RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

Give blood. The need is constant.

The gratification is instant.

St. Malachy’s Church Hall will be the site of another Blood Drive, 1-6 PM on this Monday, May 2nd.

Sign up in the vestibule for a time slot to give blood.

Or register for a time slot online - In the address bar, type “American Red Cross”. Click on “American Red Cross Official Site”. Click on “donate blood”, and scroll down to “ready to donate”. Then type in zip code 13460 and click on the red colored “find a drive”. Then on left side of page scroll down to May 2nd St. Malachy’s and click on St. Malachy’s. NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Novena to the Holy Spirit is the oldest

Novena of the Church. It represents the

nine days that elapsed between our Lord’s

Ascension and the descent of the Holy Spirit

upon Mary and the Apostles and disciples

gathered in the Upper Room in Jerusalem.

The Novena to the Holy Spirit is a

wonderful way to pray for a new

outpouring of the Spirit on our own lives,

on our Parish and on the world.

The Novena to the Holy Spirit began on the

day after Ascension Thursday, that is, on

Friday, May 6th. To participate, please pick

up a copy of the Novena on the big table in

the back of the Church. ST. MALACHY’S NURSERY SCHOOL

St. Malachy’s Nursery School will open on

Sunday, June 5th!

The Nursery School will be for all children

under the age of five.

It will be held in the Church Hall during

the 9:00 AM Mass every Sunday.

The mission of the Nursery School is

twofold:

1) To enable parents of young children to

get more out of the Mass and to enjoy

it more.

2) To give the little ones a fun, Christian,

leaning experience.

The Nursery School will be staffed mainly

by young mothers, as well as others.

For more information, call Leah Fowler at

315-750-9441 the Parish Office at 674-

9625.

WEARING RED FOR PENTECOST

The liturgical color for the great Feast of Pentecost is red (Holy Spirit, tongues of fire, love). Therefore, everyone is encouraged to wear as much red as possible to Mass on Pentecost weekend, May 14th/15th, if they have anything red

BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST,

Please read the following article on assisted

suicide. It is very important.

Fr. Smith

ASSISTED SUICIDE

Legislation has been introduced in the New York

State Legislature that would allow doctors to

legally prescribe a lethal dose of pills at the

request of a terminally ill patient.

Why is our Church against physician assisted

suicide? First, let it be known that the Catholic

Church does not teach that life must be

preserved by any and all means. Extraordinary

means, such as breathing machines, are not

necessary when death is near. People must be

allowed to die naturally. But we cannot

intentionally take their lives or help them to

deliberately hasten their death.

Under the proposed New York legislation,

patients would be eligible for assisted suicide if a

doctor has diagnosed them with six months or

less to live. Yet doctors cannot accurately predict

life expectancy. And it often happens that

someone outlives the odds.

May 7th/8th 2016

Seventh Sunday of Easter

14

2

Doctor-assisted suicide is fundamentally

incompatible with the physician’s role as a

healer. It undermines the bond of trust between

doctors and their patients. The way that doctors

respond to their patients affects the patients’

view of themselves and their self-worth.

People who say they want to kill themselves are

often clinically depressed. For those who receive

a terminal diagnosis, the stress and turmoil can

lead to a depression. Yet there is no requirement

in the legislation that patients receive counseling

or mental health treatment before they choose a

lethal and irreversible course of action.

The proposed legislation offers no protections to

ensure that the patient is not being coerced into

taking the drugs, or even to prevent another

person from administering the drugs. While

legal witnesses must be present at the time of

the request, one of them can be someone who

stands to gain financially from the patient’s

death. Legalized assisted suicide empowers

others – family members , health care systems,

insurance companies – to pressure and exploit

older, weaker, vulnerable persons in order to get

them to cut short their lives.

All of the so-called safeguards of assisted suicide

occur at the time a

request for medication is made by the patient.

There are no safeguards at the time the patient

consumes the pills, which could be months or

even years after the request is made. Family

members don’t have to be notified, and no

medical professional is required to be present.

