Thursday, November 23rd! FOR WHOM: Our church members and our community neighbors…here’s an op-portunity to gather with others to enjoy a fine holiday meal together…no one needs to be alone on Thanksgiving Day! We will serve dine-in guests in the Fellowship Hall at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 23rd, plus deliver meals to Rogers Police and Fire Departments, the Juvenile Detention Center, Meals on Wheels clients, and
our homebound members, and provide take-out meals for pick-up.
RESERVATIONS, PLEASE! Call the church at 479-631-7997 by Monday, Nov. 20th
to reserve your seat or arrange a delivery...we want to be prepared for you!
HOW YOU CAN HELP: And, we DO need help! This is no small effort, and even if you will be out of town, or at home celebrating with your own family on Thanksgiving Day, there are still opportunities to help ahead of time. The sign-up sheets are up…go check the hallway bulletin board and find a place to sign up to support this mis-sion! We need “worker bees” for prep on both the Tuesday and Wednesday before the big day, and then several workers on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, throughout the morning as well as during the dinner itself.…you can pick a shift, and won’t have to organize/lead anything unless you want to. Many hands make light work!
Can you:
Bake a pie? Deliver meals? Fill salt and pepper shakers?
Chop onions? Donate a turkey? Assemble “to-go” boxes?
Set a table? Arrange decorations? Work the serving line?
Carve a turkey? Be a greeter? Contribute financially?
Iron tablecloths? Wash dishes? Clean up afterwards?
BE A DISCIPLE: Join us for camaraderie in mission as we bring our collective tal-ents together in this effort. Giving back is OUR thanks and gratitude to God for God’s many blessings, and we can become the “hands and feet” of Jesus as we
bring His inclusive spirit to our neighbors!

DINNER
Prepare the Way of the Lord
Continuing my column in First Word’s first of the month
issue, we will look briefly at a new piece of music for our
liturgical use. Sunday, December 3 is the church New Year,
the First Sunday of Advent. As our Call to Prayer we will
sing another wonderful song from the Taizé community,
“Prepare the Way of the Lord.” Written by Jacques Berthi-
er, a composer of much of the music found at Taizé, it is a
simple 8 measure tune, crafted as a round.
The Taizé Community is an ecumenical group named for
the town it resides, Taizé, France. Founded in 1940 by
Brother Schütz, hundreds of pilgrims travel to Taizé each
year to experience a life of prayer and worship in simple
surroundings. During World War II, it helped refugees, so
much so that the Gestapo threatened Brother Roger, who
fled to Switzerland until the end of the war. The Taizé
songs are sung in worship by crowds from dozens of coun-
tries, speaking many languages, and are particularly attrac-
tive to travelers under the age of 30.
To hear an example of “Prepare the Way of the Lord,” click
here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io252KZJnHY
It is sung as a unison congregational tune and also as a
round.

When someone asks who you are, usually the response is
your name. Perhaps you include your relationship; “I’m
Sandi Wanasek, Amy Fourt and Daniel Lawson’s mom” or
you mention a work relationship “I’m Sandi Wanasek, on
staff at First United Methodist Church”. We give the in-
quirer some kind of frame of reference, a way to visualize
us in their mind’s eye.
Once we enter into a closer relationship, our friends will
learn more about us....perhaps that we have a strong will,
or that we struggle with loneliness or depression. Perhaps
they’ll notice a genetic predisposition to being an introvert
or extrovert. They discover, over time, who we really are.
Who would you say First Church is? Is she a leader of so-
cial action causes or perhaps a chaplain for those who are
sad or struggling? Would you say that she’s a Stephen
Ministry church and know how to explain what that
means? Would you say, “That’s the church where I go for
Thanksgiving dinner every year. Want to come?” Or per-
haps, would you say she’s a mission station, nurturing and
equipping folks to enter the world with the love of Jesus?
It’s an interesting process, exploring and discovering who
we are. Hopefully, over these past 20+ years in this place,
the discovering has been an on-going process and when
service to others presents itself, we answer the call because
that’s WHO we are!
Shalom,
ALL SAINTS SUNDAY

All Saints Sunday and loved ones that have gone before

passed this past year.

Drive/Spirit week during November 13-17!
A BIG THANK YOU in to the church staff and Cyndie
Jacks for all of the hard work creating a fun pumpkin patch
for the MDO children! Be sure to stop by and check out the
MDO bulletin board to see photos of all the little ones!
Wow! What a busy time we have had ....
Eating Oreo spiders, painting pumpkins, making friendship
bracelets, filling the Little Free Pantry, and being silly with
playdoh! What fun!
Have a Blessed Day!

One of the advantages offered by our pictorial directory
provider is the potential for a download on your cell
phone. If this sounds like Greek to you, Kevin Lancas-
ter, Clint Hopper, and Diana Kolman will be available be-
tween worship services on Nov. 12 and 19 to help you get
that done!

We hope that you have been reading our articles over the
last couple of months...and that you understand this won-
derful cooperative effort of our area Methodist church-
es! If you have any questions about this mission, please
feel free to stop us in the hallways! Those who have
attended these joint meetings include Pastor Michael
Mattox, Judy Mattox, Diana Kolman, Marie Green, Karl
Gaarsoe, Jenny Harmon, and Harriet Mack.
The Micah 6:8 group is making positive steps toward a
project that will be one step in addressing the homeless in
our area. We will be presenting a plan to church leader-
ship after January 1 for their approval. Then, we will be
able to share the good news with you and look forward to
your support!
You will remember that a short-term project that we start-
ed was in food recovery. Volunteers from all of our
churches collected excess produce from the Downtown
Rogers Farmers Market throughout the season and deliv-
ered it to the Grace Community Meal and Pantry...as well
as other organizations. We did this with the guidance and
support of Seeds That Feed in Fayetteville. Their mission
is to cut down on food waste and to get healthy produce
to those who need it. Today we learned that we collected
and distributed 13,330 pounds of food in Rogers over the
season! It is a great start...and we will continue this pro-
ject next year as well as consider expanding those efforts!

