Optional Project – particularly for those children not coming to school at the moment.

If you would like to take part in a nature study, we have put together a few ideas of activities you might like to carry out when you have completed your Google Classroom tasks. Please do not feel you must do them...they are optional for your enjoyment. If you would like to upload photos for us to see, that would be lovely.

Writing/Reading

Your work for the next two weeks is mainly focussed on persuasive writing and adverts.

Day

1 8th June

Spelling –ought and aught. These spelling patterns make the sound ‘ort’. Complete Look, Say, Cover, Write sheets. A copy of these is included. If you don’t want to print it out, you may write the words neatly into your book. Use the link https://www.spellzone.com/word_lists/list-33.htm to look at the words and sentences. Then scroll down to play the games below or click on the link https://www.spellzone.com/word_lists/games-33.htm to access them. The games are free for single players. Please write your scores in your book.

Key features of adverts can include - snappy slogans e.g. ‘Mustard Munch – the snack that kicks back’ - exaggeration e.g. ‘the holiday of a lifetime’ - intriguing questions e.g. ‘How would you feel if you never had to tidy your room again?’ - appealing adjectives e.g. velvety chocolate - wordplay e.g. rhyming, alliteration, similes, puns - tempting descriptions of benefits e.g. ‘After just 10 minutes in a Mello bubble bath, you’ll feel

soothed, relaxed and refreshed. Look at an advert for Sudz and answer the following questions in your book. What is being advertised.? What language does the advertiser use to persuade you to buy it? What claims do they make? How many of the features above can you find in the advert? Can you think of other examples of advertising on television/radio where persuasive language is used? Choose at least 2 adverts from the four given and identify as many of the key features above as possible. You could either print them and annotate them, or list the features and write examples from the adverts alongside them.

3 10th June

This is your opportunity to watch lots of television adverts! Find slogans used for famous products or companies. These could be from television, magazines or billboards. Make a list of well-known ones. You might also like to talk to parents and grandparents about ones that they remember from past times. Choose your top 5 slogans and write why you think they are so effective. For fun we’ve included a link to some memorable adverts from the 1980s that you and your parents might enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86CZQGdxyMs

4 11th June

Let us introduce you to VIP! VIP is an amazing powder that enhances the flavour of all foods. We have included some adverts that have been used in the VIP campaign and we would like you to create a new one over the next two days. Spend this lesson, planning and drafting your VIP advert. We have provided a self assessment table so you can see the features we are looking for.

5 12th June

Complete your perfect VIP advert. It should have at least one image and plenty of persuasive language and clever word play. Complete the self assessment table to assess how good your work is. Turn this work in to Google Classrooms if you are able to.

6 15th June

Spelling –ture. This spelling pattern makes the sound ‘cher’. Complete Look, Say, Cover, Write sheets. A copy of these is included. If you don’t want to print it out, you may write the words neatly into your book. In the resources below there is a worksheet of ‘ture’ anagrams. Please match them to the words written at the bottom. If you have time, you could then find other words containing ‘ture’ in your reading book or dictionary and write a list of them.

7 16th June

Chocolate manufacturers work hard to make their chocolates sound tempting to their customers. When describing their chocolates, they use a range of adjectives and verbs to make it feel as if you are indulging in a luxurious experience when you’re eating them. Look at descriptions of chocolates – we have included some in this pack. Make a list of adjectives and verbs which have been used in order to make the chocolates sound extra special.

8 17th June

Imagine that you are working for the design and advertising departments of a chocolate company. They want to create a new box of chocolates containing at least 6 different chocolates. Think carefully about the type of chocolates you would like. It would be a good idea to include milk, dark and white chocolates, soft and hard centres and a variety of different flavours. Create a leaflet to be placed inside the chocolate box,

Page 3: Work Set For Each Day Week 1...This will require a full page magazine advert along with a written script for an accompanying radio or TV advertisement. Today, draft out your advertising

similar to the example you looked at yesterday. Your leaflet should contain a carefully drawn and coloured picture of each chocolate and a tempting, carefully worded description of it.

9 18th June

Listen to some radio or TV adverts for food products. We have included links to some here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHFKE6PD_6U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcZ_-KTGO-0 Over the next two days you are going to produce an advertising campaign for your new box of chocolates. This will require a full page magazine advert along with a written script for an accompanying radio or TV advertisement. Today, draft out your advertising campaign ideas.

10 19th June

Look at your drafts from yesterday and edit and improve them to make them the best they can be. Maybe you could conduct some market research by asking someone in your house or class to listen to your script and assess how persuasive it is. Finish your advertising campaign. If you are able to, you could film or record your advert too. Turn this work in to Google Classrooms if you are able to.

This week we will be finishing our Science topic about Light and then beginning a new PSHE topic about the UK

Parliament. You do not need to print out the worksheet if you would prefer not to. Instead you could answer

the questions directly in your book.

Day Work to be completed

1 8th

June

Science – What are some uses of light? Complete the Oak National Academy lesson using the link attached. https://www.thenational.academy/year-4/foundation/what-are-some-uses-of-light-year-4-wk6-3 This revises and continues the work you began in Year 3. The activity involves completing an introductory quiz, watching the teaching video, completing all the activities given on it and finishing with a post lesson quiz. Please write answers to the questions given in the video in full sentences and draw the periscope diagram carefully. Then, plan how you want to create a shadow puppet theatre – you will be making this tomorrow. If you are in school tomorrow, please bring in a cardboard box – a shoe box or cereal box is perfect, some sellotape, something to stick onto your puppets to move them (e.g. lolly sticks, straws, pipe cleaners, wooden skewers, small sticks) and a light source if possible e.g. a torch.

