Good Morning!
Thank you
for being a part of

Summit

Dan Milman wrote…
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

“The definition of insanity is
doing the same thing, the
same way, and expecting a
different result.”

We change not
for the sake of
change -
but to be

The Concept of Change
To be successful in helping
focus
our regions’ and clubs’

For SIA to be successful:
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
For Almost 100 Years …
SIA has been
steadfast in helping
countless women and
girls on their journeys
toward self-
determination and
success.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Thomas Jefferson Once Said …
“I like the dreams of the
future better than the history
of the past.”
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
But we are obligated
to look toward the
future!
SIA has a Wonderful, Rich Past
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
We must understand
when we need to
change—not for the
sake of change, but
when change will make
us stronger and more
successful.
The World Has Changed
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
To prepare for our future, the Big Goal concept of Shaping the Future of Soroptimist for Increased Collective Impact was introduced at the 2012 Hawaii convention. This Big Goal will take us through the end of our first century in 2021 and into our second century.
Shaping the Future for Increased Collective Impact
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
• We meet the needs of more disadvantaged women and girls through our Dream Programs
• We are well known or our brand is, for the impact we have on disadvantaged women and girls
• We attract financial support for our programs, and
• We engage more people in our mission through our clubs and our online community—LiveYourDream.org
Our Big Goal of Increased Collective Impact Means a Future Where:
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
A big goal focuses an organization on a single, medium- to long- term goal that is bold, perhaps overconfident, inspirational, and likely regarded by the members as a stretch to accomplish.
Why a Big Goal?
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
It’s that stretch that
drives us beyond our
local mindset to the
idea of cohesive,
“glocal” mindset to
accomplish greater
impact together.
A “Glocal” Mindset
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
The word glocal—
which combines the
words local and
global—means to
embody both local and
global action.
Glocal
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
We must work as one—come together glocally—to focus on a common agenda with our programs designed to serve our 20 countries and territories and their myriad cultures and needs.
A Global Organization
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
How Our Organization is Perceived
Locally and globally will only be as strong as our unity and focus
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Together We Can Do So Much
For too many years we have worked in isolation, locally or
regionally. We have lost appreciation for what SIA—our system of
clubs, assisted by our region leadership, led by our SIA Board of
Directors and supported by our dedicated headquarters team —
can accomplish when we work as one.
Or as Helen Keller
put it, "Alone we
can do so little,
together we can do
so much."
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Membership: The Number One Barrier
This is what you told us -
Membership ranked highest,
as the number one barrier to
increasing our collective
impact. Concerns were
declining and aging
membership; lack of
commitment and involvement
by members; and meeting
times and locations.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Stabilizing Membership Loss
Your Board was proactive.
They approved a Senior
Director of Membership be
added to staff to direct
our membership efforts to
create new clubs and
stabilize our membership
loss. We are already
seeing progress, having
reduced our loss rate last
year by 30%.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Public Awareness and Financial Support
Today we are experiencing
more and diverse funders and
growth in public awareness
through digital marketing
efforts.
This will translate into more
awareness of what our brand
and club activities.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Our Next Big Goal
With our barriers being addressed, we have begun to engage clubs in the development of our NEXT Big Goal to start in October 2021 and carry us through 2031.
The first exercise and survey in 2015 asked clubs to dream about our next century of helping women and girls and to think about concepts that hold them back from realizing their dreams.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Big Goal
We had a good result, with 48 percent of clubs responding to the survey. One Big Goal concept rose to the top: Invest in the dreams of disadvantaged women and girls through access to education. This was also the first choice of our Board of Directors, the Fundraising Council and the SIA staff.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Clubs Said This Goal:
Reflects the service clubs deliver today, and it
Reflects the service clubs want to do in the future
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT| 2017
How Big Is Our Dream?
Now that we have defined
where we want to go, we
must determine how many
women and girls we can
realistically reach … just
how big is our dream?
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Invest in the Dreams of 1 Million Women and Girls
The Big Goal statement
we tested was “Invest in
the dreams of 1 million
women and girls.” This is
definitely inspirational …
but can our organization
achieve this over a ten-
year period?
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Invest in the Dreams of 1 Million Women and Girls
Annually, our organization
reaches about 1,300 women
through the Live Your Dream
Awards and 8,000 girls
through Dream It, Be It.
If our reach stayed the same,
this would mean almost
100,000 women and girls
would receive our help over 10
years. Not a million but
headed in the right direction.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Invest in the Dreams of 1 Million Women and Girls
We don’t want our reach to be unrealistic, nor do we don’t want it to be static because we know many of you are frustrated by our current pace. One member told us, “We can’t build capacity the way it is currently being invested. I want more and am tired of doing it incrementally just 1,200 women at a time.”
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
20 Million Women and Girls need our help!
There are about 20 million disadvantaged women and girls in SIA’s 20 countries and territories who need our programs. 20 million!
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Imagine if we worked together
and made our Dream programs the center of our club work?
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Women and Girls Continue to Face Obstacles
While women have made strides in their quest for gender equality, the sad fact is women and girls—simply because they are born female—continue to face myriad obstacles to their success.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Women and Girls Continue to Face Obstacles
For far too many women
and girls, the path to
success is derailed by
obstacles including
poverty, gender-based
violence, sex trafficking,
homelessness, and teen
pregnancy.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Our Focus
We focus on disadvantaged women with dependents because they face significant obstacles to pursuing an education and because their success has a positive ripple effect on their families and communities.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Our Focus
And we focus on disadvantaged girls who face obstacles including poverty, unstable home lives, foster care, or teen pregnancy. We reach out to these girls so they will have access to the resources and information to overcome the barriers to their future success.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Help More Women and Girls
So while we don’t yet know the number of women and girls we think our cohesive efforts will yield for our next big goal, we know that our collective desire is to help more women and girls overcome these obstacles.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Working As One
To realize the Big Goal
of increasing our Dream
Programs’ capacity in our
second century, we will
have to work as one.
Specifically, we all have
to recommit to and focus
on our Dream Programs
as our local club projects.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Working As One
Recommitting to our Dream Programs does not mean giving up support of programs that end the obstacles that can derail a woman or girl’s life. We’re just asking you to have your clubs think about how our Dream Programs address these obstacles in a different way.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Working As One
The reality is, very few resources exist to help women and girls after their crisis move on to realize their potential. Our
programs, which are measured and tracked for impact, fill that gap.
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Dream Programs
If poverty, violence,
trafficking, teen
pregnancy or women’s
health is important to you
and the clubs in your
region, you can rest
assured that increased
participation in our Dream
Programs will address all
these obstacles in a very
tangible way….
CRR PRESIDENTS’ LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | 2017
Different Training Tools
“Sometimes it takes a while to recognize that someone has a special ability to get us to believe in ourselves, to tie that belief to our highest ideals, and to imagine that together we can do great things. In those rare moments, when such a person comes along, we need to put aside our plans and reach for what we know is possible.”
