MODULE 10-WORK EQUIPMENT, MACHINERY AND TOOLS

SAFE COMPANY

Page 2: Work Equipment,Machinery and Tools Safety

POWERED TOOLS AND MACHINERY

A machine operator is exposed to risks!

General preventive measures: Training and have sufficient experience Not wearing loose-fitting clothes or jewelry and long hair Necessary PPE Floor clean, smooth and dry Freedom of movement around the machine Adequate lighting Machines checked regularly. Maintenance activities: machine shut

down (See slides 12 and 13)

SIMPLE HAND TOOLSTypes of simple hand tools:• Powered by human strength alone

• Causes: improper use and bad maintenance

• Risks: cuts, bruises, grazes and dislocations of the hand and wrist

• Preventive measures: good maintenance and cleaning, not using damaged tools (daily pre-use check) and only using the tools for their intended purpose, adequate PPE if necessary

• Hammer, spanner, file, chisel, screwdriver, pliers: special preventive measures

BLIND FLANGES

Concept: round metal plate that´s inserted between the flange connection of the pipeline.

Preventive measures: seals off the pipeline. Always adhere to the instructions and procedures imposed by the owner of the installation.

FIXED MACHINES Risks; rotating cutting tools, flying dust, high noise levels,

inadvertent start-up of the machine.

Operator training (some countries 18 years old)

Preventive measures: red emergency button, sufficient freedom of movement to bring in and remove the work pieces.

Never do interventions with the hands on a running machine. No hands to remove sawdust and wood shavings.

Wear close-fitting clothes and avoid jewelry.

POWERED AND ELECTRICAL HAND TOOLS

Powered hand tools are well designed and adapted to the nature of the work, properly maintained and safely stored.

• Portable hand tools must always be equipped with a dead man´s switch.

• Electrical hand tools: inspected frequently and well-maintained. Safe operating voltage. If possible: double insulation (do not earth).

• Cables must not traverse gangways or scaffolds. Do not exceed the maximum capacity of reels. Only explosion-proof tools in spaces with risks of explosion.

PNEUMATIC HAND TOOLS

Inspected frequently and well-maintained

Equipped with a dead man´s switch

Wear the necessary PPE

Take frequent breaks from operations involving strong vibrations.

Cut off the air supply to the equipment.

DRILLS Properly clamped

The drill spindle must be covered as far as possible and the protection must NEVER be removed

Never change the setting of the drill while it´s still running

Shavings must be removed with a brush

Do not wear gloves and wear close-fitting clothes. Wear a hairnet to keep from getting caught. Wear safety glasses

Page 9: Work Equipment,Machinery and Tools Safety

GRINDERS Only properly trained personnel

The grinding wheel: sufficiently round and not be clogged

Grinding wheel and wheel guard: properly mounted

Cover the sides of the machine

Remove all flammable materials near the work area (fire extinguisher handy)

Use the spark arrestors to protect yourself against sparks. Wear safety goggles and ear protection

Page 10: Work Equipment,Machinery and Tools Safety

PORTABLE GRINDERS Equipped with a dead man´s switch and a side handle and the

grinding wheel must be protected by a wheel guard.

Never exceed the maximum number of revolutions of the disc

Do not put the portable grinder down until it has been switched off and the disc has come to a complete stop

Clamp the work piece

ALWAYS wear ear protection and safety goggles

Page 11: Work Equipment,Machinery and Tools Safety

CIRCULAR SAW Operators: at least 18 years of age and trained

Large pieces: a second person or a roller conveyor

Well adjusted guide rail and a push stick to move small or narrow pieces.

Good dust extraction

Never wear loose clothing or jewelry. Tie back long hair.

ISOLATION PROCESS Steps concerning isolation:• Notify the personnel involves

• Identify energy sources

• Use the normal controls.

• Isolate the equipment

• Install signs, labels or lockout devices (national legislation)

• Check for hidden energy

• Test all parts of the machine.

RESTART PROCESS

Steps when restarting process:• Remove rubbish, tools and spares

• Remove all personnel from the work area

• Inform affected personnel about restarting

• Remove signs, locks and tags