2 9th

June

Today you are going to make your own shadow puppet theatre and put on a show.

Cut out the front of the box and stick tissue paper, baking paper, tracing paper or thin white paper in front to make a screen.

Cut out scenery from black or dark paper and stick it behind the screen.

Make your puppets and attach them to sturdy ‘movers’ e.g. lolly sticks

Shine a light source behind the screen.

Prepare your script and present your show. There is a link here to help you if you need it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBwLs2lyWgU If you are doing this at home, if you are able to take photos and stick them in your book or make a video and upload it to Google Classroom, we would love to see it.

3 10th June

What is the UK Parliament? Look at the PowerPoint named Day 3 10th June to learn about the structure of Parliament (including the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Monarch), the role of Parliament and how it differs from that of the Government. When you have finished using the PowerPoint, complete Activity 1: What is the UK Parliament worksheet using the knowledge you gained earlier. Finally, complete Activity 2: What issues are important to you. Choose an issue that is important to you and write a short persuasive paragraph about why it matters to you and what you would like Parliament to do.

4 11th June

The House of Commons and House of Lords. Look at the PowerPoint named Day 4 11th June to learn about the House of Commons and the House of Lords – who they are, what they do, and how their members are chosen. When you have finished using the PowerPoint, complete Activity 1: The House of Commons and the House of Lords discussion questions worksheet using the knowledge you gained earlier. Finally, complete Activity 2: Write to your MP. If you wanted to actually send your comments, the MP for High Wycombe is Steve Baker. The best way for residents of the Wycombe constituency to contact him is by sending an email to [email protected] including your local postcode.

5 12th June

Debating in Parliament. Look at the PowerPoint named Day 5 12th June to learn about what is involved in parliamentary debating and why it is important. With the current health situation, you may have difficulty in watching the live Parliamentary channel linked to in the PowerPoint. Instead, we have included a link to an older debate with a former Prime Minister – David Cameron. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX2flDrxsHA This is quite long, so you only need to watch around 10 minutes of it. When you have finished using the PowerPoint, complete Activity 1: Watching a Parliamentary debate worksheet using the knowledge you gained earlier.

6 15th June

Last week we looked at debates in the House of Commons. Today you are going to make notes that MPs could use in a debate. First select a motion for debate. This could be any issue that you feel strongly about but we have provided a few ideas below in case you would prefer one of these.

Should uniform be worn by all school children?

Should pocket money be paid out weekly and should it be the same for all children in the UK?

Should the voting age be lowered from 18 to 16 in all nations of the UK?

Page 15: Work Set For Each Day Week 1...This will require a full page magazine advert along with a written script for an accompanying radio or TV advertisement. Today, draft out your advertising

Should all buses and trains be free for people aged under 16?

You need to give at least 3 points for the motion and 3 points against the motion. These should be written in some detail and include facts and statistics as well as opinions (you can make up the statistics!) If you are at home for this lesson, you could encourage someone from your household to carry out the debate with you, using your notes. Maybe another member could become the Speaker to keep order!

7 16th June

Look at the PowerPoint named Day 7 16th June to discover how laws are made and why they are important. When you have finished using the PowerPoint, complete Activity 1: Making Laws quiz worksheet using the knowledge you gained earlier. Then, imagine you are an MP and wish to suggest a new law. What would it be and why is it necessary? Write the speech that you would make to the House of Commons to persuade your colleagues to begin the law making process.

8 17th June

Elections and Voting. Look at the PowerPoint named Day 8 17th June to learn about democracy in the UK, including how general elections work and how governments are formed. When you have finished using the PowerPoint, complete Activity 1: Elections and Voting quiz worksheet using the knowledge you gained earlier.

9 18th June

Reading Comprehension Election Hustings. Hustings are a meeting at which candidates in an election address potential voters. Read the information about the election candidates and use it to answer the questions related to them. Please complete as many as you can in 40 minutes and answer in full sentences.

10 19th June

Today you are going to make your own political party and write a manifesto that you would hope to be elected on. Make some notes on the planning sheet called Run Your Own Mock Election and then produce a leaflet to hand to the electorate. It should contain your name, picture, party name and information about your political beliefs and how you will serve your constituents. If you wish, you could turn this into Google Classroom.

Nature Watch

The children at school are taking part in a 4 week nature watch. If you are

not coming to school at the moment, you may like to participate in this at

home. This is an optional, non-compulsory project. If you do it, and would

like to upload photos for us to see, that would be lovely.

During this time, the nature in your garden is changing. Over this half

term, look out and note what you see happening.

Look at birds, insects, animals, plants, trees etc.

Keep a record of what you notice – this could be in writing, pictures,

photographs, surveys etc.

We have given you some ideas for activities below, but you may have lots

of other great ideas too.

Make a pit-fall trap by sinking a plastic cup/pot into the ground.

Cover it partly with a piece of wood in case it rains, then check it

regularly.

Holding an old white sheet or large piece of paper under a bush or

tree, then shaking the branches can mean a deluge of exciting bugs
