Preface

The experienceThe Woodman Point Recreation Camp (Woodman Point Camp) is more than a physical site available for group bookings. It is a special place where Western Australians of all ages can participate in unique activities in an isolated living environment. Whether it is the conquest of the first abseil, the team success at crossing the ‘acid river’ or the wonderful feeling of sharing a campfire with new friends, your camp at Woodman Point will be a rewarding experience.

Purpose of this guideRecreation camping in Western Australia continues to be a popular leisure alternative for small to large groups from a range of sectors. The Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) in its current and past forms (including the National Fitness Council; Community Recreation Council; Recreation Camps and Reserves Board; and Ministry for Youth, Sport and Recreation) has provided accommodation-based camping facilities for the public of WA since 1939, when Woodman Point Recreation Camp was opened.

The Woodman Point Camp is becoming increasingly popular with a wide variety of groups in WA. Camps are also becoming increasingly risk-managed with staff in charge having moral and legal obligations to fulfil. The purpose of this guide is to assist organisers with the preparation of a high quality, safe and successful visit at Woodman Point Camp.

DSR Camps philosophyOur mission at DSR is to enhance the life of Western Australians through their participation and achievement in sport and recreation. DSR camps serve this mission as they are designed to provide physical activity and experiential learning opportunities through participation in outdoor activities.

Our camps are committed to encouraging maximum participation in a wide range of activities and programs. We believe that those who engage in our activities and programs will:

• learn skills related to a particular physical activity and be confident participants in the future;

• enhance their interpersonal and leadership skills;

• improve their self-management, decision making and time management skills; and

• learn to appreciate the outdoor environment for sustainability in the future.

Promoting participation in physical activity is our main aim because we realise the added value sport and recreation has on our well-being. Therefore, we will always aspire to provide a safe and supportive environment for the WA community to attain the holistic benefits that come from quality physical activity.

Information for schoolsLinks to the curriculum

Our recreation programs have been linked to the Western Australian Curriculum Framework and directly relate to Health and Physical Education learning outcomes. We also encourage the Overarching Learning Outcomes and Core Values of the Curriculum Framework. More information on these links can be found in The 4th R package at: www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps.

Department of Education Excursions (2003): Off-Site School Activities

“The Department of Education recognises that the experiences of students outside the school grounds

contribute to the development of their understandings, skills and attitudes. The provision of opportunities for students to learn from the wider community builds on

and reinforces the school curriculum.”

Encouraging participation

The following are ideas and suggestions on how you can encourage parents and students to participate in school camps.

• Utilise The 4th R resource to demonstrate the learning opportunities to parents, other teachers and school administration.

• Utilise the resources and research on the following websites to advocate the benefits of camp experience: www.natureplay.org.au www.beactive.wa.gov.au

• Advertise the camp in your school newsletter.

• Run parent/student information night and discuss:

» The aims and objectives of the camp.

» How they relate to the curriculum and student development.

» The risk management strategies Woodman Point Camp and the school will employ.

» Pictures and images of the camp experience.

• Developing a ‘fundraising for camp’ project .

• Having photos and images around the school.

• Utilising camp staff to deliver a presentation or discuss the opportunities of camp experiences (this option may be available – please contact Woodman Point Recreation Camp on (08) 9492 9797 to arrange this).

Camp journals have been developed for each individual year level to be used by your students on camp. They support the student’s camp experience and are available for free on our website.

Challenge yourself in the CUBE.

About Woodman Point Camp

OverviewLocated just 10 kilometres south of Fremantle, Woodman Point Camp is part of a four camp chain, and one of the two coastal camps within that chain, operated by the Department of Sport and Recreation. Bickley, Point Walter and Ern Halliday recreation camps make up the four. The proximity to Perth, range of accommodation styles, beach location and amazing range of adventure programs on-site make Woodman Point one of the premier camps in our state.

The Woodman Point site was first used in 1886 as a quarantine station for the Port of Fremantle before becoming a camp in 1982. The importance of sharing the historical significance of the site is emphasised through recent interpretive planning coordinated by the camp and the Friends of Woodman Point Recreation Camp Association. The camp recognises the importance of incorporating history-based recreation activities as options for client groups in order to provide additional educational outcomes during their attendance and participation at camp.

Due to its historical significance, the buildings within the site and the site itself have been afforded protection under the National Trust. The historical features of the camp are clearly evident in all aspects of the facilities, from the layout of the dormitory accommodation to the internal structure of the main dining hall.

The camp has recently undergone a significant renovation program to increase the standard of amenities and provide greater accessibility for groups looking to utilise group-based accommodation and participation in adventure recreation activities. Part of this refurbishment included the design and construction of a purpose-built roping facility, unsurpassed in the southern hemisphere for capacity, concept, safety and potential for physical activity and educational outcomes. The CUBE adventure roping and training facility was formally opened in 2007 and has added to an already well-developed land and water-based program range at the camp. This facility is great for activities during the winter months and allows groups to be active after sundown.

The natural coastal bushland and the pristine beach environment present a fantastic venue for a wide range of recreation programs, including Paddling, Raft Building, Team Games and Archery.

