Design and renovation for a series of existing showrooms for a chil-dren’s clothing company, on behalf of Ovadia Design Group.

Each space is an area for both storage and display of clothes, where commercial buyers come to meet with the in-house sales representa-tives. Each space houses a different brand, although some house more than one, so each space needed to have its own style to present an ap-propriate backdrop for the clothing it would be meant to house. I was a Design Architect on this project and worked in conjunction with the Lead Designer and Interior Designer to design and detail each space. This project is currently under construction.

The site was sparsely developed and industrial; the directive was devel-opment with the purpose of reinvigorating the surrounding community. Group urban design competition.

The concept of the proposal is to regard the site not as a business district with integrated park and plaza, but instead to regard it in its entirety as a public park with integrated business and residential com-ponents. The site was to tie into Boston's existing park system, its "Emer-ald Necklace", designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, while the design attitude was to contrast.

We used the metaphor of Jell-O; a colorful and highly artificial product with unique properties, with a fun, kitschy image, and a reputation as both a children's treat and healthy anytime snack. We proposed letting go of a desire to create the appearance of a "natural" landscape and instead to adopt an attitude toward the site as so much unmolded, un-dyed Jell-O, ready to be flavored, colored, and manipulated into an honestly artificial landscape.

SPA AT PLEASANT HILL

Design for a spa on former Shaker land exploring the idea of ritual purification through group and individual isolation to achieve spiritual cleansing. School project.

The Shakers were a religious group (similar to the Quakers) known for their ideals of gender equality, familial and proprietal communalism, absolute celibacy, and a religious persuit of perfection that resulted in furniture and architecture beautiful in its thoughtfully crafted austerity.

This two-part design project began with a charrette focusing on the design of a detached privvy to service an existing bed and breakfast on the site. I located the privvy roughly 50 feet from the existing inn, creating a definitive sense of the privvy as a destination wholly sepa-rate from the inn.

The privvy design evokes the ritual nature of bathing, and the process of moving through space from the outside world into the most private recess of the structure, where the occupant is greeted with an eye-level view of the rolling fields beyond.

The spa design expands on idea of the ritual of moving through space. Guests at the spa are taken first through an admissions/guesthouse area, proceeding through to the “wet” area where there is a pool and individual bath houses; then into the community/recreation area, and finally into individual meditation chambers. The entire experience is tinged with both a conciousness of and a separation from the outside world.

CATIMINI CLOTHING

Preliminary design sketches for a mall franchise store for Catimini, a Spanish children’s clothing brand, based on the chain’s established prototype. On behalf of AZSK Architecture, Inc.

The site was a tiny space in a shopping mall in Aventura, Florida. My task was to adapt the established design to the particular conditions. The prototype storefront was not well suited to the space, so I designed another option. Maximizing the asset we had in a strongly branded interior, I created a transparent storefront with the Catimini logo super-imposed at the eye level of a 10-12 year old child in front of the display areas. The window displays each consist of a freestanding podium with ceiling mounted hanging backbanner, which allows for easy seasonal customization. Storefront signage is stainless steel letter-ing affixed to the ceiling soffit front, behind the glass. The goal was to enhance the prototype design while adapting to our space and design restrictions.

CAFE BOULE

A schematic design/rendering for a proposed bakery/cafe, Cafe Boule is on the ground floor of the Newport Towers in Jersey City, New Jersey. On behalf of AZSK Architects, Inc.

The Towers house office space, and are connected to a mall as well as near a commuter rail station. The main patronage of the bakery would be tenants and visitors to the Towers. Cafe Boule would mainly carry baked goods and serve coffee, but would also offer a limited selected of sandwiches, salads, and beverages to offer the lunchtime crowd - basically a version of the classic midtown deli; however the client asked that it evoke instead the feeling of a bakery to appeal to a modern, professional crowd.

All renderings were done in Google Sketchup, using Kerkythea for rendering and Photoshop for additional stylizing.
