The good news is there are a healthy 593 vessels listed in the 2008 Construction Survey. The

bad news is that it represents a drop of more than a third from last year’s sur-vey, which contained 933 vessels. The 2007 survey included 786 vessels.

The biggest change occurred in the patrol boat category, which came in with 94, well off last year’s 278. On the positive side, the pushboat/towboat category jumped from 98 in the 2008 survey to 110 this year.

The weak economy has had an effect, particularly in the passenger vessel sec-tor. However, more passenger vessels (31) appeared in this year’s survey than the last survey (27), before the reces-sion had taken hold. The reason, of course, is that vessels are ordered well in advance. And with shipyard slots at a premium the last few years, some new passenger vessels are entering the market at an inopportune time.

There was also plenty of business in the repowering market last year for passenger vessels, but this year is a dif-ferent story.

“You’re not seeing that now,” said Andy Lebet of DeJong & Lebet, Jack-sonville, Fla. “That’s really fallen off.”

This year’s survey includes vessels under construction, under contract, or delivered over the past 12 months. A total of 57 yards are in this year’s sur-

vey, compared to 61 in the 2007 survey. The survey is compiled from ques-

tionnaires, boats covered by WorkBoat over the past 12 months, Web sites, newsletters, press releases, financial reports and other sources. Several yards have only one vessel listed. This does not necessarily mean there are no other vessels at the yard. For various reasons, some vessel owners do not want their boats listed in the survey. Some ship-yards also request that their contracts be excluded.

Edison Chouest Offshore, Galliano, La., does not appear in this year’s survey, but the company, which owns a number of shipyards, has certainly been busy. ECO broke ground on a new yard in Houma, La., called LaShip, and pur-chased Tampa Bay Shipbuilding & Repair Co. from Bender Shipbuilding

& Repair Co., Mobile, Ala.ECO assumed management and op-

eration of Tampa Bay Shipbuilding in early December. The facility provides Chouest with capacity for new con-struction and the repair of much larger vessels.

This year’s survey marks the last time that Bay Shipbuilding Co. and Marinette Marine Corp. will appear under the Manitowoc Marine Group listing. Manitowoc sold its marine group to Fincantieri Marine Group Holdings Inc. for $120 million in 2008.

Also changing hands this year was Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. The Freeland, Wash., shipyard was purchased by Ice Flow LLC, backed by Dallas-based Treadstone Capital Management, for $9.2 million.