Woodman Point Camp is also an ideal venue for music, drama or study camps, sporting clubs, outdoor education studies, team building and seminars with a difference.

Woodman Point Camp is situated within the boundaries of the Woodman Point Regional Park, which has been zoned as such for its ecological and historical value. Some important ecological communities exist within the fenced boundary of the camp and such close proximity to these communities also present a rare opportunity for camp users to learn more about the importance of the local environment.

LocationWoodman Point Camp is located 10kms south of Fremantle and 32kms south of Perth and offers its own pristine beach. Hidden away in a 54 hectare nature reserve, Woodman Point seems a long way from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Staff

Our teamWoodman Point Camp is administered by the Department of Sport and Recreation through a team of six full time staff, under the direction of Camp Manager, Matt Hayes.

An additional team of dedicated and highly qualified outdoor instructors deliver and facilitate the camp’s adventure programs, together with a facilities and cleaning team which maintains the newly refurbished camp.

A central Bookings and Administration branch is based in our Leederville office. For information regarding the camp’s facilities or camp programs, please contact the camp directly on 9492 9797. If you wish to make an accommodation booking please contact our bookings office on 9492 9999.

Staff qualificationsAll of our staff are required to have Working With Children Checks and a National Police Clearance. All of our instructors and full time camp staff also have Senior First Aid qualifications or equivalent.

Instructors or camp staff involved in specialist recreation program instruction (roping, paddling, water) hold additional qualifications for that particular discipline and have been formally inducted on the program at Woodman Point Camp by senior camp staff.

For example:

• Water programs: Aquatic Rescue Qualification (preferred), Surf Rescue or Bronze Medallion.

• Surf ski programs: Australian Canoeing Coastal Guide Sit-on-Top.

• Roping programs: National Outdoor Leaders Registration Scheme (NOLRS) – Abseiling Guide.

All qualifications of these instructors meet the minimum requirements of the Adventure Activity Standards for WA, or the Department of Education (DOE) Outdoor Education and Recreation Activities: Procedures and Guidelines (whichever is the strictest for that activity). Many of our staff are advisors on the relevant committees who oversee the industry standards, and the DSR Camps strive to be the industry leaders in terms of qualifications, development of safety guidelines and instructor training.

For privacy reasons, we are unable to provide individual clients with copies of qualifications held by individual instructors, but we can provide a letter to clients verifying that all staff in contact with their group have the required qualifications.

Woodman Point Heritage TrailWoodman Point Recreation Camp was originally built as a Quarantine Station for the port of Fremantle. An informative heritage trail has been developed to educate the camp guests about the history of the former station, and the local flora and fauna. There are a number of information signs located around the site, each able to be located using a heritage trail map available from the camp office.

Woodman Point camp officeOur staff are based in the former quarantine station laundry room, located near the main roundabout next to the oval.

The camp office also contains a display based on the true history of the camp, a worthwhile visit for all clients.

All visitors to the site should register at the office upon arrival. Group leaders can collect their keys from the office, and emergency contact numbers and a site map is posted alongside the front door.

Guest laundryLocated in the former Doctor’s Residence precinct, camp leaders can utilise the shared laundry. There are two coin-operated (4 x $1 coin per load) washing machines, laundry trough and bench. You will need to bring your own washing detergent for these machines. See camp staff for further information.

Work shed areaFormer important buildings used in the processing of luggage and clothing during the quarantine era has now been converted to work and storage sheds for the general operation of the camp. These renovated sheds are located in the staff area next to the office. Access to these areas for camp guests is not permitted. Supervised access is allowed during formal tours and certain recreation programs.

A historic feature of this area is the boiler and fumigation equipment, which played a vital role in the elimination of pests and diseases at the quarantine station. This equipment is preserved in its original location and is featured in historical site tours and the Historical Night Tour program.

Shower blockPassengers disembarking at the former quarantine station were required to take a shower with disinfectant before accessing their accommodation at the site. The shower block building still exists and is located between the Acacia Day Area and the work shed area. For heritage conservation reasons, the shower area

Recreation hallThe recreation hall is a useful facility for groups wanting a separate indoor space. It is a basic building with the dimensions of 15 metres x 9 metres.

Availability of the recreation hall is provided in three timeslots: morning, afternoon and evening. Dormitory groups can book timeslots free of charge (under certain conditions) through the camp, however, guaranteed access can only be assured by making a formal booking of the facility with our Bookings Office for the applicable fee.

The room contains a wall-mounted whiteboard, a pin-up board and tables and chairs. An alarm system provides added security for groups if required. Audio-visual equipment can be hired from the camp and is primarily used in the recreation hall.

Bertie Poore RoomSpecifically designed for camp leaders for school groups, the Bertie Poore Room is a central meeting room designed to assist with the coordination of school camps.

Located in the middle of the main accommodation area of the camp, the room is the first to be renovated in the former Doctor’s Residence precinct. The room contains a tea/coffee preparation area, electronic whiteboard, board table, small fridge, lounge and DVD/TV.

This room is provided to school camp leaders at the discretion of camp staff.

inside this building has remained unaltered, and as such this building remains relatively unused.

This building is featured during historical site tours and the Historical Night Tour program.

