Physical Education

5th and 6th grade P.E.

The 5th and 6th grade PE

classes have started

volleyball. The students will

go over the fundamentals of

the game that include: Set,

Pass/Bump, and Serve. We

will also be going over some of

the basic rules of the game

before we get into a game.

Teamwork and moving are a

big part of the volleyball unit.

The students are working on

improving their Pacer by doing

time run in class. Every two

weeks we will add time to

each run.

Computer

5th Grade Computer

Applications

During our Online Communication unit, students will learn about the rules and responsibilities of having a school Gmail account. Intermediate students are expected to check their email at least every other day, from school or home, to stay informed and maintain a well-organized inbox. We discuss the KASD Acceptable Use Policy that students sign at the start of each school year. We learn that sending chain mail and mass emails are against the school policy, and can lead to scams and/or computer viruses. Soon, we will be practicing how to format professional emails, and students will compose and send a professional email to another student in class in order to demonstrate their understanding.

World Studies

6th Grade World Studies

Students are wrapping up their French unit! We completed the Parisian Monument Research Projects, which you’ve no doubt heard about after a month’s worth of researching, preparing, and presenting to the class! They turned out great, and the students will be fabulous tour guides should you decide to take a family trip to Paris!

We will soon be beginning our Spanish unit! Students are excited to learn more about the culture and people of Spanish-speaking countries, with emphasis on Mexico. All study materials for homework and assessments can be found online, on the World Studies website. This site is also linked to my website, the Berndt Bulletin. As always, if you or someone you know has connections to any Spanish-speaking cultures, and would be interested in visiting some classes to share information, we are always looking for guest speakers!

Choir Information:

Choir students are also busy preparing for the concert on December 4th. Practices combining boys and girls will be held on November 20th, 27th, and 29th. We will celebrate with a pizza party and viewing of a movie during lunch and recess on December 13th. Pizza will cost around $3.00, please don’t send money at this time. Look for a note that will specify the details. The Choir is also participating in the Kimberly Area School District Choral Music Festival, which will be held on February 8th at Lawrence Memorial Chapel. Several students are involved in choir festivals this year. The first festival was Singing in Wisconsin, held at Kaukauna High School on Saturday, November 10th.

I am so thankful to work in a school with students and parents that are supportive of music education. Learning music isn’t just for today, it’s for a lifetime!

Healthy Living 5

th Grade

As the quarter winds down, so does

our unit on emotional health. The focus of

the unit was on stress and anger- two

emotions that can significantly negatively

affect our physical, mental and social

health. We learned about the cues our

body gives us as reminders to calm down.

We brainstormed and practiced ways to

calm down and talked about

consequences if our bodies are in

“distress”. Feel free to remind your

children about what they learned in health

when you see anger or stress. (One of our

most helpful strategies is to talk about it!)

Awareness of the strategies and how stress

and anger affect us will positively impact

health.

We will start next quarter with

decision making. Using the Kimberly Area

School District decision making steps will

help us to evaluate the situations we are in

and ask questions like: Is it safe? Is it

responsible, respectful, kind and honest?

What are the pros and cons? As your sons

and daughters get older and more

independent, they will be making more of

their own decisions. Steps to help their

decision making will hopefully guide them

to make the right choices.

As always, if you have any questions or

concerns, please contact me.

6th Grade Art

The 6th grade students created a three dimensional object out of different size wire. They used many different techniques of wrapping wire with pliers and their hands to create their wire sculpture. The sculpture needed to be 3-D, and if their sculpture was flat they needed to wrap many layers of wire around their sculpture. If the students wanted to use colored wire they could incorporate that into their sculpture. When the students were all finished with their wire project the students then made a name tag and used their chrome book to fill out their check off sheet (self- assessment) on our Google classroom. The wire projects will be displayed in the hallways when they are finished.

The Elements of Art we have covered are: Color, Form, Line, Shape, Space and Texture.

Band

5th and 6th Grade Band

I can't believe second quarter is here! All of our bands are

working hard on music for our

concerts in December and January. Concert attire is nice clothing, no blue jeans, no t-shirts with writing or athletic clothing. The 6th Grade Concert is December 4, 2018 at 6:30 pm. The 5th Grade concert is January

15, 2019 at 6:30 pm. Students are asked to arrive approximately 30 minutes early. Exact times will be

sent home at a later date.

