imperial lacquerwork used to be produced on boats at sea, so the artisans could work in a dust-free environment. the cubes in the cubic dream series are made in Vietnam using the same ancient techniques and materials. the lacquer is made from the resin of the cashew tree. a mother-of-pearl pattern is hand-cut and attached to a cube made of mdf, which then receives a coat of lacquer. after a day of drying, the mother-of-pearl is scraped clean and the cube sanded and polished before the next layer of lacquer is applied. after the eighteenth coat, the mother-of-pearl is embedded in the lacquer and the cube has acquired a deep gloss. the textures of the lacquer and mother-of-pearl are shown off to full advantage on the austere cube shape. this combination means cubic dream suits a variety of interiors, from chic hotels to hip living rooms.

In the Taj Mahal lamps, the pattern of holes filters light in the same way as the openwork stone facades of mughal architecture in india. the taj mahal in agra is the best-known example. wonderable’s lamps are made there by stonecutters who grew up with the tradition and work with the same types of indian rock. they cut rough stone into blocks of the correct size, round these into spheres, and hollow them out on a lathe. they then hand-drill four adjoining holes to create each distinctively shaped opening in the pattern. A single Taj Mahal lamp creates a refined, tasteful accent in a room. several together make up an atmospheric lighting object.

these lamps are made of waste paper obtained from a Vietnamese printer, in the same manner as classic Vietnamese garlands. each hallelujah consists of 500 colourful sheets – leftover covers for a local glossy magazine. each sheet is printed with lines of glue and stuck to the one before it. when the stack is thick enough, it is cut into the right shape and the first sheet glued to the last. The Hallelujah lamps give off a fine, colourful filtered light. Since no two magazines are the same, each lamp has a colour mood all its own. wonderable has pictures of all the individual lamps – ask to see them and choose your favourite.

the souvenir vases are covered in typical dutch trinkets from thailand. boxes of these ceramics miniatures had been lying in a thai workshop, waiting to be exported to the Netherlands after sales suddenly went flat years ago. Now they’re getting a new lease on life as part of these wonderable vases. each vessel is unique, thanks to the ever-changing selection of miniatures, and numbered with a hand-painted ceramic disc. the thai makers sign and date each souvenir vase inside the rim before sending the miniatures off to the netherlands at last. transformed into unique objects, they’re now fit to be displayed in the choicest spot in the house.

All the vases in the Thai Blue series are hand-painted with traditional Thai flower patterns that call delft pottery to mind. the resemblance goes back 500 years, to the time when delftware was invented as a cheap substitute for blue-and-white chinese porcelain. old traditional techniques and experimental processes come together in the thai blue vases. the master painters sign each vase in their own language. the windmill, a classic dutch icon, constitutes a humorous reference to the blue ‘delftware’ the same producer manufactures for the dutch tourist market. wonderable’s thai blue vases are the fruit of centuries of global trade and idea exchange.

in sporty spice, the extravagant richness of india’s textile tradition is made tangible on a series of classic bowling bags. tens of thousands of transparent glass beads are hand-embroidered over a screen-printed black-and-white floral pattern. Depending on the light, the bead layer can glitter or let the underlying pattern show through. the racing stripes and leather handles and piping toughen up this elegant bag. the lining of the larger models features compartments for documents, pens and a mobile phone, making them perfect for business use. the small evening bag, meanwhile, is ideally suited for stealing the show.