Manager’s residenceThe Camp Manager resides on-site for the purposes of emergency response and site security. The Manager’s residence is located at the north-western corner of the camp, past the recreation hall and Tuart Cottage. The house was formerly named Cypress Cottage, and used to house the Officer in Charge of the quarantine station. Two large Norfolk Island pines planted by Bertie Poore now stand tall in front of the house.

General enquiries or emergencies should be directed in the first instance to the emergency camp mobile on 0414 448 088.

Isolation hospitalThe former isolation hospital for the quarantine station is located next to Jervoise dormitory near the entrance to the camp. This historical building is now the home of the Friends of Woodman Point Recreation Camp Inc. This association is a community group dedicated to protecting and promoting the heritage of the former quarantine station. The ‘Friends’ often conduct guided historical tours around the site. You can find further details about the Friends of Woodman Point Recreation Camp and the site history by visiting the following website: www.woodmanpointquarantinestation.com

CateringWoodman Point Camp is a catered venue, through Accolade Catering. Self-catering is only available in the Jervoise dormitory and Tuart Cottage. Groups may leave the site to access other self-catering options as they require (restaurants, neighbouring recreation park with BBQ facilities etc.). Guests are not permitted to hire other professional caterers to supply food on-site.

Menus and other information is available by contacting Accolade Catering on 1300 888 141 or www.accoladewa.com.au

All groups staying at our Owen, Spinifex or Grevillea dormitories must use Accolade Catering. They have a range of affordable and nutritious menus and can tailor your camp menu to suit your budget or particular requirements. If Accolade Catering cannot reasonably meet you special requirements (kosher, vegan, etc.), self-catering may be allowed with approval from the Camp Manager, however you will not have access to the main kitchen or cutlery and crockery. Such requests may only be considered if the Jervoise dormitory is included on the booking and the total number of

guests does not exceed 90 participants. No additional cutlery/crockery (on top of the regular supply for approximately 40 people at Jervoise) will be provided.

Note: Catering costs are separate to the costs associated with accommodation and programs.

Recreation

ProgramsStructured programs have been offered at Woodman Point since 1994. These have since evolved to contain some 21 distinct programs, with an additional range of program variations, training packages, workplace adventures, custom programs, self-directed activities and holiday programs.

The primary strategy outcome of the programs offered at our camp supports our department’s emphasis on promoting healthy, active lifestyles. By incorporating participation in recreation and physical activity during camping experiences, recreation programs provide a chance for the camp guests to experience new activities, explore the benefits of physical activity, and promote the maintenance of healthy lifestyles.

In order to meet these outcomes, the Woodman Point Camp operates on the ethos of Challenge by Choice.

Challenge by Choice is defined below:

All camp instructors facilitate programs in accordance with the philosophy of ‘Challenge

by Choice’. This is based on experiential learning theory, which we define as being able to

undertake an experience that a participant can relate back to their life or existing lifestyle in a

positive way.

There is an understanding that everyone has varying thresholds for challenge and these

challenges can range in their nature and variety. We aim to provide an experience that enables

participants to determine their own level of challenge and broaden and develop their

perceived limitations through participation in adventure activities both in individual and team

environments.

All camps staff will aim to provide a safe experience in which the participant can explore

and extend their abilities and limitations. Our DSR Camps Program Standards and Instructor

Code of Ethics encompass that overriding intent. Participation through excessive pressure and intimidation will not be supported by DSR

Camps.

This ethos recognises that the attempt is more significant than the result.

Programs

ProgramRecommended

for school years

Description

LAND

Archery# 4+ Archery is a challenging recreation program that tests participants’ aim and patience. Using recurve bows, participants shoot for ‘Olympic-style’ bullseye targets and develop their technique. Participants will learn the different parts of the bow and arrow and will be shown correct procedure and technique for loading and releasing.

Escape from Quarantine*#

4+ Escape from Quarantine is a night, team game based on the history of the Woodman Point Quarantine Station. Participants are required to act as patients and are to collect various objects scattered around the campsite to escape from the confinement of quarantine. Participants must escape before the quarantine station guards (adults, teachers or instructors) do their cell checks and find that they are missing. Participants will need to work in teams to find items, however the search may be hindered as guards may spot them while they are looking for items.

Historical Night Tour#

6+ The Historical Night Tour takes participants back in time when the camp was known as Woodman Point Quarantine Station (1886–1979). The tour takes the participants through the grounds of the modern campsite and sand tracks of the neighbouring regional park where they will learn about the original uses of various buildings and sites and some of the tragic stories that were lived out during the quarantine days. If requested we can include a few scary ‘ghost’ stories from staff about the Woodman Point site.

Icebreakers# 4+ Icebreakers are a set group of concise games that aid in introductions, group cohesion and are, most importantly, fun. They are a great way to begin and build the spirit of your camp.

Kite Making*# 3+ A program where participants can design, build and fly their own kite. Participants are able to show their creative side when designing and decorating their kites. They then construct them from the various materials provided and have the chance to see how they fly at the end of the session.

