WELCOME TO WORDPLAYWelcome to Wordplay 2013, Shetland’s 12th annual book festival. This year we have events running from Thursday 29th August until Sunday 8th September. We have a blend of workshops, readings and talks about poetry, novels, political diaries, song writing, story-telling, maps (courtesy of The National Library of Scotland) and visual art. As ever, every session is a highlight and we are delighted to be able to introduce among others, Mark Ellen, David Hepworth, Chris Mullin, David Knopfler and Andrew Greig. There is also a strong contingent of Shetland residents including Laureen Johnston, Sheenagh Pugh and Jen Hadfield. And we have three book launches as well as a book signing event featuring local writers. Enjoy!

Shetland resident and celebrated poet Sheenagh Pugh makes her first appearance at Wordplay to read from her work, including her latest collection, Long-Haul Travellers (Seren 2008) and her forthcoming collection, Short Days, Long Shadows, also to be published by Seren.She will be joined by David Harsent, who has published ten books of poetry, won the Griffin International Poetry Prize and been shortlisted for the Forward Prize, the TS Eliot Prize and the Costa Prize.

ELSEWHERES - THE POETRY OF THE MAPTOM POW � POETRY READING �

Tom Pow has always written about Elsewheres in his poetry and in his travel books – most recently In Another World: Among Europe’s Dying Villages. The NLS Bartholomew’s Residency allowed him to explore his love of maps as artefacts and as invitations to the imagination. In this reading, he will share poems about the map of Treasure Island, for example, and about the 1983 Soviet Map of Edinburgh, as well as earlier encounters with place.

NATIONAL LIBRARY OF SCOTLAND BARTHOLOMEW RESIDENCIES From February to May 2013, writer Tom Pow and Shetland-based artist Diane Garrick took part in a creative residency at the National Library of Scotland. Working with the Library’s extensive map collections, and specifically with the Bartholomew Archive, Tom and Diane created new works inspired by maps and mapping. As part of Word Play 2013, Tom and Diane will share their enthusiasm for maps at two events supported by the National Library of Scotland.

ART WALK TO ART MAPDIANE GARRICK� WORKSHOP �

Artist Diane Garrick will lead this all day workshop which will include the following: A short powerpoint to introduce the current contemporary practices of ’maps in art’, followed by a morning walk in and around Lerwick. This will focus on a multi-sensory engagement with the environment allowing participants to gather ideas, images or materials from the landscape to inspire the afternoon session - creating art work that integrates two or more senses in a two or three dimensional form.

FOUND AT SEA ANDREW GREIG � POETRY READING �

A spoken word poetry performance, focussing on Andrew’s latest book Found At Sea. Based on an open dinghy trip he made from Stromness to overnight on the abandoned island of Cava, this micro-Odyssey is about sailing, friendship, fear, living through physical engagement - and the story of two remarkable women who lived alone on Cava for twenty seven years. There may also be some banjo playing and probably a shanty.Found At Sea includes cover and illustrative panels by Mike McDonnell, sailor and shantyman of Yell. The original panels (and many more) are exhibited at Shetland Museum from August 15th to September 6th.

Join Nat Hall for the launch of From Shore to Shoormal/D’un rivage a l’autre, her collaboration with New Brunswick poet, Donna Allard. The session will feature readings by Nat, Joe Blades (kindly funded by artsnb), himself from New Brunswick, Marsali Taylor and Christian Tait. There will also be music by Steve Davidson and Alan McKay.

Laureen Johnston from Voe has published: local history book Inside the Postcard (2001); short novel Shetland Black (2002); poetry pamphlet Treeds (2007, reprinted 2010) and in March appeared at StAnza, Scotland’s international poetry festival. James Sinclair, from Lerwick published a pamphlet of poems, Gulf Stream Blues, in 2007. He is on the editorial committee of the New Shetlander and has regularly given readings around Shetland and at Word festival in Aberdeen.Come and hear these two fine poets perform their work.

David Hepworth and Mark Ellen have been broadcasting about, writing about and listening to music for most of the last forty years. In that time they have been presenters in the BBC’s Whistle Test, anchors of the TV presentation of Live Aid, editors of magazines such as Smash Hits, Mojo and Q and interviewers of everyone from Bob Dylan through Bananarama to Rihanna.In “The Entire History Of Rock and Roll In 60 Minutes” they set out to tell the entire story of music via pictures, headlines, funny stories, juicy details you didn’t know already and the odd serious bit.It will be followed by a Q&A during which they’ll probably make indiscreet comments about internationally famous rock stars.

Steve Bell has been drawing comic strips for a living since 1977. His ‘If…’ strip in the Guardian has passed its 7000th episode. Since 1990 he has drawn four political cartoons a week. The celebrated political cartoonist takes a little time out of his busy work schedule in order to give a talk about his work, illustrated by his work.
