Work Placement

Hello, welcome to my presentation on work placement

1

The OpportunityWork with a local music magazine called Nightshift

Nightshift specialises in reviewing local gigs and demo CDS in the Oxford and Reading area

I had the opportunity to work with two different local companies. The first placement was at a local magazine company called Nightshift in the Oxford area. I was given this chance by a neighbour who works for this company. I have always had an interest in magazines and was grateful I was given the chance to experience how a magazine is put together. The second placement was for Sound Radio, a local radio station in Winchester who had the opportunity to broadcast throughout Christmas to gain local interest in the station. I was really pleased to be given this opportunity as it seemed like an exciting experience.

My TasksExperienced the editing side of magazines Reviewed demo CDS from local bandsHad the opportunity to attend a gig with a reviewer Given the chance to promote the magazine in surrounding areas

Nightshift specialises in local gigs and bands in the Oxford and Reading area. I was able to experience how the writing, editing, publishing, advertising and promoting works for a magazine. I was taught the different roles in the production of a magazine; I experienced most of the production with the editorial team. The person I worked closely with was an editor; he works with the small team who decide collectively what gigs and demo cds from the local bands they should review. I was given a number of demo cds to listen to and review myself, and I was really pleased when some of my comments were used in the actual article. However the highlight was when I actually went out and attended a gig with a reviewer. We went to a local gig venue, the o2 academy (formerly known as the Zodiac) which also happened to be a local venue I went to numerous times as a teenager. It was a great evening and afterwards I was asked to write up my thoughts and opinions of the gig, it was interesting that my take on the evening was completely different from the reviewers!

The TeamDue to being a local non-profitable magazine, the team is relatively smallWork closely togetherCommunication and teamwork is essentialFriendly

The team that create the magazine is relatively small; because of this it means everyone has to work very closely together as a team, and make sure everyone knows exactly what they are doing. Communication is essential so everyone knows what they are doing and when they need to do it by. They are also a very friendly team and I enjoyed every minute I spent with them.

The Opportunity To work with local radio station Sound RadioBroadcasting during the Christmas period to gain local interest

The other opportunity I had was to work for Sound Radio which is a local radio show in the Winchester area. They were doing a special Christmas broadcast to gain local interest. Unfortunately I wasnt able to do much work for Sound Radio due being given a last minute opportunity to work for Nightshift opportunity which I didnt want to turn down due to my interest in music and magazines.

TasksTo research local gigs

The Team

Group of dedicated, friendly peopleTeam work essentialHardworking

The task I was given to do at Sound Radio was to find local upcoming gigs in the Winchester area. I jumped at this task because I feel I have good knowledge on the local music. The list was then broadcast on the radio to inform people of these gigs. The team were also a group of dedicated, hard working people. They have all dedicated the majority of their time to make sure this Christmas broadcast goes as well as possible. They are also very friendly. Team work was essential to make sure everyone knows exactly what was happening and when.

Self ReflectionGreat experience working with local companiesDedication is a big part for these teams, people have to work flexible hoursHard work is paid off through self accomplishment and enjoymentCommunication is a big part of the success

It was a great experience to work with local companies. The hard work that these people put in to their jobs is paid off through self accomplishment in getting the task done, therefore dedication is an essential element of teamwork. Good communication is also essential as people need to know what they should be doing and when. All of the people I worked with really enjoyed their work which I think is really important.

Skills I GainedConfidence Working as a teamWorking to a deadlineDedication and enjoyment of work

The skills I gained include gaining the confidence to get involved with a team. I also learnt how working as a member of a team is a skill that is needed in many situations and working to a deadline is essential. Dedication to and enjoyment of your work is also really important.

Exit StrategyTake the skills I learnt and use in future employmentGet involved in more local companies in future months

My exit strategy is to take these skills that I learnt from both work placements and to use them in future employment. I believe they are essential skills to have and to use. I also intend to get more involved with local companies in the future as it is good experience to have and it is enjoyable and challenging to work with them. Thanks for listening
