(I) Title of the Project: Development of keratin based Bio composite films and
Electro spun Nanofibrous mats from wool wastes.
Objectives :
1. To extract keratin and other histological components from wool waste or coarse Indian
wool using different mechano-chemical approaches.
2. To characterize the derived keratin and histological components of wool.
3. To develop keratin based composite films using different polymers.
4. To develop keratin based nano fibres using electro spinning process.
5. To optimize and standardize different parameters involved in electro-spinning process.
6. To test and evaluate different properties of the developed products.
Achievements :
Keratin was obtained by various mechano-chemical processes on coarse Indian wool
and wool waste.
Micronized wool powder was obtained by oscillatory pulverizer ball mill.
Keratin was blended with different synthetic and bio-polymers and solution casted to
form bio-degradable films.
India produces a large amount of extremely coarse and brittle wool which cannot be spun into yarn and hence goes as waste. This coarse wool have diameter in the range of 50-150 microns. Wool with up to 95% keratin by weight is a rich and pure source of intermediate filament proteins (IFPs) which can be used in a wide range of biomaterial applications. As a polymeric polyamide, keratin exhibits a high degree of chemical functionality.
The keratinous extracts produced by chemical means such as sonication in different acids, alkali etc and powder of histological components of wool made by mechanical means such as ball milling. The keratin and micronized wool obtained by different methods were characterized and different synthetic or natural polymers were identified and blended with keratin. Using these Bio-composite films was developed from various blends of polymers and keratin.
While the keratin/polymer blends will be electrospun to develop nano fibrous mats. The developed composites will be tested and evaluated.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018
Achievements :
Synthesis routes using benzophenone based compounds as coupler have been identified. Few existing dyestuffs are identified through literature and are being checked for their UV protection properties
Few Disperse dyes have been synthesized using p-Chloro aniline, p- Nitro aniline and 2,4, Di nitro aniline, 4 Amino Benzonitrile, as a diazonium compound
Synthesized dyes have been purified for NMR Studies. Application and performance evaluation of these dyes are underway
Other Acid and Disperse dyes synthesis is underway.
There has been a progressive increase in the incidence of skin cancers reported in past several
decades. Evidence from various disciplines has implicated ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun
as an important factor in causing both melanomas and carcinomas. Health risks associated with
exposure to solar UVR may be greatly reduced by minimizing the time exposure. UV protection by
fabrics has recently become the focus of great interest, particularly in connection with environmental
degradation or ozone layer depletion. Clothing is perceived as a good means of sun protection, but
all apparel is not sufficiently protective against UV radiation. The development of effective UV cutting
materials or UV absorbers is, therefore, currently being sought.
A number of different types of UV absorbers have been proposed, but only four fundamentally
different classes have achieved commercial significance. These are the derivatives of
2-hydroxybenzophenone, phenyl esters, cinnamic acids and hydroxyphenyl benzotriazole. The
2- hydroxybenzophenone and benzotriazole, which are relevant to this study, preferentially absorb
the harmful UV radiation and convert it into heat energy by means of rapid tautomarism. Therefore we have selected the synthesis route based on benzophenone compound as a coupling component.
For this research work we selected 3 benzophenone based compound as a coupling component for
dye synthesis i.e. 4 - Hydroxy Benzophenone, 2,4 - Dihydroxy Benzophenone, 2 -Hydroxy –
4 - Methoxybenzophenone which are commercially successful UV protective agents. Synthesis
routes using benzophenone based compounds as coupler have been identified. Few Disperse dyes
have been synthesized using p-Chloro aniline, p- Nitro aniline, 2,4, Di nitro aniline, 4 Amino
Benzonitrile, as a diazonium compound and 4-Hydroxy Benzophenone, 2,4-Dihydroxy
Benzophenone, 2-Hydroxy-4- Methoxybenzophenone as a coupling component.
Synthesized dyes have been purified for NMR Studies. Application and performance evaluation of
these dyes and Other Acid & Disperse dyes synthesis is completed.

18
ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018
Achievements :
A detailed literature survey was carried out covering major international & national
journals, magazines, newsletters and web portal etc. for commercially available miniature
sensors for measuring heartbeat, sweat rate and skin temperature of the wearer. The
following are the gist of the following literature survey:
Heart beat measuring sensor and incorporation in sportswear: Currently available
sensors are wired, stiff and impact resistance is not checked. For embedment of this sensor
into textile, the sensor has to be fabricated on the flexible printed circuit board and the different
elements are encapsulated in soft, flexible and bio compatible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)
Position and mode of attachment of sensor majority depends upon the sensitivity of sensor
and signal strength of the body.
Sweat rate measurement sensor: Planar capacitive sensors for single-point measurements
of skin hydration and trans-epidermal water loss has to be fabricated.
Key design features would be: the total sensing area, electrode spacing and the insulation
thickness.
Bridging the sensors to the microcontroller and transmitter: Connection of sensor to the
microprocessor is required; the signal received from the sensor will be processed by the
microprocessor and will be transmitted to transmitter. The microprocessor and transmitter
should be in miniature form and both should be integrated inside the sportswear. Therefore,
the appropriate miniature microprocessor and transmitter need to be identified or fabricated
as per sensor design.
Sending the signal from transmitter to remote computer system/laptop: Transmitter
should be able to send the noise free signals received from microprocessor to the remote
computer system/laptop. Therefore, transmitter should be able to work on ANT+ so that the
signal can be send over a comparatively long distance than Bluetooth.
