AtSKFAI,wewanttomakeAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalyticsanditsbenefitstoprocessaccessibletoallmanufacturers,nomatterhowmanydatascientiststheyhaveonstaff.Tothatend,ourSKFEnlightAImaintenance4.0solutionisbuiltonAutomatedMachineLearning(AutoML).FreddyHernandez,DirectorConnectedTechnologiesatSKFexplains.
Unscheduleddowntimeimpactsmanufacturersofallsizesacrosseveryindustry.Thoughtherearedifferentestimationsofhowunscheduleddowntimeaffectsproductiononayearlybasis,theInternationalSocietyofAutomationestimatesthatfactorieslosebetween5-20%ofoverallannualproductiontimeduetotheseunforeseensetbacks.
Theactualcostofunscheduleddowntimeismuchgreaterthantheminutesorhoursamachineisunabletoproduceitsallottedquota.Amongtheinvisibleexpensesthatmanufacturersabsorbarelaborandovertimeforplantworkersandtechnicians,costsassociatedwiththeorderingofnewmachinepartsandthetransportationofthisequipment,anddamagedproductionoutputfrommachinesthatmanufacturelowerqualitymaterialsbeforebreakingdown.
AsfactoryownersincreasinglylooktoBigData,ArtificialIntelligenceandMachineLearningtorevolutionizeprocessesandefficiencyontheplantfloor,oneIndustrialIoT(IIoT)technologythathasbeenheraldedasapioneeringmaintenancesolutionisAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalytics.
ManyfactoryassetsarealreadyfittedwithsensorsthatcaptureBigData,suchasvibrationsandtemperature,tomonitortheirwellbeinginreal-time.AI-DrivenIndustrialAnalyticsharnessthisdatatobuildcomplexMachineLearningmodelsthatcananticipatemachinedowntime.Theadvancewarningempowerstechniciansto
schedulemaintenance,orderparts,andminimizethelaborandoutputlossesthatunscheduleddowntimenecessarilyentails.
ThepromiseofAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalytics–increaseduptime,reducedO&Mcosts–hasthepotentialtobeamanufacturinggamechanger.Nevertheless,accordingtoa2018McKinseyreport,only30%ofallIIoTpilotsaresuccessfullyscaledacrosstheentireorganization.InthecaseofAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalytics,twoformidableobstaclesstandinginthewayofadoptionaretheglobalshortageindatascientistsandadifficultyinscalinganysolutionacrossnotonebutdozensorevenhundredsoffactories.
MachineLearningisadifficultsciencethatrequiresahighlevelofdisciplineexpertise,andmanyAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalyticssolutionsrequireateamofdatascientiststokeepthesystemrunningsmoothly.Ineachstepoftheprocess,datascientistsareresponsibleforconfiguringtheMachineLearning'smodels.Thereisnopreprogrammedguidebookfortheselabor-intensivedecisionsregardingaspectssuchasmodelselectionandconfigurationorhyperparameteroptimization.
AtSKFAI,wewanttomakeAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalyticsanditsbenefitstoprocessaccessibletoallmanufacturers,nomatterhowmanydatascientiststheyhaveonstaff.Tothatend,ourEnlightAImaintenance4.0solutionisbuiltonAutomatedMachineLearning(AutoML).
Asitsnamesuggests,AutoMLautomatesaspectsofMachineLearningbyhavingalgorithms,notdatascientists,makemodelselection,validationandotherconfigurationswhichwerepreviouslyperformedbyhumandatascientists.
Automated Machine Learning is the Rising Star of AI-Driven Industrial Analytics
12 13
Thisapproachenablesustoreducemanyoftherepetitivetasksperformedbydatascientists,improvetheperformanceandaccuracyoftheMachineLearningmodels,andempowernon-datascientiststomakeuseoftheinsightsgenerated.UsingCorrelativePatternRecognition,algorithmsanalyzealltheanomalousdatatofindbroaderhiddenpatterns.Onceadeviationisdetected,thesystemsendsoutanalerttoplanttechnicians,whoarethenabletoscheduleaplanneddowntime,orderpartsandbookrepairs–allinadvance.
Techniciansusingoursolutiondon'tneedtobecome“citizendatascientists”toreapofthebenefitsofMachineLearninginsights.Instead,anintuitiveuserinterfaceprovidesinformationontheimpendingmachinebreakdownandempowerstechnicianstorespondinrealtimeusingtheirexistingskillsets.
EversmarterAIisempoweringustoofferadigitaltransformationproductthatcombinesadvancedMachineLearninganalysiswithexpertknowledge.
OnebenefitofthishybridrelationshipbetweenexpertsandAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalyticsisitsimpactonwrenchtime.Wrenchtimeisthetimethatmaintenanceworkersareactivelyengagedonthejobwith“tool-in-hand.”Asubstantialamountofwrenchtimeismadeupofwaiting:waitingtoarriveattheinoperativemachine,waitingforparts,waitingforadditionalbackup.EnlightAIsignificantlyreducesthewaittimebyprovidingin-depthinsightsintotwocoremaintenanceissues,RootCauseAnalysisandTime-to-Failure.