Band and choir t-shirts are ordered! Shirts should be

arriving in one week.

Ms. Shimek (ext. 2621) Mrs. Carpenter (ext. 2654)

MUSIC

Fifth grade students have been

practicing using our newest rhythms,

continuing to explore different ways of

making harmony. They are preparing

songs for our January 15th concert. This

is the same day as the band performance.

All 5th grade students are expected to

perform in the evening performance.

Attire for the performers is to be dressy –

slacks, skirts, or dresses (with low or flat

heel) for the girls, khaki or dress pants for

the boys with a nice shirt or sweater and

dress shoes or dark athletic shoes. Please

stay away from logos on the shirts. It

would be a great reason to buy some nice

dress clothes for the upcoming holidays.

Sixth grade students will be singing

during the December 4th concert. This

concert is for all students in 6th grade and

will include the entire class. They are

singing familiar songs and performing

with African instruments. It will be a

great concert! It is expected that every

sixth grade student will be in attendance.

Attire for the performers is also to be

dressy – slacks, skirts, or dresses (with

low or flat heel) for the girls, khaki or

dress pants for the boys with a nice shirt

or sweater and dress shoes or dark athletic

shoes. Please stay away from logos on the

shirts. For the remainder of the quarter,

we will continue to learn how to read

music out of choral scores in preparation

for 7th grade choir and future singing

opportunities, and also play songs on the

tone chimes.

WOODLAND HOLIDAY BOARD

"Mr. Calmes would like to thank the following 6th grade

students: Makenna Calmes, Miranda Calmes and Sarah

McCarthy. These young ladies put in many hours of hard

work on the Woodland Intermediate Holiday Board, and

the board looks fantastic. A reminder to all Woodland

Intermediate students, staff and parents that the board

they decorated will be on display at Memorial Park (located

across the street from Mapleview Intermediate

School). The Memorial Park holiday lighting ceremony,

called: "Christmas at the pond" (includes all the holiday

boards from each school in our district) will be Sunday,

December 2nd at 6pm. So please take some time during

the holidays to stop out and see all their hard

work! Great Job Ladies!"

Elementary (920-739-3578). If you would like to donate or are

in need of some assistance with resources, you can contact

Mapleview or Westside. In addition to the clothes, Woodland is

frequently being offered ways to support our families if they

should fall upon economic hardship. Please reach out to your

child’s teacher or school counselor if you are in need of any

assistance throughout the year.

When to Keep Your Child Home

Children should be kept home from school when they don’t feel well. It is important to get the rest they need to

recover, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and the staff. If you are unsure of when to keep your

child home, please contact the school nurse or your family medical provider.

The following symptoms may suggest a communicable disease. Children who have the following symptoms should

be kept home from school until a doctor has seen them, they no longer have symptoms indicating a communicable

disease or they have received treatment for at least 24 hours for certain diseases.

SORE THROAT

An oral temperature of 100.4 or higher indicates a fever. If your child has a temp of 100.4 or higher at school he/she will be sent home. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If a fever is accompanied by a sore throat, stomach ache or head ache it may be strep throat. Strep throat is diagnosed by a throat culture obtained at a medical clinic. If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, your child must be on appropriate antibiotics for 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If your child has an episode of vomiting and diarrhea at school, he/she will be sent home. Anyone with these symptoms should stay home until symptoms are absent for 24 hours.

A cough may be a sign of many different illnesses. If a cough is accompanied by a fever, sore throat, body aches or any other symptoms you should keep your child home. Any cough that lasts for more than several days should be discussed with a doctor.

Rashes and infected sores needed to be diagnosed by a medical provider. Many skin rashes such as impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, Fifth disease or Hand Foot and Mouth disease are very contagious. Students may return to school once the rash has been diagnosed and treated for 24 hours or cleared by a doctor. Open sores from illnesses such as chicken pox and impetigo may need to be covered at school with bandages for several days.

Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation is usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school that can safely provide.
