On Friday 15 February, over 50 Year 11
students completed their training to
become Woolgoolga High School's SMILE
Mentors for 2019. The students were
enthusiastic and diligent in their training
which covered a range of topics such as
active listening, empathy, child protection,
the protocols of mentoring, event planning
and the history of the SMILE Mentor
Program, an on-going success at WHS
since 2012. The students also had practi-
cal training, facilitating activities with Year
7 classes, putting their new skills into prac-
tice. The SMILE Mentors will be officially
honoured at the school assembly next
week.
SMILE Training
Congratulations to all participants, we look forward
to their positive contributions to student well-being
throughout the year.

Congratulations to Phoenix Risby in Year 8, being the
major prize draw winner from our Woopi Wellbeing
initiative. Students who are recognised for “doing the
right thing” or handing in outstanding homework, by
helping other students or behaving appropriately are
encouraged for this positive behaviour by gaining a
Woopi ticket from our teachers. Each fortnight we
have a Woopi draw and canteen vouchers and other
small prizes are given, but each semester we have a
major draw for a big prize. This semester the prize
was a HP laptop computer, as used by our teachers.
Phoenix is able to use this computer and take it home
until he completes Year 12 or leaves our school.
Congratulations to Kaleb Darbin for becoming the
2019 Lions Youth of the Year and the Lions Public
Speaker of the Year. Thank you to Year Adviser, Mrs
Hansen who supported the Year 12 students in
preparation for this event. An article will be published
in the next edition of this newsletter. Kaleb now repre-
sents the Woolgoolga Lions Club and our school at
the next round to be held in March at Maclean.
Last Thursday and Friday I had the opportunity to
travel to Sydney with Peter O’Neill (relieving Head
Teacher Mathematics). Our Director, Meghanne
Wellard, Head Teachers Mathematics and Principals
from South Grafton, Grafton, Maclean, Casino and
Bonalbo High Schools visited the highest performing
mathematics (growth) schools in Sydney.
From the Principal’s Desk
Congratulations to our 50+ SMILE mentors who were
recognised at our assembly on Monday. Thank you for
helping our younger students.
We visited Prairiewood, Sir Joseph Banks,
Holsworthy and Picnic Point High Schools. These
schools were identified as being similar schools to
Woolgoolga High and are achieving significant growth
in mathematics and numeracy as measured by
NAPLAN and the Higher School Certificate.
My takeaway from the school visits is that, in compar-
ison to these schools, we are doing very well indeed.
Our Academic Achievement Centre is enhancing
learning and our mathematics strategy, led by our
Mathematics faculty is indeed delivering high level
outcomes in our students. Each school we visited
held some significant takeaways that will also
enhance mathematics teaching at our school.
Congratulations to our 50+ SMILE mentors who were
recognised at our assembly on Monday. Thank you
for helping our younger students.
The Department of Education has released “The
School Community Charter” which highlights the
importance of school community and ensuring they
are collaborative, respectful and communicate
effectively. I encourage you to read this charger found
on pages 4-5 of this newsletter.
Until next time

Woopi Major Prize Draw Winner
Phoenix Risby in Year 8 is the lucky winner of the major prize draw for
Semester 2, 2018 drawn at last Monday’s assembly. Phoenix wins a
brand new HP laptop for his entire secondary schooling!
So, do the right thing and get those Woopi tickets in for each fortnightly
and major prize draw.
Congratulations Phoenix!

The WHS Year 7 Sport Program will run each week throughout the year during a
double lesson (periods 3 & 4) each Thursday. All students will experience the equiva-
lent to two periods (2 hours) of sport each week. This is in addition to the student’s
PDHPE lessons and sport is often taught by a different teacher.
Each sport will run for approximately 3 weeks with the aim to provide opportunities for
students to participate and develop their skills across a range of sports (competitive and
non- competitive) in an active and supportive environment with their peers.
Students are required to wear their sport uniform each Thursday. This is different to PE
lessons where sports uniform is changed into and out of, before and after each lesson.
Given that there is a two hour time slot for sport, we are able to use some of the local
community facilities and expert facilitators such as tennis coaching at Woolgoolga
tennis courts, Woolgoolga netball courts, dance instruction with specialist dance
teachers and the Woolgoolga swimming pool.
The annual cost of the Year 7 Sport Program will be $50 for which you will be invoiced
in the near future along with the junior fee contribution. Please pay this sport fee as
soon as possible so your child can make the most of all the opportunities offered.
A permission note with further details has been sent home this week with your child.
Please sign and return this to the PDHPE staffroom ASAP.

It’s a win for Arrawarra!
On Wednesday 6 and 13 February the annual school swimming carnival was held at Woolgoolga
swimming pool. The first day started with war cries chanted by students of each house, with
Mullaway deemed the strongest and loudest to win this event. Students enjoyed the traditional
swimming races of freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke and house relays along with a
variety of novelty events such as mega relays, noodle races, boogie board relays and the inaugu-
ral giant floaties race. Great house spirit was on display for the relays. All of the houses won three
relays each. The teachers swam well in their relays against the students and for the first time in
many years could keep pace with the younger student swimmers, thanks to many of the more
youthful teachers showing off their swimming skills.
Congratulations to all students who participated.
The final house point score for 2019 was the closest in years!
1st
place – Arrawarra – 452 points
2nd

NSW Bus Safety Week – 18 to 24 February
Over 1 million students in NSW travel to & from school each day, many by bus. In the last five years,
three children were tragically killed after alighting form a bus and being struck by another vehicle. NSW
Bus Safety Week runs from 18-24 February 2019 to highlight the importance of bus-related safety issues
for all road users. It is part of the Be Bus Aware campaign which aims to improve awareness for how all
road users can keep safe on & around buses.
Tips for keeping safe around buses:
Adults – always hold your child’s hand when crossing the road. Meet your child at the school or the
bus stop – NEVER wait on the opposite site of the road and call them across. Wait until the bus has
gone then use a safe place to cross the road. Supervise your child walking to & from the bus & cross-
ing the road until they are at least 10.
Drivers – slow down to 40km/h when the bus lights are flashing.
Visit www.BeBusAware.com.au to find out more.
