Start with the Main Frame Parts1 To make the side panels (A), startwith a 96" length of ‡×7‹" stock.(We selected cherry.) Rip the stock to7" wide, then crosscut two lengths to47Œ". From a second piece of‡×7‹×96" stock, crosscut the top rail(B) to 40fi" long.2 Lay out the full-size Side Panelpatterns on page 7 and Top Rail half-pattern shown below right in full sizeon large sheets of paper. (We keep aroll of butcher paper in our shop forthis purpose.) Make a copy of eachSide pattern and two copies of the TopRail half-pattern. Stack the two sidepanels using double-faced carpet tape, and adhere the top and bottom patternsto one face. Tape the two copies of thehalf-pattern together at the centerline. Then, find the center of the top rail, align the pattern centerline with it, andadhere the pattern to the stock.3 Fit your portable jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade, and saw the side panelsand top rail to shape, keeping yourblade outside the line. Sand to the lineusing a 1fi"-diameter fine-grit drumsander in your drill press. Smooth theangular details with a small triangularfile.4 To make the shelf (C), rip andcrosscut your leftover stock to6‡×40fi". From a third ‡×7‹×96"piece of stock, rip and crosscut twostretchers (D) to 3×40fi".5 Fit your table-mounted router witha piloted ‹" round-over bit, and routthe top and bottom front edges—notthe ends—of the shelf. Then, rout allfour edges of the front stretcher andjust the front edges of the back stretcherwhere shown on the Exploded Viewdrawing. Finish-sand the side panels, top rail, shelf, and stretchers using150- and 220-grit sandpaper.

Now, Add a Rail and SpindlesTo Accent the Shelf1 From your third piece of stock, ripand crosscut a shelf rail (E) to›×40fi". (Cut the rail to finishedlength after drilling the spindle holes.)

DRILLING DOWEL HOLES IN THE BRACKET STOCK

Mark the center of one edge, and layout 20 spindle holes from thiscenterline where shown on the SpindleLayout drawing on page 3. Now, dry-clamp the shelf rail to the shelf 1fi"from the front edge as shown above.Use your combination square totransfer the hole centers to the shelf1" from the ront edge.2 Set up your drill-press table with afence and ‹" brad-point bit. Set thequill to a ‰" depth, and drill the 20spindle holes on the shelf rail.Adjust the fence, then drill the shelfholes. Now, trim „" from each end

of the shelf rail for a finished lengthof 40›". Finish-sand the rail using150-grit sandpaper.3 Glue a 1fi" cherry spindle with‹×‰" tenons into each hole on theshelf rail. (See our Buying Guide fora mail-order source.) Glue the spindlesinto their respective holes on the shelf, then clamp. (We applied glue only tothe tip of each spindle tenon andclamped straightedges to the rail topand shelf bottom.) Allow the glue todry, then unclamp.

Your Quilt RackBegins to Take Shape1 Next, drill adjustment holes for thelower hanger brackets where shownon the Side Panel drawing on page 4.To ensure the accuracy of the holepositions, make a template as shownleft from a 7×12" piece of ¤"-thickperforated hardboard. (Peg-Board is afamiliar brand name.) Cut one edge ofthe hardboard ¤" from the center of arow of holes as shown. Align this edgewith the front of one side panel, andposition the template so the center ofthe bottom hole measures 13›" fromthe bottom of the side panel. Clampthe template, then drill through thesecond row of eight holes whereshown. To do this, use a portable drillwith a depth stop set to ¨" to allowfor the ¤"-thick hardboard. Drill a firstset of holes with an 11/64" twist bit toprevent the bit from wandering. Then, enlarge these holes with a Ç" twistbit.2 Lay out two bracket holes for theupper hanger on each side panel whereshown on the Side Panel drawing.Again, use a piece of perforatedhardboard as a template. (We cut a 3"-wide piece with one edge fi" from thecenter of a row of holes. We alignedthis edge with the side-panel back edgeto position a row of holes 2fi" fromthe back edge.)3 Lay out and drill four evenly spacedcounterbores and shank holes ›" fromthe back edge of the shelf bottom asdimensioned on the Exploded Viewdrawing. Next, lay out and bandsawfour right-angled, L-shaped corner jigsfrom ‡"-thick plywood. Use two ofthese to clamp the top rail to the topface of the shelf, then drill a pilot holein each shank hole. Unclamp, thenglue and screw the top rail to the shelfusing #8×1‹" flathead wood screws.Glue a ›" flathead cherry plug intoeach counterbore, and sand flush whenthe glue has dried. (See the BuyingGuide for a mail-order source.)4 Lay out and drill eight counterboresand shank holes on the outside face ofeach side panel where shown and

