Youth Action for Peace Deutschland yap-cfd e.V. ... is a nation wide union of people who try to build bridges of understanding and to mitigate misery. The main request of Yap-cfd is, to reduce national and cultural prejudices and animosity among people and to promote mutual tolerance. We started already around 1923 as circle of people engaged against the war. As a Non Profit Organisation acknowledged by the government as providing youth exchange and political education, Yap-cfd organises nowadays international workcamps in Germany and places young people in workcamps all over the world. These international meetings shall help young people to get to know different cultures and social systems by experience so that they can reflect their own cultural ideas and communicate with others about cultural norms and differences. Furthermore, Yap-cfd puts stress on the placement and the care for medium and long term volunteers within the European Union, Africa, Asia and Latin America. Yap-cfd gives young people the opportunity to learn: About other people, other cultures, how is to live in group, to find decisions together... We offer a range of seminars every year to train facilitators for a workcamp and to prepare volunteers going abroad. There are still activities regarding the peace movement, especially against atomic weapons. Mostly young people use the Pressehütte for seminars. The work: In the first days we will get to know each other and the historical place we are staying. Terminal: Schwäbisch-Gmünd station. Next airport: Stuttgart

CPD08 Eilenburg 06.08. - 20.08.11 MANU Vol: 15 Language: English, German Age: 18-26

The project: Eilenburg is a small town with approx. 17 000 inhabitands, situated on the border of the „Dübener Heide“ and approximately 25km from the exhibition city Leipzig. Eilenburg’s rich history of over a thousand years, makes it easy to call it one of the cradles of Saxony. The continuous rule of the Wettins-dynasty beginning with the Earl of Ilburg in the 11th century was carried on until 1918. Part of their territory is the state of Saxony

today. In medieval times Eilenburg’s main business was brewery. Martin Luther was a common guest in the prosperous city. In the following centuries the small village Eilenburg emerged as a city dominated by industry. In April 1945, Eilenburg was almost completely destroyed. The „Sorbenturm“ is the only remaining part of the Ilburg. It was assumedly built in the 12th century at the highest part of the 220m x 150m plateau. A loop foodpath outside the castle wall connects the „Sorbenturm“ with the „Amtshaus”(deanery), the former county court. First parts of this path has been renewed with the help of the volunteers in the last two workcamps. Next part shall be renovated in your workcamp The work: The participants carry out simple manual work like the enclosure of the loop path with pavement, the anchorage with renal gravel and the construction of a safety rail. Therefore it is necessary to bring work clothes, raingear and sturdy shoes. The leisure time: The program for leisure time will be organised together with the local Eilenburg youth groups and clubs. The focus lies here on the encounter and the exchange with local adolescents. Also there are sports activities such as soccer, volleyball, swimming and bowling. In addition there will be a cultural program. A trip to Leipzig and Dresden is scheduled. You can get to know the rich history of Eilenburg through guided tours in the museum and in the cellars, located in the hill in the center if the city.

The accommodation: The volunteers will live in the local youth centre „House IV“. The group can cook for itself in a modern kitchen. Sleeping bags and camping mats should be brought by you. Terminal: Eilenburg, via Leipzig, closest Airports: Leipzig-Halle, Berlin

CPD09 Giessen 06.08. - 20.08.11 SOCI, REFUGEE Vols:12 Age: 18-26 Language English/German The project: The central Asylum Centre for asylum seekers in Hessen is located in the city of Giessen. There are currently about 150 Asylum- seekers in Giessen who came to seeking asylum in Germany out of various reasons, e.g. political, ethnic, religious, persecution or poverty. Usually they stay at the facility for months until a decision has been made about their asylum application. Sometimes they are sent to other centres or to other so called- “safe countries” where they entered the European Union, or to their countries of origin. Most of the people living in the Asylum Centre in Giessen are from Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Eritrea and Balkan: Young man, women, children and older people. The asylum seekers live under simple conditions and are not allowed to work or leave the district in which they live. Their permission to stay in Germany is often quite limited and so is their contact with the locals living in the city. The international volunteers are invited to the Asylum centre for two weeks to take part in the daily life of the refugees. In the study part of the camp, we want to discuss the situation of refugees in Germany and Europe, as well as the current developments in the area of Asylum-policies. We want to get in contact with the residents of the Asylum Centre so that we can learn about their stories, difficulties and perspectives. The work: Together with the refugees we want to organise common activities, where the women and children are taken into consideration. In addition, our goal is to get in contact with the young members of the local protestant church to raise greater awareness for the refugees and to break the isolation of the refugees. Ee will prepare contact with students of the university that are willing to take care of the medical issues of the refugees and to pursue the legal issues of the asylum law. We will also get in contact with students of the University who medicate peoples without legal status. We especially invite volunteers to participate, who are able to speak Turkish, Arabic or Farsi. Besides organising common activities with the refugees we want to work together in the reception centre to maintain the playground and to renovate the café. Surrounding area and accommodation: Giessen, a city populated mostly by students, it is located in the mid-west of Germany. Giessen is easy to reach via the Airports in Frankfurt and Frankfurt Hahn. There are plenty of possibilities for leisure time activities like playing soccer or canoeing as well as possibilities to visit some other cities. (e.g. Marburg, Frankfurt or Heidelberg). The work camp will be hosted by a local protestant church which is already involved in working with the refugees. The premises of the church are plentiful and for that we will have a lot of space for sleeping, cooking, dining, relaxing, indoor and outdoor activities.

