For mostYale men the langorous song strikesthe ear with equal effectiveness and,similarly, without warning - at night,in midweek, on a balmy spring after-noon. Within minutes the afflictedYale. man may conceivably discoverthat he is wending his way over anyof several well-worn New Englandpaths in the direction of one of thesurrounding women's colleges. Thealternatives are many; the choice ofcompanionship unlimited. Some ofthe leaders in this perennially popu-lar field:

Albertus Magnus: Out Phelpsgateway, take a left on College, andstart walking. Albertus Magnus andsix hundred young Catholic ladiesare but a twenty-five minute walk.And for the freshman who is tied tothe campus, the long, uphill walk iswell worth the effort. The admissionspolicy has radically changed in thelast few years, and there are a highernumber of acceptable girls than usualat Aggie Maggie. Don't overlook thisbet - the convenience of the towndate makes this school increasinglydesireable as .the weather gets worseand the highways ice up.

Bennett Junior College: Acrossthe New York line and not too farfrom Poughkeepsie, this two-yearcollege offers girls teachable andreachable via Route 34 to Interstate84. Follow 84 to Brewster turn-offonto Route 22 North, to Dover Plains,left onto 343 to Millbrook. and, 10,you are there. (1 hr. and 30 min.)But once you are there, you imme-diately wonder why you came. Al-though the girls are pleasant enoughto oggle, this is the school where youlearn that there are more importantthings than looks, among them

brains. One other point. Bennett isthe only school with which we arefamiliar where gentlemen must weara coat and tie to escort a younglady from the dorms. La dee da.

Briarcliff: An interesting land-mark near White Plains, about 60miles away. Take the Merritt Park-way to the New York side of Green-wich, then on 287 into White Plains.There's a good cartography coursethere, so you'll have no trouble get-ting back. White Plains is not over-whelmingly exciting but New Yorkcan be. (90 minutes). With respectto looks, Briarcliff is among the finestaround, especially if well to doblondes are your dish. Recently con-verted to a four year college, thequality of the students has gone upin recent years, and this is a goodbet for a Toad trip.

Connecticut College: A four-year place in New London, well-stocked with women of considerableintelligence. East on ConnecticutTurnpike via New Haven connector.Fifty minutes and sixty cents laterturn off on Route 1 to New London.The only problem with this schoolis that it is undoubtedly in one ofthe worst towns on the eastern sea-board, loaded with submarinjockeys and the Coast Guard Aca-demy. But possibly because of thabove two problems, these girls arknown to be very hospitable toYalies. Overall, the school and thgirls are attractive and intelligenta sort of the girl-next door type, andif you can get out of New London,chances are you'll have an enjoyabldate.

Mount Holyoke: An enjoyablmuseum in South Hadley, Mass., 7,miles away. Best bet: Interstate 9past Hartford and Route 5 to soutHadley Falls, right onto 202, left 0ll6 into South Hadley. (1)1,\ hours)Unlike the above schools, girls 1\Holyoke are not known for an

quality more than their general de-privation of physical attractiveness.For this reason, and because theymust compete with Smith College,just around the corner, Holyoke girlsare usually very loyal to their dates.Perhaps this is the reason for theclassical Yale assesment of this col-lege, "Smith to bed, Holyoke toWed."

Smith: In no-longer-so-rusticNorthampton, Mass. open to week-end infiltration. Just head for Holy-oke but keep going on Route 5, atend of Interstate, to the North. (1~hours). Although you couldn't tellby the campus, which many peoplemiss when they initially drivethrough Northampton, due to its re-semblance to the town, this is theplace. Stocked with more than her, share of talented girls, Smith offerssomething for everyone, and North-ampton provides many bars in whichto get acquainted. One word of cau-tion: don't attend the fall house par-ties unless you like standing in line.Above' all, remember that classicalYale proverb, "Smith to . . ." etc.

Radcliffe: Go to Cambridge,Mass., then look for Harvard boys.Radcliffe girls, as a rule, won't bewith them but you're close enoughto ask. Don't get into Boston - youmay not get out. (2Jf hours). Yaliesdon't belong here -'- Beware. If thehallenge is irresistable, and you feelyou must, try everything once, gofully armed with all the intellectualammunition at your command, andbe prepared to discuss everythingfrom Spinoza to Vietnam.lleally, there are much better things('0 do on dates.

Sarah Lawrence: A lively spot,1)0 minutes down the Merritt Park-way to Bronxville, N.Y. Great placefor ethnic groups and free thinkersnns sports coats and ties. Sara-Lou'shave an interesting philosophy of lifewhich revolves around individual-

ism and non-conformity. This can bea real advantage when dating oneof these girls, but one should go pre-pared for the unexpected and E:njoyIt.

Vassar: In Poughkeepsie, l~.y.,where people are friendly, pro~per-ous, and able to spot a Yale manmiles away! Follow the Bermettdirections (see above). Take a ~ightin Brewster to route 22, a left on55 at Pawling, and follow your noseto Poughkeepsie. You can't miss thearchitecture. (1 hr. and 45 min.).This school is undoubtedly ODe ofthe most popular among Yalies andfor good reason. Combining gracecharm, style, and talent with attrac~tiveness and personality, Vassar girlsare a good bet for those lonely Situr-day nights. Poughkeepsie, aside frombefriending Vassar, is in New Tork,where the drinking age is but 18,and many bars and dance hUsamong them Club ll5 and Williams:offer many off-campus activitie, forthe Young-at-Heart.

Wellesley: Located in thetown of the same name just this sideof Boston, off the Mass. Trpke.Watch for short turn-off on 16, "'hichtakes you to the front gate. (2)f rrs.)N at considered in the Yale sphe.; ofinfluence, due to its proximit, toHarvard, Wellesley neverthele, isworth the 21f hour trip.