Orienteering*# 3+ Orienteering is an exploration program in which participants search and locate markers in a surrounding area in a set time period. Participants are split into groups and given a topographical map to locate markers in a logical order dependent upon allocated points and location. Participants gain valuable experience in map reading skills, teamwork, verbal communication, collaboration, cooperation and decision making.

Search and Rescue

5+ Search and Rescue requires participants to form two teams and locate hidden items spread over the campsite, as indicated on a map handed out at the beginning of the program. Each team has a two-way radio to communicate with the other team and program instructors. To make matters more interesting, there is a time limit to find all the items and instructors are enemy agents who can chase (and hinder) or be chased by (and perhaps help) group members. Search and Rescue is a team-based program that focuses on cooperation, communication, decision making and basic map reading skills. The program challenges participants to develop analytical and interpersonal skills.

Team Building#

5+ Participants progress through a variety of team building tasks that enhance their interpersonal and problem solving skills. These tasks have been developed so students can practice and develop communication, cooperation, trust, conflict resolution and decision making skills in a team environment. This program can also be delivered at the beach, or indoors if required.

Ultimate Sports

4+ Ultimate Sports is a wide range of games and activities that include frisbee, baseball, dodge ball, basketball and Vortex leader ball. All games are high energy and focus on team interaction and having fun!

Program Recommended for school years Description

ROPING

Abseiling 7+ Abseiling is an individual challenge at height where participants are let down over an edge using a range of specialist equipment. Participants descend using a safety line by qualified instructors to ensure their safety. Each participant is taught the safety aspects of abseiling from fitting a harness, to correct use of descending devices and correct abseiling skills and techniques.

Flying Fox# 4+ Flying Fox allows participants to traverse at high speed, nine metres in the air, along a steel cable across 100 metres. Participants work in small teams in order to dismount peers quickly and safely and attain as many opportunities as possible on the Flying Fox.

High Ropes 8+ A series of unique wire rope traverses are conducted at nine metres above the ground within the CUBE. Participants are attached to a harness and belayed by supporting members of their team on the ground. The high ropes course tests the climber’s individual physical skills, emotions and trust levels of the peers in their group.

Rock Climbing 6+ Rock Climbing requires participants to ascend a variety of artificial walls while being belayed by peers within their group. Each participant learns how to belay a climber and perform pre-climb checks for safety. Our climbing walls cater for a variety of participants, from simple climbs to more challenging routes.

Vertical Challenge

6+ Participants scale a range of vertical elements that are secured from the roof of the CUBE. Participants who are climbing are required to set goals and test their emotions. Elements include the caving ladder, caterpillar, dangle duo and cylinder cargo net. Participants are attached to a harness and work in teams to belay the climber.

WATER

Raft Building# 5+ Raft Building is a fun team experience where participants construct a raft out of simple materials including ropes, planks and drums. Instructors then challenge teams on a variety of tasks that test the durability of the raft on the water. Participants are also taught basic concepts and techniques that can be applied to other paddling activities. Raft Building is a unique team building program, aimed at encouraging groups to work together effectively.

Snorkelling# 6+ During Snorkelling participants learn basic skills and techniques to discover local marine life in an underwater environment. Participants gain knowledge, understanding and develop basic Snorkelling and safety skills to demonstrate during the program and recreate in the future.

Surf Life Saving

5+ Surf Life Saving is a program where participants gain knowledge of safe practices at the beach. Participants learn about sun-safe practices, rips, currents and formal communication strategies while at the beach. Participants also practice and demonstrate surf skills which include flag racing, beach running and how to use surf equipment (rescue tubes and boards) in rescue situations. This program can be tailored to meet specific requirements of the group.

Surf Ski Paddling#

7+ Surf Ski Paddling is an exciting way to explore the local coastline. Each participant is given expert instruction on how to handle a coastal sit-on-top kayak, capsize drill and guidance as they complete a series of team and individual tasks around the bay.

Water Supervision#

We can provide instructors for beach supervision that have nationally recognised rescue qualifications. Instructors are booked for 90 minute blocks and are charged at the applicable rate. Please speak to one of our Program Coordinators for more details.

* Can be self-directed for school groups at appropriate charge.# Programs can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.Custom packages can be developed for clients upon request. Woodman Point Camp has a range of exciting workplace adventure programs specifically developed for corporate team building days. Please contact Woodman Point Camp directly for more information.

Clothing and attire Due to the active nature of the programs offered, participants must wear enclosed shoes for all land-based and roping programs. Thongs or sandals are not suitable except for aquatic programs such as Surf Life Saving and Surf Skiing.

Rash vests or t-shirts must be worn for all aquatic programs. We encourage all participants to be sun-smart by wearing hats on programs outside.

Short tops (e.g. crop tops) that leave the midriff exposed are not suitable for roping programs such as Abseiling or Rock Climbing. Long hair must be tied back in a ponytail and necklaces, chains, scarfs or similar articles are to be removed from around participants’ necks before the commencement of any roping program. Large or lengthy earrings and exposed body piercing may need to be covered at the request of the instructor in charge.

InclusivityWoodman Point Camp strives to be inclusive through its programs and facilities. All accommodation and dining areas, excluding Jervoise dormitory and Tuart Cottage, provide wheelchair access, including ablutions suitable for wheelchair use. Any group requiring special requirements need to arrange a site tour before booking the facility to ensure the site is suitable. This can be arranged through the camp. With advance notice, many of our programs can also be modified to include all participants.