Thoughmaintenanceandreliabilitypersonnelmaybeskilledatrepairingmachines,theyaren'talwayscapableofdiagnosingwhyamachinehasfaltered.InautomatedAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalyticssolutions,thealgorithmdiscernsdeviantsensorbehaviorsorcorrelationsofthesebehaviors.IdentifyingtheabnormalsensoractivityprovidesinsightintotheRootCauseAnalysis.
Tracingthebreakdowntothebehaviorofaspecificsensorinapieceofequipmenthelpsidentifythepreciserepairactivitythatisrequiredforremediation.Fromthetechnician'sperspective,lesstimeiswastedonguessworkandtesting,themachinecanberepairedmorequickly,andthetechniciancanreturntohisorherscheduledtasksfaster.
UsingBigDataforAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalyticsalsoprovidesearlierindicationsofdeteriorationorimpendingassetfailure.ByidentifyingTime-to-Failureinadvance,non-wrenchtimeactivitiescan
bereducedoreliminatedbecauseofupfrontplanning.Ratherthanwaitingforpartsorextrasupporttoarrive,repairworkers'timecanbeallocatedtootherroutinemaintenancetasks.Whentechnicianscanfollowasetschedule,insteadofbeingrandomlypagedtomalfunctioningmachines,theneedforovertimecanbesignificantlyreduced.
AsmanufacturerspondertheconceptoftheSmartFactoryandwhatthatmightmeanforthem,SKFispioneeringatangiblesolutionforthehereandnow.
MaintenancecontinuestodominateIndustry4.0conversations,andourexpansionintothemaintenanceservicessectoraimstoprovidenewvaluetoourcustomers.Inatimeinwhichhacking,anddatabreacheshavedominatedthenews,we'reusingsecureandencodedchannelstostreammanufacturers'datatoourcloud.Whileitmayhavebeenanon-issueadecadeago,dataownershiphasbecomeapressingissueinitsownright.
Maintenance4.0isacriticalcomponentofamanufacturer'sdigitizationjourney,andtheintroductionofAI-DrivenIndustrialAnalyticswithinthefactoryhasthepotentialtosignificantlyimprovetheemployeeexperience,machinelongevity,productionqualityandoutput,revenueandsavings.EnlightAIprovidesacustomizablemaintenancesolutionforincreaseduptimeandreducedoperationalcosts.Welookforwardtohelpingmanufacturersimplementthispredictivecompanioninandacrossfactories.

Boltedassemblyfailuresduetoincorrecttighteningcanbecomeathingofthepast,thankstoHYDROCAMhydraulicallyoperatedbolttensioners
HYDROCAMhydraulicallyoperatedbolttensionersaredesignedtoofferfargreateraccuracycomparedwithalternativefixingmethods.HYDROCAMremovesuncertaintyovertheperformanceandlong-termreliabilityofcouplings.Italsosavestimeandreduces
risks,withitssuperiorcontrolandsafety.Damagetoboltsandassociatedstructuresisavoided,installationisfaster,operationofequipmentisoptimised,whilemaintenanceneedsareminimised.
Boltedassembliesareusedthroughoutindustrybutcanpresentsignificantchallenges.Forexample,incorrectassemblyaccountsforaround45%ofallfatiguefailures,withcommonproblemsbeinginsufficientpreload,
HYDROCAM hydraulic bolt tensioners remove uncertainty from couplings
20 21
HYDROCAM hydraulically operated bolt tensioners are designed to offer far greater accuracy compared with alternative fixing methods
over-orunder-tighteningandmisalignment.“Conventionalmethodsfortighteningboltsusetorque,appliedbyhandortorquetools,”explainsDamianLewis,GeneralManageratPilgrim,partoftheSKFGroup.“Thesemethodscandamagethreadsandflangefaces,leadingtore-machiningandaddeddowntime.Theboltsmayalsobecomelooseovertimeandneedre-tightening.Analternativeisheatinduction,butthisrequiresspecialistcontractorsandadditionalcost.”
HYDROCAMovercomestheseproblemsbyaxiallystretchingboltsandstuds,usingapre-determinedresidualloadtocreateahighintegrityfixing,whichcanbemountedanddismountedquicklyandsafelywithoutdamage.HYDROCAMcanbesuppliedasasingletoolorincorporatedintoamulti-tensionerforhomogenoustightening;inmostapplicationsitisintendedtobereusedwithmultiplefittingsbutcanalsobepermanentlyincorporatedinto
thenutassembly.
HYDROCAMismanufacturedbyPilgrim,afullyownedSKFcompany,andsuppliedreadyforusewiththetensionerunit,powerpackandallrelevantfittings;thepowerpackcanbehydraulically,electricallyorhandoperated.DamianLewisconcludes,“HYDROCAMensuresconsistent,safeandpreciseboltassemblyandfastening.It'ssimpletouse,eliminatestheriskoferrorsandsavesengineersthroughoutindustryconsiderabletime,effortandcost.”