In Oregon, where physician assisted suicide is

legal, in 89% of the cases in which the assisted

suicide was carried out, the prescribing doctor

was not present.

Under the proposed legislation, doctors are

specifically required to fabricate the patient’s

death certificate and state untruthfully that the

cause of death is the underlying disease, rather

than the unnatural act of suicide.

New York State spends millions of dollars each

year to prevent suicides with anti-bullying

campaigns in schools, awareness training in

prisons, toll-free hotlines and extra safety

precautions on bridges. It makes no sense to

recognize suicide as a statewide public health

concern while simultaneously promoting it as

“dignified and humane” for certain populations.

Assisted suicide is less expensive than pain-

relieving and supportive care at the end of life.

As insurance companies and governments seek

to reduce health care spending, will they

promote this option in order to reduce expenses

and liability? In Oregon, some patients have

noted that lethal doses of drugs were covered by

their insurer while cancer treatments were not.

Once the government approves of assisted

suicide for those with a 6 month terminal

diagnosis, it will be difficult to limit it to that

group. In Oregon, where the law is six months,

lawmakers are already considering extending the

terminal diagnosis to those with one year or less

to live.

In the European countries that have legalized

suicide, it has led to widespread euthanasia,

including involuntary killing of patients who

never asked for suicide, the killing of children,

and the establishment of stand-alone suicide

clinics. And advocates there have already said

that they intend to extend the reach of assisted

suicide beyond the terminally ill.

In this country, it should also be noted that

studies have shown that the overall suicide rate

increases in states where assisted suicide is legal.

Maintaining New York’s ban on assisted suicide

does not mean that terminally ill patients must

die an agonizingly long

and painful death. Almost all physical pain can be

controlled through pain management and

medications, and measures that are unduly

burdensome may be removed or withheld,

allowing natural death to occur. Hospice can

provide comfort and comprehensive care.

Let your state legislators know your position on

physician assisted suicide by going to The New

York State Catholic Conference website and

clicking on “Take Action”.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST,

It is time once again for us

to support the work of our Church through the

annual Bishop’s Hope Appeal. This appeal is of

vital importance to the mission of Christ through:

our university and hospital chaplains, outreach to

the rural and urban poor, parish faith formation,

Catholic schools, family life programs and many

other good works.

This year, St. Malachy’s assessment has

gone up, from $16,008.89 to $16,832.27. But

50% of the amount by which a parish exceeds its

assessment is given back to the parish the

following Spring.

Every Catholic family in the Diocese should

have received a letter from the Bishop, along

with a pledge form. We would like to ask

everyone to turn in their pledge form by next

Sunday, May 22nd, by either dropping it into the

collection basket or mailing it to St. Malachy’s.

We would like to have all pledges go through the

Parish rather than being sent directly to the

Diocese.

Again this year, we are asking every family

to pledge $120.00 ($10.00/month), more if

4

possible. Any checks written should be made out:

Hope Appeal.

Please be as generous as possible. Only if

some families pledge more than $120.00 will we

make our assessment. Last year the average

pledge of families throughout the Diocese was

$178.37. The average pledge of St. Malachy’s

families was $204.04! Therefore, some families

gave way more than that.

All we ask, however, is that each family do

the best it can. What we hope for most of all is

that every family in the Parish make a pledge, no

matter how small, because, as a parish family,

we want to be all in this together.

Thanks for reading this. May our Risen

Lord Bless you always.

The joy of a child is contagious, isn’t it? A child’s giggle is simply infectious! We can’t help but smile when we observe the innocent playfulness of children. Could it be that we secretly wish we could re-live those joy-filled days that we never wanted to end? You know the ones when we heard, “Come in when the street light comes on.” Those were the days of endless play, imagination and laughter with friends. Do you often wonder like I do why adults are so serious? What can we learn about God through our relationships with children? If any of this makes you curious, then please join us for this year’s women’s retreat. You’ll have a chance to

rekindle that childlike joy! For details call Tanya at The Good News Center at (315)735-6210 or visit us online www.thegoodnewscenter.org.