Department of Education guidelinesMost adventure recreation programs at Woodman Point Camp meet or exceed the Department of Education’s (DoE) Guidelines for Outdoor Education and Recreation Activities. In consideration of specific environments at the site, variations from the DoE guidelines exist to increase safety.

DSR can provide an aquatic supervisor for all non-structured recreation programs on the beach. Please see our website for pricing or contact a Program Coordinator for more information.

NOTE: Woodman Point Camp management strongly recommends that all groups intending to use the beach book qualified life savers through the camp for water safety. All groups should check with their governing bodies to make sure that their water safety strategy is in accordance with official procedures.

Recreation facilities

The CUBEThe CUBE was constructed as part of the 2006/07 capital improvement program at Woodman Point Camp. The primary building stands 13 metres high and its bright colours are visible along the nearby coastline and Fremantle approach roads. It is a prominent feature at the camp and artistically contrasts the historical feel of the remaining buildings. The building demands the attention and interest of client groups, visitors, trades persons and locals.

The specialised roping facility contains high ropes elements, internal and external abseiling at 5m and 9m, internal and external artificial rock climbing walls, several vertical climbing elements, two external 120m flying fox ziplines, briefing room, staff office, storage area and ablutions. It is a significant addition not only to the camp, but to the adventure recreation industry landscape in WA. There is simply no facility of its kind anywhere else in the state.

Main ovalAt the centre of the camp is a large grassed open space. The condition of the surface is not suitable for sports training, but rather provides a nice open space for informal activities. There are some flat grassed facilities within a couple of kilometres of the camp for groups requiring an even activity surface. A wide path disects the oval and provides a link between the accommodation precinct and arrival area.

Sports field/courtsLocated next to the main oval and the Acacia day area is a basketball and tennis court. The court has basic lighting for informal night use until 10pm. A synthetic grass sports field is located alongside the Owen dormitories on the main oval. This 45m x 30m pitch provides guests with a level field to play games, perform training drills, etc. These areas are available for all camp guests to share during their stay, and cannot be formally booked.

Our beach hosts a variety of recreation programs.

The beachThe beach along our camp boundary is a quiet stretch of coast, with waters that are protected from major swell by Woodman Point. As the Woodman Point Camp boundary stretches for some 500m along the coast, there generally are not many other public users of our section of beach. Access to the beach is via two access gates – one between Spinifex and Grevillea dormitory and the other near our program shed. Your dormitory key unlocks these gates.

Groups should be aware of their own duty of care in relation to water-based activities. Further guidance can be provided by staff at the camp, and camp instructors can be hired for group water supervision. Contact the camp directly for further information on 9492 9797.

The beach is also good for a group walk. Less than two kilometres south of the beach gates from the camp is the end of Woodman Point, which can be reached using the dual-use path. About 1.5km north of the camp beach entry is the John Graham Public Reserve and jetty.

Coastal dual-use bike pathExtending several kilometres in either direction along the coast from Woodman Point, the local dual-use bike path is a good way of exploring the local coastline. There are parks, picnic areas, playgrounds and toilets along the path, and most of the path is smooth red-stone bitumen, which is very user-friendly.

Self-directed activities

Self-directed programsWoodman Point Camp has a small range of self-directed recreation programs that can be conducted by camp leaders. Self-directed programs provide a cost-effective alternative to the camp-led programs. Further information about self-directed programs can be obtained by contacting a Program Coordinator at the camp.

Free play equipmentThere is a limited supply of sporting equipment available to borrow under a deposit arrangement from the camp office. Groups are encouraged to bring their own sporting equipment to use during their camp, particularly large groups.

Self-directed activities/gamesThe camp has a range of self-directed activities, which are handy last-minute additions to any camp schedule. These kits can be borrowed under a deposit arrangement fro the camp office and offer games such as Frisbee Golf and Sandcastle Building.

Heritage trailThe self-guided heritage trail educates camp guests about the important historical and ecological aspects of the camp. Maps are available from the camp office.

Information for camp leaders and supervisors

Leader responsibilitiesWhat is your role on camp programs?

All client groups with participants under the age of 18 years MUST supply appropriate adult supervision at each activity site. Woodman Point Camp staff will supervise the clients in relation to their safe participation in the activity, however client groups have the responsibility to monitor the behaviour of participants in matters not relating to the activity.

Teachers and adults play a vital role in ensuring participants have an enjoyable camp experience. Teachers and adults are encouraged to participate in camp activities as much as possible to create a positive experiential learning environment. Woodman Point Camp will allocate at least one (if not two or three, depending on the size of your group) suitably qualified instructor in charge of facilitating the activity. DSR requires one member from the client group supervisory team (teacher or adult) to be attendance with the group during each program.

We try to minimise the work of teachers or adults during their stay, however teachers and adults may be asked to deal with student misbehaviour on a case-by-case basis. DSR instructors will use low-key behaviour management techniques to ensure participants are engaged during the activities. It is an expectation that teachers and adults support the DSR instructor when required throughout the duration of the program. We recommend asking participants to stand aside for five minutes to reflect on their behaviour and the effect it has on them personally and the group. The teacher or adult can help in the reflection process.