6 To wall-mount your rack, locate twostuds 32" apart in your chosen wall, and mount #10×2" panhead woodscrews. (Note: If you can’t manage tosituate the rack over two studs, mount toggle bolts and picture hanging hooksin the wallboard.) Attach two trianglepicture hangers to the back face of thetop rail, positioning them to fit thescrews. Adhere an adhesive cork padto the bottom back edge of each sidepanel to make the rack hangvertically. ¿

dimensioned on the Exploded Viewand Side View drawings. Next, lay outthe positions of the shelf assembly andstretchers on the side panels. Use yourfour corner jigs to clamp the shelfassembly to the side panels, then drill7/64" pilot holes through each shankhole to a total depth of 1‹". Repeatthis step for the two stretchers.5 Unclamp all parts, then glue andscrew the shelf/top rail assembly andstretchers to the side panels. Check forsquare, then wipe off any glue squeeze-out with a damp cloth. Allow the glueto dry.

Machine the HangersAnd Brackets, Then ApplyYour Finish1 Rip and crosscut two hangers (F) to1¤×40Á" from ‡"-thick stock. Setup your tablesaw and rip fence to cuta centered slot in both ends of eachhanger where shown and dimensionedon the Hanger and Bracket detail onthe Exploded View drawing. (Westood the hangers on end and clampedthem to a 10×15" sliding woodenauxiliary fence.) Use a rasp to taperthe inside tongue faces and smooth theslot surfaces. Then, finish-sand thehangers.2 Plane the remainder of your thirdpiece of stock to fi" thick. Rip andcrosscut two hanger caps (G) to1¤×40Á". Fit your table-mountedrouter with a ‹" round-over bit, androut the top edges of each. Finish-sandeach cap, then center and clamp a capto the top edge of each hanger. Drillcounterbore, shank, and pilot holeswhere shown and dimensioned on theExploded View drawing and theHanger and Bracket detail. Unclampthe parts, then glue and screw thehangers to the caps using #8×1‹"flathead wood screws. Glue ›"flathead cherry plugs into thecounterbores, and sand flush after theglue has dried.3 To make the brackets (H), rip andcrosscut a 2×14" piece of fi"-thickstock. Make a simple jig as shown onpage 5 by cutting a 2×14" piece ofperforated hardboard with a centered

row of holes. (In other words, rip eachedge down the centerline of a row ofholes.) Nail this piece to the edge of a‡×1fi×14" straightedge so that therow of holes is centered ‹" from thestraightedge. Place the jig over the topedge of your bracket stock, and clampthis assembly into your vise as shown.Drill two ‹" holes ›" deep (‹" deepplus ¤" for the hardboard thickness)starting approximately 1" from theend. (Again, we started with an 11/64"twist bit, then finished with a ‹" twistbit.) Skip a hole, and then drill twomore holes. Repeat this procedure untilyou’ve drilled four pairs of holes.4 Unclamp your stock, and make fourcopies of the full-sized Bracket patternshown at right. Align the holes shownon the patterns with the holes youdrilled in the previous step, and adhereyour patterns to one face of the stock.Bandsaw the four brackets to shape, keeping your blade outside the line. Then, sand to the line. Sand the flatsurfaces smooth. Cut four fl" lengthsof ‹" dowel stock, and chamfer oneend of each. Glue the other dowel endsinto the bracket holes. Now, trial-fitthe brackets in the adjustment holeson the side panels.5 Finish-sand the side panels, thenglue a cherry mushroom plug into eachcounterbore. (See our Buying Guidefor a mail-order source.) Now, applythe finish of your choice. (We brushedon Watco Natural Danish Oil Finish, let it stand for 15 minutes, then wipedoff the excess. After an hour, werepeated this procedure. We allowedthe finish to dry for 24 hours, thenrubbed it out with a cotton cloth. Next,we sprayed all surfaces with three coatsof Deft satin aerosol lacquer, sandingbetween coats with 0000 syntheticsteel wool.)
