MEET THE COACHING STAFFS: Gustavus Head Coach Mike Carroll is in his 13th season at the helm for the Gusties. He has compiled an overall record of 269-64-20 in 13 seasons on the bench and has the most coaching victories in the history of the program. Carroll, an Edina, Minn. native, competed in hockey and baseball at Minnesota State University-Mankato. After graduating with a degree in municipal recreation in 1982, Carroll played professional baseball in the Montreal Expos organization for two years.

Carroll is assisted by Steve Carroll (MSU-Mankato ‘81) - named one of the 10 greatest Mavericks in their men’s hockey program; Kirstin Peterson (Gustavus ‘11), a three-time All-American for the Gustavus women’s hockey program from 2008-11; and Matt Carroll, Mike’s son.

Michelle McAteer (Minnesota-Duluth ‘03), who earned three NCAA national titles as a women’s hockey player at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and another as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs, is in her second season at the helm for the Auggies. McAteer is the second head coach in the history of Augsburg’s women’s hockey program, replacing Jill Pohtilla, who announced her resignation in March 2010 after guiding the team through the first 15 seasons of its history.

McAteer is assisted by Sanya Sandahl (Cornell ‘03), Jody Horak (University of Minnesota ‘05) and Jessica Tyra(University of Wisconsin-Superior ‘11).

ABOUT AUGSBURG: Augsburg is in the process of turning its women’s hockey program in the right direction after suffering six-consecutive losing seasons, including a forgetful campaign last year that saw the Auggies finish last in the MIAC at 1-16-1 in league play and 3-19-1 overall. Augsburg hasn’t seen a winning season since 2004-05 when it placed fourth in the MIAC at 10-7-1 and 13-10-3 overall. The best season for the Auggies was 1999-2000 when they were MIAC Playoff Champions and AWCHA Division III National Tournament runner-up.

This season, the Auggies have already surpassed last year’s win total after defeating Finlandia 5-2 on Oct. 30, St. Catherine 3-1 on Nov. 11 and Saint Benedict 5-4 on Nov. 18. Augsburg is led by Rachel Hennessy with a MIAC-high nine goals and two assists for 11 points. Hennessy is tied with Gustavus’ Carolyn Draayer for most goals in the conference this year. Three Auggies are tied for the team-high in assists with four each - Jessica Larkin, Casey Miller and Sara Rajewsky.

In the nets for the Auggies is Briana Schulz who has started in all three victories. She has allowed 10 goals (2.59 goals against average) with 129 saves (.928 save percentage) in 231:22 between the pipes.

17 AND COUNTING: The Gusties hold the all-time series record 23-8 against Augsburg, including 17 consecutive victories. The last time the Auggies defeated the Black and Gold was Dec. 6, 2002 in Minneapolis by a score of 1-0.

FLAVOR OF THE MONTH: First-year forward Carolyn Draayer was selected by the Office of Sports Information as Female Student-Athlete of the Month for November. The Deephaven, Minn. native became the first player in Gustavus women’s hockey history to score a goal in each of the first six games of the season after scoring a MIAC-leading nine goals with two assists for 11 points. Draayer also leads the conference in game-winning goals with three and freshman scoring, averaging 1.83 points per game.

AUGGIE KILLERS: Gustavus has 12 players on its roster who have recorded a combined 47 points against Augsburg throughout their careers. Allie Schwab leads the team with nine-career points against the Auggies in six games. She has seven goals and two assists. Goalie Danielle Justice has a perfect 4-0-0 record with a goals against average of 0.200.

LAST SEASON: The Gusties swept the Auggies in the regular season series by a combined score of 14-to-1. Gustavus played host in game one and came away with a 6-0 shutout at Don Robert Ice Rink. The following day, the Gusties cruised to an 8-1 victory in Minneapolis.

BEST START EVER: The Gustavus women’s hockey team has tied its best start in its 15-year history at 6-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the MIAC. Last year, the Gusties started 6-0-0 but lost the ensuing game 1-0 to the University of St. Thomas.

POLL POSITION: Six games into the 2011-12 campaign and without a blemish on their record, the Gusties actually fell one position to No. 7 in the national rankings according to the latest United States College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) poll.

ONE GRAND: Senior goalie Danielle Justice has etched her name all over the Gustavus women’s hockey record book throughout her four seasons wearing the black and gold. Among goalies with at least 500 minutes, the Alexandria, Minn. native holds the program record for most minutes in goal (3908:56), save percentage (.936) and wins (49). And when Justice tallied her 13th save on Nov. 18 in a 5-3 win over St. Thomas, she became the first player in program history to record 1,000 career saves.