Creating a positive experiential learning environment

We encourage the adult supervisor of the group to ensure the following so that participants enjoy their experience during camp programs:

• Participants are on time and prepared adequately for the specific program.

• Participants are encouraged through a positive, non-intimidating approach, towards the outcomes of the activity.

• They participate in the activity with the group; however if the activity requires problem solving or decision making refrain from providing too much support as this can impede on the skill being demonstrated by participants.

At times, teachers and adults may be asked to help facilitate certain aspects of the activity. This would be during times of questioning or debriefing to enhance experiential learning. The instructor will discuss this responsibility prior to the start of the activity.

What is your role outside of activities?

It is recommended that teachers and adults should discuss supervisory roles and responsibilities for during meals, at night and other free times. It is also recommended that room checks are done after lights are out to ensure participants are asleep. It is encouraged that a duty roster is developed to ensure staff are aware of their roles and responsibilities.

What to know before campIn the lead-up to your camp please use the Organisation Checklist on Page 23.

Supervision roster

A template for a supervision roster can be found at: www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps

Emergency plan

Our emergency plan can be found under the Resources section on our website: www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps

The Woodman Point Camp emergency mobile number is 0414 448 088. Camp leaders should provide their own emergency mobile number to parents of campers.

Risk managementFirst aid

Woodman Point Camp management strongly recommends that every camp has at least one first aid qualified person in attendance at all times.

Consequently, the absolute minimum standard of medical expertise recommended on camp is a current senior first aid or equivalent. The camp organiser should check with the administration of their organisation to ensure that all policies and guidelines are met. It must be noted that these may be different to recommendations in this booklet, in which situation the highest standard should prevail.

Harnessed programs

The camp conducts programs such as Abseiling, Climbing, Leap of Faith, High Ropes and Flying Fox. The minimum qualifications of an instructor to dispatch for these activities is National Outdoor Leaders Registration Scheme or competencies agreed by the Camps Chain Safety Group.

Water safety

Woodman Point Camp management strongly recommends that every camp has at least one qualified Aquatic Rescue Qualification (ARQ) through Royal Life Saving WA or Surf Rescue Certificate recognised by Surf Life Saving WA in attendance and control of every eight persons when in or near the water. It should be remembered that aquatic rescue qualifications are current for 12 months only and unqualified persons should only be used as additional support.

The ratio of qualified supervisors to persons in the water varies between organisations from around 1:8 to 1:20 and is constantly being reviewed by most organisations. Surf Life Saving WA can be contacted for the latest information on (08) 9293 9444.

Water safety personnel should be dressed ready to respond to an emergency and should have appropriate aquatic rescue equipment (e.g. rescue tubes on location). These may be obtained from the camp office.

Woodman Point Camp programs conducted in the water such as Surf Life Saving, Surf Ski Paddling and Raft Building have ARQ qualified instructors or higher. The camp can also organise lifeguards to supervise any in-camp group.

Alcohol policy

An updated version of our alcohol policy can be found on our website. In all instances, the application form must be sent to the Camp Manager well in advance of the camp.

At campOn arrivalGate access

To increase site safety and ensure that only authorised vehicles access the site, a security gate has been installed at the entrance of the camp.

Information for parents/guests

Getting ready for campGoing on a school camp is exciting for most children but can be terrifying for others. It is important that parents talk with their children prior to them going on camp to discuss any concerns they may have (e.g. missing home, sharing with others, fear of participating in a certain program). Parents/guardians should reassure them that they are in good hands and that the school and camp staff will take good care of them. Remember to also discuss what they are looking forward to or are most excited about attending camp. Talking to your child on a number of occasions prior to their attendance at camp will help to prepare them for the camp experience. Children who have had a sleep-over at family members’ or friends’ houses prior to camp are generally less likely to be homesick on camp.

If you are unsure about any of the following items please contact Woodman Point Camp on 9492 9797.

What to bring

When staying at Woodman Point Camp, the following items are required by each guest:

• Sleeping bag, single sheet and doona or sufficient blankets.

• Pillow case, or own pillow if preferred.

• Towels (one bath and one beach towel).

• Water bottle.

• Hat.

• Sunglasses.

• Sunscreen.

• Toiletries.

• Insect repellent.

• Personal medication (e.g. diabetes, ventilin, Epipen). Medical conditions and medications must be discussed with the camp leader.

• Torch.

• Raincoat.

• Bathers/board shorts and rash vest. Participants MUST wear sun-smart clothing during water programs (ie, protect full torso/shoulders).

• Thongs/sandals.

• Two pairs of trainers/sneakers (ALL roping and land based activities require enclosed footwear).

• Sufficient clothing suitable for the season and intended activities.

What to leave at home

Not permitted:

• Chewing gum.

• Spray aerosol cans including deodorant or insect repellent (bring roll-on types if required).

Not recommended:

• Camp participants are advised not to bring valuables to camp (e.g. jewellery, money, portable music and gaming devices).

• Mobile phones – contact camp leader directly in emergencies.

