    Fellowships in Womens History 2015-2016

The Andrew W. Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Womens History

For a term of one year, one part-time, pre-doctoral internship will be offered within the New-York Historical Societys new Center for the Study of Womens History. This fellow, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and joining the New-York Historical Societys larger community of fellows, will have the opportunity to undertake original research while supporting and participating in the ongoing scholarly and public programming of the Center.

Functioning as a research associate and providing programmatic support for the Center, the Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellow will assist in the development of content for Womens History installations and associated educational curriculum and programming. The fellow will contribute to the process of realizing temporary, rotating exhibits within the new galleries that consider women from myriad entry points, and work with objects, artworks, and archival collections mined for stories about the female experience. The fellow will also have access to the New-York Historical Society collections, will support promotion of the Centers resources to the scholarly community, and assist the postdoctoral fellow in the development and implementation of the symposia.

The ideal candidate will have a scholarly focus in Womens Studies. Because of the projects multidisciplinary nature, the intern will be exposed to and collaborate with various N-YHS departments: museum curatorial (public history and exhibition technology); education; public relations (website); library (research and fellowship program); and public programs. Applicants must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in the humanities and be on track to complete their degree. Applicants are required to submit a CV, graduate school transcript, writing sample, cover letter, and three letters of reference. The predoctoral intern fellow will serve for the 2016 calendar year at a stipend of $15,000/year. This position is not full time and will not receive full benefits.

The Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Womens History

For a term of two years, one full-time post-doctoral fellow will work as a public historian and scholarly coordinator for the new Center for the Study of Womens History. The Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow will play a critical role in engaging the community by researching, developing, and implementing public programs around the Centers humanities themes. He/she also will have the opportunity to capitalize upon the institutions existing relationships with a wide constituency in order to broaden connections and community between scholars and teachers practicing in public fields with members of the general public, including young learners.

The ideal candidate will have a scholarly focus in Womens Studies and some experience in public history. Because of the projects multidisciplinary nature, the candidate will be exposed to and collaborate with various N-YHS departments: museum curatorial (public history and exhibition technology); education; public relations (website); library (research and fellowship program); and public programs. Given the mandate and mission of the Center, this fellowship will be critical to the realization of cornerstone activities and ambitions. The fellow will participate in developing programming and be deputized to develop certain projects independently. These projects might include organizing scholars for symposia; creating public programming for adults and/or children and families; collaborating with educators on curriculum; outreach to neighborhood communities; or developing interactive components to complement the physical installations.

Applicants for the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship must hold the PhD; ABDs and other predoctoral candidates will not be considered. Applicants will be required to submit a CV, graduate school transcript, writing sample, cover letter, and three letters of reference. The postdoctoral fellow will be in-residence as a full-time staff member for a period of two years, at a stipend of $50,000/year, and receive full benefits.
