Workflow

For my environment, I started with the flat environment. I had a task to make an environment with mountains, so I raised the ground with the raise/lower terrain tool to

make mountains around the edge of varying heights. I then left the center flat, with a small passage through the mountains. From the screenshot above, you can see that I then painted

the terrain accordingly – The grass on the flatlands and some of the mountaintops, whilst the majority of the mountains were painted with a rocky texture, with sand and water on

the plateau.

I began to add other details to my environment, at the moment it’s just basic things like more detailed/realistic rocks and mountains. For example, I’ve added a river flowing from the top of another mountain down to the base, where I have ideas of adding a house, or a

fish dock.

I decided I would extend the the shallow river above to stretch across the whole map, to which has a secluded grass area where I will add a house and some plants, perhaps more

assets that suit. I also added a bridge asset for crossing the water, to make it accessable and more realistic.

I also decided to change the texture of the rocks and mountains for my game, as the previous texture, I found, was rather “blocky” and you could tell where the png stopped and

started. This one is a lighter, more seamless rock texture.

This is an image of the bridge I added for access over the river, to the field of wheat below. I first had one, small bridge, and I duplicated them and glued them together to make a bigger one, as just the one bridge wouldn’t reach. I decided for it to be a “rickety” style bridge, as

the environment is supposed to have a rural feel.

These are a pile of fertilizer bags sat beside one of the fence frames for the fencing of my field, which will soon contain wheat and brown dirt. I added it to make it seem more “life-

like” as I felt it appropriate for the farm to still seem tended for.

I added a muddy soil texture to the ground within the fence in my environment, as I plan to put a wheat farm on top of the soil. I was then going to add the wheat to my game.

This is a picture of my wheat/grass I added to inside the fences, and there was a wide dirt path through the middle of the farm, from the front to back where you can then see the

house that I added.

The screenshot is of a medieval house I imported in to my environment, accompanied by a rock infront of the house. I may add flowers and bushes to around the front and sides of the

house, to make it feel livelier.

I have begun adding trees to my environment, specifically willow. I added a couple bushes and rocks at the base trunk of the tree, just to add that extra element of realism.

I began to also add normal maps to my texture and terrain too, as seen above. I created them easily with an online tool, http://cpetry.github.io/NormalMap-Online/ which creates normal maps for any image or texture, and allows you to edit various details of the map.

I’ve added a few more buildings to my map, this specific one was supposed to look like a medieval styled pub. I also added cobblestone paths between each house, and to the bridge

to the farm. I plan to fill the rest with woodlands or forest.