• Ugg boots, high-heeled shoes.

Luggage

Sturdy, soft-walled bags are suitable. All belongings and luggage to be properly labelled. Suitcases with wheels damage grassed areas if dragged off paths.

Medical conditions and medications

It is important that the group supervisors and DSR staff have ready access to relevant medical information in order to respond appropriately to an emergency situation and prevent further injury. Medications should be stored appropriately and located within close proximity to the person to whom the medication belongs.

The camp leader should contact Accolade Catering with any special dietary requirements of participants - ph: 1300 888 141.

Frequently asked questionsCan we come for a picnic, party or day excursion?Yes you can. Our Acacia Day Area is perfect to hire for your day requirements and can be booked through our Bookings Office on 9492 9999. You may also consider participating in one or more of the exciting recreation programs available at our site. Program enquiries and bookings can be made directly through the camp. Call 9492 9797 and ask to speak to one of our Program Coordinators.

The Acacia Day Area has a small meeting room, undercover veranda, two gas barbeques, a grassed area, fridge and ablutions. You can also arrange for Accolade Catering to provide lunch or finger food for that special touch.

Can our group check-in before 2pm?Check-in time for our accommodation groups is 2pm to allow time for our cleaners to prepare your facilities. Groups that choose to arrive on-site prior to 2pm to participate in our recreation programs will be encouraged, as long as they fit around the outgoing group’s schedule. Incoming groups that participate in programs may base themselves at a program area, the Acacia Day Area or the recreation hall at the applicable rate (if available). Accolade Catering may be requested to provide lunch at these venues, which may be a packed lunch, finger food or similar.

No incoming groups will have access to a dining hall, dormitories or tent camp areas before 2pm on the day of their arrival if another group is departing from the same area. Guaranteed access earlier than 2pm can only be given to a group that books the previous night’s accommodation. This is strongly recommended for groups that require extensive facilities early on their first day of arrival (and at a minimum charge rate this is quite affordable for larger groups).

Early arrival requirements need to be discussed and approved in advance. Contact our Bookings Office for more information on 9492 9999.

Can our group stay later than our 10am check-out time?Outgoing accommodation groups must vacate their dormitories by 10am. Upon prior arrangement, groups may use their respective Dining Halls for lunch (including Accolade Catered lunches). These lunches must be completed and the dining room packed down and swept by 1pm. Similarly, Acacia tent camping groups can remain for lunch but may be required to move to another venue within the camp after 10am and vacate the camp by 1pm.

The recreation hall (capacity 100 participants) may be utilised as a ‘late check-out’ venue at the applicable rate. This may be a good option for groups that wish to have facilities beyond those supplied at their dining hall (e.g. audio visual equipment) or if they require the use of a meeting room beyond 1pm. Booking of the recreation hall is subject to availability.

Can we hire audiovisual or meeting equipment?Audiovisual equipment for use in the recreation hall is available for hire, subject to an applicable fee and usage conditions. School groups may be required to hire this equipment on a ‘shared-use’ basis if multiple school groups have booked the site.

Tuart Cottage and the Bertie Poore Room have a TV with in-built DVD player, which is included as part of the use of these facilities.

Groups requiring additional equipment MUST consult with the camp staff, particularly if bringing their own equipment and power-cords. Arrangements may be required to plan appropriate power access.

Guests should note that the camp has multiple accommodation areas within the site. As such, guests should be considerate of other residents in relation to sound volume and appropriate finish times in the evening.

Photocopying (small quantities only) is available at the main camp office at a fee per page.

Woodman Point is primarily a recreation camp and does not cater for groups requiring extensive conference-style facilities. One of our other metropolitan DSR camps, Point Walter Recreation and Conference Centre, is able to provide more appropriate facilities and equipment for conferences and weddings.

Can we use Woodman Point Camp for a birthday party, wedding, bucks/hens party, etc?Woodman Point is primarily a recreation camp. Given that it is also a multi-user venue, parties associated with excessive alcohol drinking, noise or inappropriate behaviour are not permitted. Our facilities are also not suitable for weddings.

We do encourage birthday parties, family days/reunions and other events that incorporate recreation and physical activity.

All user groups wishing to consume alcohol at any time during their stay must abide by the DSR Camps Alcohol Policy, which can be obtained from our Bookings Office on 9492 9999 or www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps.

Can we drink alcohol at Woodman Point?DSR camps do not have a licence covering the sale or supply of alcoholic beverages. As a result, alcohol is not permitted at DSR camps unless approval has been provided by the Camp Manager to the client in advance of the booking date, and then only where it does not conflict with other groups. User groups wishing to consume alcohol at any time must abide by the DSR Camps Alcohol Policy which is on our website: www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps.

Is smoking permitted at Woodman Point Camp?Smoking is not permitted at Woodman Point Camp, given that the main users of the site are children. Smoking is also a fire risk and our fire detection system is very sensitive to all forms of smoke.

Use of any other illegal or illicit substance will not be tolerated at Woodman Point Camp, and may result in Police action and removal from the site.

