Welcome to 2020 and the promise of a new year and a new decade! In the last ten years, the asphalt industry continued to rebound from the Great Recession, watched a tremendous bull market on Wall Street, and kept pace with a growing economy. We saw acquisitions and consolidations in our industry and welcomed new asphalt related companies to Virginia. Overall, we were part of a transition that continues to reshape the transportation industry.

The opportunities this decade holds for our personal and professional lives is anyone’s guess. The entire transportation industry is faced with a labor shortage at a time when infrastructure spending is increasing. As spending is increasing, so are the environmental regulations on our projects and at our facilities. While our industry has worked to be environmentally conscious for decades using recycled asphalt materials and other by-products, new regulations must be understood and adopted.

Given the challenges facing our industry, VAA staff has developed a focused agenda for the 2020 Annual Meeting. Over the two-day event, speakers and panels will address workforce concerns, environmental regulations, legislative outcomes, and VDOT initiatives. Do not miss this opportunity to learn from these speakers, while networking with your peers and customers during group outings and social times. Please join me at the Kingsmill Resort for VAA’s 2020 Annual Meeting!

Scott Claud2019–2020 VAA President

Keynote

Generation Z started entering the workforce in 2017. 11,000 new Gen Z enter the workforce every day. Like every other generation, Gen Z has a unique perspective of the world and particular expectation of the workplace.  Soon, Generation Z will have a major presence in the workplace and the marketplace. You might think that because Gen Z comes right behind the “Me-Centric” Millennial they are very similar. They are, however, different from Millennials in many ways. The “We-Centric” Gen Z has different values, preferences, and perspectives. Karen will address Gen Z’s view on communication, technology, retention, promotions, work ethic, and fears.  You will gain insights on new ways of managing, giving feedback, as well as motivating  the “new kids on the block”, Generation Z.
