Connecting the Fabric

Senior: IP-BIM Studio Coordinator: Gil Snyder RA and James Dicker RATeam of: Dana Abdallah, Derek Vosters, and Tony Chitwood

Located in downtown Milwaukee, the site of the high rise is monumental to growth and redevelopment in the city. This Milwaukee lake front site is located with in the Central Busi-ness District which continues to provide inspiration for the transformation of this historic site, into iconic morphological center for the city. Currently the heart of Milwaukee is very much underutilized divided into two separate parts because of the I-794 highway, the Third Ward and the Central Business District. This high rise proposal would mend the break in the city and allow for redevelopment, offer-ing a new face to Milwaukee. The scar from the highway is envisioned as a constructed landscape that modifies the terrain, offering a unimpeded pedestrian flow from north to south. While the pedestrian routes connect the north and south, large program volumes front the Lake imploring important visual connections to the greater site.

condition is also carried out through the bridge. The bridge is suspended from a series of beams that span the bridge. This system allows the bridge to go off the structural grid and create dynamic spaces throughout the architecture.

The site of the high rise sits on a 28 foot plinth, severing any foot traffic that may be present on the street level. This design gracefully addresses the sectional change throughout the site with a large bridge that connects downtown Milwaukee and the Third ward. The bridge does a good job connecting the city scale; however it also is interconnected with the high rise. It successfully creates entrances into the building, along with connecting the plinth level with the surrounding landscape. This monumental bridge is what drove the design of the high rise. This studio was centered around the material study of steel and prefabrication in order to maximize efficiency and main-tain a sustainable building. The structure in the building and the bridge are quite interest-ing together, they are two different systems but yet are inter-connected to create an integral design. The building is based upon a rigid framed steel structure, and within that frame the floor plates and the curtin walls are hung. The hanging

The eastern face to the high rise is bordering Lake Michigan, and the facade in this direction caters to the endless view. The four story glass wall is structured by a cable net tension system. This system allows a seamless view of the lake in the large gathering space of the building. This feature allows for a memorable experience within the building.

“Buildings are artificial constructions. They consist of single parts which must be joined together. To a large degree, the quality of the finished ob-ject is determined by the quality of the joins.”

Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture, pg. 14

The exhibition portion of the build-ings program engages multiple levels of the site, creating a con-trolled window to the lake. The visual connection emphasizes the north south route, while marking on a grand scale the presence of the lake.

This building takes a different approach to education, not at all like the average institu-tion. Children need a fun memorable environ-ment that will enhance their education, and enable a hands on approach to learning. Experience… As a person would approach this building they will be drawn into the procession. Walk-ing through the entrance, seeing the ramp, but not seeing where it goes, curiosity about the final destination. Then suddenly they approach the main green covered court yard, an atmosphere where kids can play and run freely. As your eye follows the ramps up, you are introduced to the destination points; not just one destina-tion but a series of islands up in the air that the ramps can take you to. You are intro-duced to the green roof above the gym, but can’t get to it from the courtyard. You must travel on the ramps to reach this destination, which makes each island special. The expe-rience of not having every part of the building assessable to you right away, it’s about the journey, traveling through the building to these destinations.

Details…Approaching the building from the main entrance one would notice a modern geometric front, more serious in atmo-sphere. Traveling to the core the architecture becomes more and more abstract then almost exploding in the core of the building. This is where the details of the building transform the spaces in to a fun more playful atmosphere. As for the facade of this building it is to feel modern yet warm because of the materials, the faced is composed of poly carbonate. The poly carbonate allows for a inner glow throughout the building. It also allows for light to filter through, but is somewhat opaque creating a distraction free learning environment. This material allows the steel framed structure to be visible from the outside and fully exposed it on the interior of these spaces.

Escaping content…The site of this school is a wooded park, throughout the interior there is a connection to the outdoors. The forest of the site is incorporated throughout each node in the building. This give enhances the freeing feeling throughout, allowing for the institu-tion to not feel as if it is in fact a typical institution. For instance each classroom has direct access to an outdoor terrace, these ter-races allow for a hands on approach to learning, yet in a controlled safe environment. The essence of the nature is encroaching on the architecture, incorporates through-out, a seamless transition.

Study Abroad Montage Winter term Paris/London study abroad. Dec 2012Coordinator: Gil Snyder. RA and Bob Greenstreet. Ph.D., R.I.B.A. Dip.Arch (Oxford). F.R.S.A.

Just a memory of past travels. Documenta-tion of the essence of what it felt like to walk trough spaces in Paris. Emerged within the culture and history of the built environment. To study architecture from a book is one thing, it is another thing to physically trav-el to a building or a place and be able to experience it in person. Traveling can be the most monumental education a student can receive, it is through those experiences from traveling that I draw inspiration.

This drawing was created from a combination of photography, hand drawing, and watercol-or painting.