Software development: Compatible software has to be developed for monitoring, gathering
and processing of data received from transmitter and converting it in the useful information.
Development and testing of knitted sportswear and Hi-Visibility fabric:
Trials for development of quick dry, moisture management, breathable, high wickability,
good handle properties sportswear fabric have been done.
Different chemical treatments for enhancing hydrophilicity, wickability have been
imparted on sportswear fabric.
Testing and evaluation of the above mentioned functional properties has been done.
Trials and testing of high visibility clothing have been done.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018
(iv) Title of the Project: To develop a Light –Sensitive Photo-Chromic Smart Woolens by
Sol-Gel Surface Coating Technology and Printing Technology.
Objectives :
i. To develop smart woollen Textiles by applying smart colorants hybrid silica sol-gel onto the
surface of fabric.
ii. To impart photo-chromic property to wool by encapsulating photo-chromic colorants with
silica or other precursor via a sol-gel process and applying the hybrid silica onto wool fabric
and also by printing technology.
iii. To develop a light-sensitive reversible colour changing effect upon irradiation by
electromagnetic radiation, smart fancy colour effect in fashion woollen items.
iv. To impart UV protective function to wool.
v. Optimizing the process parameters to make it suitable for woollen and examining the
effects of silica precursors on the photo-chromic performance, adhesion of coating (e.g.
washing, abrasion fastness, etc), fabric properties (e.g. surface hydrophobicity, bending
and handle etc) and evaluation of effluent (COD, BOD, TDS etc.) also.
Achievements :
Photo-chromic Colorants can impart novel coloration effects and resistance to ultraviolet light
to textiles (in some specific cases). Photo-chromic colorants undergo a reversible color
change upon irradiation with UV light. These are used as smart colorants in a wide range of
areas, such as ophthalmic lenses, printing materials, optical recording media, optical
switches and optical shutters. These colorants are also used in plastic products like-Tea or
Coffee Mugs, Tooth brush, toys. Applying this functional colourants to a textile will provide the
textile with both a color changing effect and a UV protective function in some specific cases.
Such a textile may find applications in areas such as fancy clothes and camouflage fabrics.
In this project work we have tried to impart fancy effect by introducing photo chromic effect on
the fabric surface of woolen garment with addition of UV protective function. We have
attempted these functions by using photo chromic pigment with screen printing technology &
sol-gel surface coating technology. We have achieved desired effect with both the
technologies, giving colour appearance with 6 seconds exposure to direct sunlight. Samples
were prepared with both technologies e.g. hand gloves, cap & socks by sol-gel surface
coating method & Sweater, cap, muffler, ladies outer were by screen printing method. All
developed samples were passing in performance tests as well as comfort related test giving
UV protection. Samples developed using screen printing technology were producing influents
which are under the set norms. Process of sol-gel surface coating was producing effluents,
which are not meeting environmental norms and needs effluent treatment setup.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018
Literature survey: A detailed literature survey was carried out covering major international & national journals, magazines, newsletters and web portal etc. Based on the literature survey conducted and consultations from experts in the field of wet processing of textiles, dyeing, printing & finishing, it was inferred that Sol-gel technology and screen printing method can be a solution for development of Light-Sensitive Photo- Chromic Smart Woollens with colour changing property. As per the literature survey it was found that few specialty dyes also provide UV protection in some specific cases. So, it is expected that these treated woollen fabric may provide UV protection. So, we need to take R&D trials and evaluation.
Screen printing & Sol-gel laboratory R&D trials: Procurement of screen printing assembly and accessories is done. Laboratory Screen printing trials on wool fabric have been carried out. Optimization of Photo-chromic colorants on wool by printing method is also completed. Different trials were carried out for the optimization of recipe. With varying pigment concentration, time, variation in viscosity developer & binder concentration. Higher binder gives stiffer fabric & lower pigment concentration shows light image.
Testing & evaluation of untreated wool fabric sample (parameters like- GSM, Threads per unit length, thickness, count of the yarn etc.) and printed samples (Parameters like- Optical Response & Fading, Ultraviolet Resistance test, pH of aqueous extract of fabric sample, Colour Fastness to Washing , rubbing, perspiration, water etc.) have been carried out. Most fabrics are showing excellent fastness and performance properties.
(v) Title of the Project: To develop an effective and eco-friendly electroflocculation technique to treat waste water effluent with high FOGs (Fats, oils & grease), metals and organic loads for woolen industry
Objectives :
i. Optimizing the process parameters to make it suitable for woollen industry effluents with high grease and oil content. ii. Studying the effect of ultrasonication on electroflocculation for more efficiency and faster separation. iii. Feasibility study for scaling up of the developed technology to industrial scale
Achievements : A chemical free effluent treatment process was developed for treatment of wool scouring and dyeing effluent. The developed process does not use any anions as in the case with chemical coagulants thus no salinity is added to treated water making it better for reuse and lesser sludge compared to conventional techniques. This process is capable of reducing COD load up to 80% from wastewater thus reducing considerably the magnitude of waste which is concentrated (and treated separately) and release majority of water with low COD load for secondary biological treatment ultimately reducing the retention time in secondary treatment and thus faster treatment and discharge of treated water for reuse.
Advantages of developed Electro Coagulation Process. Removal of High Contaminant in the waste water More compact, less space requirement No Chemicals required. Far less Skill required in Operating & Maintenance Colour Removal up to 95% . BOD Removal up to 85% COD Removal up to 80%