How do we book accommodation or facilities?Accommodation and day-use areas of all DSR metropolitan recreation camps can be booked through our Bookings Office or on the DSR website at www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps. The camp Bookings Office can check availability of all areas at all four of our camps at the click of a mouse. They can also help you with queries regarding accommodation costing, deposits, refunds, etc.

The Camps Bookings Office can be contacted by phone on +61 8 9492 9999, or fax +61 8 9492 9998, or email [email protected]. For more information, go to www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps. You can also go directly to www.dsr.wa.gov.au/woodmanpoint for information specifically about Woodman Point Camp.

How do we make a booking for recreation programs? The first step for most groups interested in participating in one of our many exciting recreation programs at the site should be to visit our website: www.dsr.wa.gov.au/camps.

You can also go directly to www.dsr.wa.gov.au/woodmanpoint for information specifically about Woodman Point Camp recreation programs.

On the website, you will find a description of our programs, some action photos, a price list and associated age limits. Most of our programs have age restrictions by school year (e.g. Year 6).

The majority of our programs are conducted for 90 minutes including a safety briefing. Most programs also have a limit of approximately 20 participants per session depending on the activity. Our experienced Program Coordinators are highly skilled in designing a custom schedule of activities for your group, for any budget, timeframe or group size.

Call our camp direct and ask to speak to one of our Program Coordinators on 9492 9797.

Are there any free recreation activities or facilities at Woodman Point? There are lots of things to do at Woodman Point Camp for FREE! We have a basketball/tennis court and the beach can be accessed with each dormitory key through our private beach gates.

A small quantity of sporting equipment or free-play kits can be borrowed using a cash deposit arrangement from our camp office. There is also large campfire pit available on-site for use when fire bans are not in place.

There are many walking paths in, around and outside the camp, including the Woodman Point Regional Park. A dual-use footpath runs alongside our camp boundary.

For more ideas of things to see and do in and around Woodman Point, call our camp and speak to one of our staff on 9492 9797.

Can we have a campfire?Campfires can be an enjoyable way of bringing your group together at the end of a day. However, they have particular risks which restrict how and when they are allowed to be lit at the camp.

• Campfires are permitted in designated fire pits.

• No fires during FESA announced Total Fire Bans, or when the Fire Danger Rating for the day is Very High or Extreme.

• Restrictions between 1 December and 31 March:

• Fire no higher or wider than 1m x 1m.

• Only between 6pm and 11pm.

• Responsible person in attendance at all times.

• Running water with hose readily available.

• Weather conditions and fire warnings checked by client that day.

Check with camp staff on the day for any changes in site-related restrictions and to request a running water supply (hose).

Can we use a picnic area or have lunch if we are only at Woodman Point Camp to participate in some of your recreation programs? You certainly can. Groups coming to Woodman Point Camp for a day program but not requiring any lunch or shower facilities will not be charged any day-use facility charge.

Day program groups that require BBQ and toilet/shower facilities for lunch can book the Acacia Day Area at the applicable per-person and minimum charges.

Please discuss your group needs when you book your day program directly through on of our Program Coordinators at the camp on 9492 9797.

Can we have a one night accommodation booking?Normally we do not allow one night bookings at our camp. Our Acacia Day/Tent Area and Tuart Cottage are the exceptions, where we allow one night bookings at any time for any reason.

This policy is in place to allow schools or community groups unable to afford more expensive camp-style accommodation to access the facilities at an affordable rate. As such, we put a two night minimum stay restriction on our client groups (except long weekends and public holidays which have a three night minimum), so that a rogue one night booking does not block out a half-week or full-week for a school or community group wanting to stay for this longer period of time. Woodman Point Camp is a heavily booked facility and we have had to turn away many groups due to existing bookings.

Woodman Point has, however, has put some allowances in place to accept one night bookings in certain circumstances. These bookings must meet certain conditions, including:

• Must fill a one night gap between existing bookings.

• Can only be booked within two months of intended stay.

• Must have Manager’s approval.

For more information on one night bookings, please contact our Camp Bookings Coordinator on 9492 9999.

Can we book the entire site for exclusive access to all facilities?Large groups can book the entire camp at the applicable rates. Minimum charges exist for the Owen, Spinifex, Grevillea and Jervoise dormitories, Acacia Day Area and Tuart Cottage. If all of these venues are booked at the applicable rates, this is deemed to be a full-site booking. If one or more of these areas is not booked, we will leave those areas available for other groups to book. The recreation hall will be provided to groups with an exclusive site booking for no additional charge.

Please note, however, that Woodman Point Camp is used by other groups for different reasons. These include historical tours and community groups accessing the Isolation Hospital facility. There is also an on-site staff member who lives in a house within the camp. Woodman Point Camp may also conduct recreation programs or training at the CUBE during your stay. Other day groups may also be on-site for other camp-run recreation programs. These groups are under full supervision of qualified instructors employed by DSR.

What happens if we have to cancel our booking?Woodman Point Camp staff can take care of all enquiries you may have apart from the booking of accommodation, transfer of dates or cancellations. These tasks are coordinated by the Bookings Office (phone 9492 9999) during office hours. Penalties may apply for cancellations depending on the length of notice you provide. As you may appreciate, late cancellations are seldom ever rebooked.
