sometimes my family or friends say things on Facebook that are different from the usual posts. They say something that comes from somewhere deep inside. Sometimes it is an unexpected message of gratitude for the blessings in their life. Sometimes it is a message about feeling lost or confused or needing an answer to a crisis. I think they are messages to God. For example, this week one of my Facebook friends posted this message:

Love is an extraordinary feeling; its powerful, it's unconditional, it's

selfless, it's kind. Love has no boundaries and that means being

relentless with those you love. Great vibes, spreading it out to everyone!!

Through Facebook I sometimes hear my family and friends speak extraordinary and beautiful prayers. They are prayers that I have never heard before. They are different from the prayers we say together at Mass. They are different from the prayers that we were taught in school. They are prayers that rise up from the very personal story of someone’s life. They are born in the darkness of doubt when someone can’t seem to find an answer. They are prayers born in the joy of seeing life in a new way. They are prayers that rise up from the heart. They flow through busy fingers on a keyboard typing away late at night and they are projected out into the air of cyberspace.

They are the prayers of someone reaching out for the hand of God! All forms of prayer offer us a pathway to find God. Sometimes, the best path is the one that we create. Sometimes the best prayer is the one that no one else has ever spoken. Sometimes the best prayer is the one that belongs only to us. In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus teaches us how to find our private prayer for God. He says: “When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private.” What do you really want to say to God? This week take time to sit quietly. Be patient and wait. Leave the noise from your busy life behind and listen for the prayer that your heart is waiting to speak to the Father.

Prayer of Thomas Merton My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.

I do not see the road ahead of me.

I cannot know for certain where it will end.

Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that

I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.

And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.

I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.

And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,

though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, will I trust you always,

though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.

I will not fear, for you are ever with me,

and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”

amen.

The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.

Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.

Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.

Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”

We invite you to join the Pilot readership today for only $19.95. This limited-time offer saves you 49% off the regular subscription rate. Thank you for your support.
