In 1959, world-renowned architect Eero Saarinen began designs for a work environment like the world had never
seen. The facility’s unique open plan enabled brilliant minds to roam, collaborate and converse—fostered by
the seamless interplay between design and nature. Here at Bell Labs, researchers developed the breakthrough
inventions that would usher in the modern age.

1933Cosmic Radio Waves
Karl Jansky discovers three types of static: nearby thunderstorms,
distant thunderstorms, and the center of the Milky Way, at
Crawford Hill, Holmdel, NJ.
1947Transistor
Invented by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley,
this fundamental building block of modern electronic devices won the
Nobel Prize in 1956.
1958Laser
A process was perfected for making light in an extremely pure
form, enabling all of the digital laser technologies of today.
1962Telstar
First telecommunications satellite to relay television pictures,
telephone calls and fax images through space, as well as
providing the first live transatlantic television feed.
1963Touch-tone Telephone
This revolutionary telephone enabled the first use of voicemail
and call centers.
1964The Big Bang
The Nobel Prize–winning discovery of cosmic-microwave background
radiation is one of the strongest pieces of evidence supporting the “Big Bang” theory of the origin of
the universe.
1978-80Digital Cellular Phone
Connected the country wirelessly, paving the way for all future mobile
technologies and applications.
1984C++ Programming
Developed by Bjarne Stroustrup, C and C++ remain two of the most
widely used programming languages and have influenced many
other languages, such as Java.
1988Fiber Optics
A cable able to transmit data is laid across the floor of the Atlantic,
leading to global connectivity.
