Women's health presents a broad range of issues for GPs to consider. The ability of the GP to accurately investigate, diagnose and manage health issues in women is essential.
GPs play a crucial role in advocating patient awareness about breast health and cancer risk factors. This workshop will discuss screening, density, genetics and new testing modalities.
The incidence of eating disorders is increasing. It is vital for GPs to identify features in a patient with disordered eating. Early detection and treatment reduces morbidity and mortality, so early intervention is vital. This session aims to improve GPs understanding of symptoms and signs of an eating disorder and how to improve communication with their patients.
Gynaecological problems present frequently to general practice and are varied. Our specialists will discuss common and unusual presentations, including current investigation and management. Case study discussion will provide attendees with the opportunity to share challenging presentations.
The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education has identified a worrying increase in the prevalence of alcohol dependence in women. This session will also cover the GPs approach to addressing and managing this problem.
Long acting reversible contraceptives are an effective measure in birth control, the insertion and removal of which is quick and relatively simple. However, not all GPs are competent. This training session will increase your confidence in performing this procedure competently.
Learning outcomes
1. Recognise the role of the GP in providing a safe and effective management plan for patients presenting with a breast symptom.
2. Outline the screening tools used to diagnose patients with an eating disorder and support them through treatment pathways.
3. Outline current treatment of gynaecological conditions that present to general practice and identify patients that require referral.
4. Develop strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of female patients with alcohol dependence.
5. Demonstrate competence in the insertion and removal of the Implanon device.
