In an OVER THE POST staircase design, the handrails run over the newel posts and the balusters are fitted into the handrailing. These types of staircases, require the use of fittings and volutes. LJ Smith offers a wide selection of Connect-A-Kit ® Handrail Fittings.

A POST TO POST staircase design, is a system where the handrail is mounted between the newel posts. These are the most common of

staircase designs, these systems can use box newel or standard smaller newels.