CPD10 Sievershausen 07.08. - 21.08.11 RENO, STUDY, PEACE Vol: 20 Language: English, German Age: 18- 26 Project: More than 40 years ago, when the Vietnam war escalated, we started to promote peace in Sievershausen. In an old barn sleeping- and seminar-rooms were established. The „Antikriegswerkstatt” became the nucleus of the Peace Centre “Antikriegshaus Sievershausen”. Expansions and further reorganisations followed. Now there are several buildings, surrounded by a nice park, including a guest house and a museum with an assembly hall. The Antikriegshaus is at the verge of a village with about 2500 inhabitants. Sievershausen lies 30 kilometers east of the Lower Saxony provincial capital Hanover at the freeway to Berlin. Work: Volunteers will paint “Window of Peace” within the village, a wall for posters and other artwork, also for announcements concerning our work for peace. This means carpentry and painting. Volunteers with a talent for designing are also welcome. There is a nice garden around the buildings of the centre. We will do some garden work as well as renovating a (small) parking lot.

Study-part: We will visit the former concentration camp of Bergen Belsen, the memorial of the division of Germany at the former border between the two Germanys and have lessons on the items of the former division of Europe and the peaceful revolution which marked its end, including a meeting with well-known german writer and eye witness of the revolution Freya Klier. Accomodation: The accommodation of the participants is

carried out in 4 - bed rooms. Lodging and board are free. Terminal: Haemelerwald near Hannover (train from Hannover to Braunschweig)

CPD11 Bad Sooden Allendorf 12.08. – 26.08.11, RENO Vol: 14 Language: English, German Age: 18- 26 The project: The Youth Center of Allendorf needs your help in renovating the building. Bad Sooden – Allendorf isa small town which actually consists of two parts, which once has been regular cities on its own. The river Werra flows between both parts, still marking the lost dividing line. Bad Sooden - Allendorf counts 5 000 inhabitants in both cities and about 4500 in the surrounding villages. Next bigger cities are Göttingen and Kassel. Before 1989, the reunion of the both Germanies, it was situated on the very edge of the federal republic. Now it “moved” to the heard of the one and big Germany. The museum “Schifflers-Grund” still shows the situation, when there was the “iron curtain”. We will visit this museum and learn about the history of the place.

Page 12: workcamps Youth Action for Peace Deutschland …...2 Youth Action for Peace Deutschland yap-cfd e.V. ... is a nation wide union of people who try to build bridges of understanding

The work: You will renovate the facade of the youth center, mainly painting the wall and the windows. To improve the outdoor facilities, you will assemble a basketball basket and two goals for soccer. Leisure time: Using the facilities of the youth center, meetings with kids of the town, canoeing on the Werra, swimming in the pool... From 19th to the 23rd of August there will be the annual city festival with a parade through the city. You are invited to be part of it ! Accomodation: In the youth center of Bad Sooden-Allendorf. Please bring sleeping bag and Isolating sheet with you. Terminal: Bad Sooden-Allendorf, via Göttingen. Next airports: Hannover, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt

CPD17 Escherode Gastwerke 12.08. - 27.08.2011 Vols: 14 MANU, CONS, STUDY Language: English, German Age: 18- 26 The project: We at Gastwerke are an intentional community of 30 people in the middle of Germany (near Kassel). We have a seminar house, an organic vegetable farm with huge greenhouses, a small Health Food store, a woodworking shop as well as homeopathy practice We live in a commune, meaning that we share our salaries. We have a completely collectivized internal economy, with no private ownership of buildings, of the means of production or of motor vehicles. All income is pooled and each person takes out what she or he needs. There are no ready-made concepts for the building of new ways of living. The challenges are too complex. Our community is a living organism, constantly changing according to the needs of its members. As our visitor you too will be a part of this organism for a certain time. This will be, for sure, an inspiring experience. The work: Since we are a rather new community there is still a lot of landscaping and construction work going on. This year we will focus on a new camp site including the construction of solar showers, compost toilets, fencing and maybe even a small eco-dome. Studypart: You will get an insight of communal living in an intentional community, as well as on organic farming, and eco architecture. Living and working within a small ecovillage of 30 people between 1 and 60 years old, is an experience by itself. Leisure time: Escherode is located at the edge of huge natural reserve area. There are plenty of opportunities for beautiful hikes, bike rides, bird watching or just to enjoy the beauty of the nature. Only 14 km away is the city of Kassel. Kassel is internationally known for the documenta art exhibition but also for its magnificent parks. There will be excursions to Kassel as well as to the old university town of Göttingen.