GIVING MADE EASY...
What if you bought a cup of coffee for $3.65 and the remainder of the dollar, 35 cents, was automatically given as an offering to FUMC? And it is tax deductible! You won’t miss it, but it can
make a big impact for the church once added up.
FUMC has partnered with DonateYourChange.com, which is a
secure fundraising application to donate your change.
Sign up all your Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and Checking Accounts to donate your change on each. The Young Adult group will help anyone sign up between services on Sunday,
November 5th.

Dear FUMC,
Thanks SO much for your recent donation to Tillery’s
music department. We appreciate your generosity and
community spirit—it makes such a positive impact for
our students. I was so excited to be able to purchase
new and relevant curriculum!
Tillery Loves you!

On Oct. 21 our Middle Schoolers went to the Ozark Corn
Maze for a day of fun! We survived the corn maze,
played with the pumpkin launcher, and had a short de-
votional on Ecclesiastes 4:12 and the importance on hav-
ing solid people who have your back in your faith walk.
A huge thank you to Whitney Mann, Rhonda Adams,
and Clint and Jamei Hopper for chaperoning and mak-
ing it a great day. THANK YOU! B Edwards, Director of Student Ministries ~ Joshua 1:9
Oct. 20 our high schoolers went to Springdale to partici-
pate in NWA Miracle League. Miracle League is co-ed
little league baseball for children with developmental
and physical disabilities. This is a great program and re-
source for families in Northwest Arkansas; each player is
paired with a "buddy" who stays with them during the
game helping make the experience as fun as possible. We
are so proud and thankful for these high schoolers who
made being a Miracle League buddy a priority on a Fri-
day Night.
Sunday, Oct. 22 was our annual small group
pumpkin carving contest! We split up into
our groups of High School Girls, High School
Boys, Middle School Girls, and Middle School
Boys; and let them go to town on 2 pumpkins
creating a design they think best represents
their group. The winning team got to choose
our Turkey Bowl team color. A big congratu-
lations to our High School Girls – looks like
we'll be turning teal this Turkey Bowl.

Abundant Health BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT
The Importance of a Smile By Dr. Bob Matlock
Why should you visit a dentist? The primary reason is that
it’s a preventive measure. Don’t wait until you have a
toothache! Preventive treatment is much more pleasant
and much less costly than treating the ache.
My favorite reason for one to visit the dentist is to have
one’s teeth cleaned. At this appointment, not only is your
smile brightened, but any dental problems that one might
be unaware of can be caught and a major problem pre-
vented.
Your smile is so important. A smile showing a pretty set of
teeth produces a positive reaction with others. Suppose
you are hungry and you pull into a drive-in restaurant.
After placing your order, you drive ahead to pay and then
receive your order. All is well until the person handing
you your order smiles. Unfortunately, this person exhibits
a mouth full of bad teeth. Did you just lose your appetite?
This is just an example of a negative reaction to an un-
pleasant smile.
Another reason to visit the dentist is to get a new tooth-
brush. How one can ever choose which toothbrush to pur-
chase at the oral hygiene area of a pharmacy or grocery is
beyond me. Too many choices. Just remember that all
toothbrushes work if used properly.
Some years ago, a friend told me of a sign that was around
the mirror above her children’s bathroom sink. It said,
“You are not properly dressed until you are wearing a
smile.”
Are you properly dressed?

The Pantry LET’S
Brrr! The weather is changing...so let's keep hearty soups
on our grocery lists for the Little Free Pantry! Thanks to all
of those who have responded....we see your soups...even
though they disappear from the shelves so quickly!
Here are a few updates:
We continue to work with the NWA Food Bank to se-
cure some additional foods for our LFP. You may
have noticed loaves of bread...and even some bananas!
We are exploring ways to purchase some healthy pro-
tein foods to supplement the wonderful foods that you
bring to the LFP. Do you notice the Tyson's canned
chicken in the pantry? Remember that this chicken
was a gift from our friends at Tyson's. You would
have to be really fast to see the cans of chick-
en...because they are always the first to go out of the
pantry! Protein products are expensive and difficult
for some families to afford. We are glad that we can
help provide that in a small way.
We have been contacted by our LFP friends and folks
from Seattle's Municipal Channel about a feature story
they are producing. It is possible that some photos
from our LFP will be included! We will let you know
if we are featured and when it might be available for
viewing.
Remember that you can always Pump Up the Pantry by
making cash donations to FUMC with a notation for the
LFP! Those funds help us purchase foods to help 'fill the
gaps'!
Stop by the church office to pick up some peach jelly and
apple butter. Pints are $5 each, make great gifts, and every
penny of the proceeds go back to our church and communi-
ty to do good!
FALL YARD CLEAN UP—Nov. 18 / 8:30 am
Coffee & Donuts provided!
Another big, big, BIG thank you to Boomerang Joy led by
Marie Greene and Diana Kolman for feeding the Cross-
roads teachers during parent-teacher conferences last
week! You ladies are amazing!
And thank you to all who contributed to Crossroads
snacks. You helped the social worker go from digging a
pop tart out of the bottom of her purse...to a fully stocked
shelf! Marie also led that effort. She will need a super-size
wagon in heaven to lug around all those gold stars she has
earned!
I am certainly mightily blessed to be part of such a loving
church!
Much love,
