JULY 2020 H ow could America call itself the world’s greatest democracy, but continue to deny the right to vote to more than half of its citizens? One hundred years ago, American women campaigned for — and won — the right to vote. The largest expansion of voting rights in United States history was a decades-long battle, with opposition from men and women who feared a social revolution. But on August 18, 1920, the right for American women to vote was immortalized with the ratification of the 19 th Amendment. Take a sweeping look back at the women’s suffrage movement in One Woman, One Vote (Wednesday, July 1 at 9pm), from Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s electrifying call to arms at the 1848 Seneca Falls convention, to the last no-holds-barred fight in 1920. American Experience brings to light the unsung heroes of the movement in two-part series The Vote (Wednesdays, July 8 & 15 at 9pm). “The lengths to which women had to go in their pursuit of the ballot will likely come as a surprise to most viewers,” said writer, director and producer Michelle Ferrari. “How many people are aware that suffragists were the first Americans to picket the White House? That those women were jailed, went on hunger strikes and were force-fed by authorities? And that the techniques of non-violent civil disobedience, which we usually associate with the Civil Rights Movement, were employed first by women fighting for the right to vote?” Dive further into the histories of pioneering women in American politics with American Masters — Unladylike2020: The Changemakers (Wednesday, July 29 at 9pm), including Jeanette Rankin, the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress; Mary Church Terrell, a co-founder of the NAACP; Jovita Idar, a journalist and president of the first Mexican American women’s civil rights organization; and Zitkála-Šá, also known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, who lobbied for U.S. citizenship, voting rights, and sovereignty for American Indians a century ago. JULY 2020

How could America call itself the world’s greatest democracy, but continue to deny the right to vote to more than half of its citizens?

One hundred years ago, American women campaigned for — and won — the right to vote. The largest expansion of voting rights in United States history was a decades-long battle, with opposition from men and women who feared a social revolution. But on August 18, 1920, the right for American women to vote was immortalized with the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

And that the techniques of non-violent civil disobedience, which we usually associate with the Civil Rights Movement, were employed first by women fighting for the right to vote?”

Dive further into the histories of pioneering women in American politics with American Masters — Unladylike2020: The Changemakers (Wednesday, July 29 at 9pm), including Jeanette Rankin, the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress; Mary Church Terrell, a co-founder of the NAACP; Jovita Idar, a journalist and president of the first Mexican American women’s civil rights organization; and Zitkála-Šá, also known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, who lobbied for U.S. citizenship, voting rights, and sovereignty for American Indians a century ago.CO

On Wednesday, July 29, 1981, 20-year-old Lady Diana

Spencer married HRH Prince Charles in the fairytale wedding of the century, lifting the spirits of the UK during a turbulent time. Three quarters of a billion people watch around the world. But all wasn’t as perfect as it seemed. Compare what the jubilant public saw to the doubt, fear and heartbreak suffered privately by two individuals propelled by a fate they couldn’t control.
