Bees from one hive tend to visit the same type

of flower. This is why there are different f la-

The Queen is the only bee able to lay eggs. Sfie

can lay between 3 and 5 thousand a day for f ive

months of the summer. For the eggs to hatch the

temperature must remain in the 70 's. If it gets

colder the young bees and drones keep the eggs

warm with their own bodies. Three days after the

egg is laid a  larva hatches out of it .

It is whi te in colour and has no wings or It is fed by the worker bees. In the first ha

it doubles its weight. On the ninth day the larva turns

pupa and the cell in which it is lying is sealewith a kind of wax. 21 days later the bee ised, comes out of the cel l and begins to work

One bee can tell another what direction to

take to a flower. If it dances on the cone

with its head pointing to the sun and moving

in a half circle, first to the right and then

to the left, this means that it has found food

in the direction of the sun . If it faces away

from the sun and does the same dance, it

means that there is food in the opposite

direction .

Bees were on the earth long before man. The very

primitive men soon discovered the value of honey.

It was probably the only form of sugar that very

primitive man could obtain. It also had great value

in helping to cure illnesses whilst later it was

used formak inga very common drink called 'mead'.

It was also mixed with wine and other alcoholic

drinks. it was known in Egypt long before thebirth of Christ . It was used in helping to embalm

people and hence had a great value.

it has fine curat ive qua lities for animals and has

even been given successfully to fish.

It is found in many of the creams and lotions used

in women's beauty parlours. It is in chewinggum, in the cent re of golf balls; preserves eggs in

cold storage and has even been used as a  powerful

anti-freeze mixture in car radiators because honey

How then does man 'rob' the bees of their honey? The bottom of

the hive is ca ll ed the 'Brood Box' and it is only in this box that the

Queen bee lays her eggs. A metal screen ca lled a 'Queen Excluder '

is placed between the brood box and the 'supers'. The Super is thename given to the top boxes in which honey is stored by the bees.

When the combs inside the supers are fully capped with wax by the

bees, the honey is ready for the beekeeper to ta ke . He takes the

supers, with their full combs of honey, to his caravan where he

takes the honey from the combs. You can see him doing this in

this picture. After he has taken the honey the beekeeper puts the

empty combs back into the hive for the bees to fill again.

In this picture you also see a 'brood comb' which contains hundreds

of eggs which are hatching into bees. You will notice cells full

of honey all around the brood comb. This honey is left as food for

the young bees.

Honey is produced in many countries of the

world. These countries are, in order of

production starting with the largest: United

States, Mexico, West Germany, Australia,

Canada, Argentine, Turkey, Czech oslova kia,

New Zealand, Greece and Switzerland.

Every year Australia produces between thirtyand fifty million pounds weight of honey.

About half of this is exported each year .

Ninety per cent of all our exports of honey

go to the Uni ted Kingdom and West Germany.

VITAMINVitamins are

an essential

part of our

food. They

help prevent

diseases like scurvyand rickets.

Honey is very rich invitamin

B2 and glucose. Athletes

need glucose to give themenergy and vi tal i ty just like

the boy in the pictu re . Our

bodies need vit amin 82 not

only to help us digest other

foods b utalso tohelp keepaw ay

many in fect ions. Look at the

picture with the different foods

at the side here. All these

foods contain vitamin B2 , but

honey, when compared with

them has IZtimes more v itamin

B2 than the apricots or grape-

juice or apples and fi ve timesmore than is in cheese and

carrots. The amount of

vitamins in honey is not large

but the type of vitamins it

contains is very important for

helping us to digest other foods

which we ea t. In the be

ginning of this story you read

how the bee coll ects pollen

from the flowerc as well as

nec tar . It is the pollen in

the honey which gives it i|^

vitamin content.
