The Hawks have cut down Norfolk State, Villa- nova, Wagner and Mount St. Mary’s in their last four games, while the Blackbirds bounced back from a Saturday loss at Sacred Heart to defeat Quinnipiac Monday. LAST TIME OUT Abby Martin compiled her second double-double of the season with 22 points and a season-high 14 rebounds as the Hawks defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 59-52, Monday night at the MAC. Alysha Womack added a season-high 17 points and Betsy Gadziala contributed nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Led by Womack and Gadziala, the MU bench scored a season-high 29 points. SCOUTING THE LIU BROOKLYN BLACKBIRDS The Blackbirds (13-3, 2-2 NEC) are led by Ashley Palmer, who’s averaged a league-high 20.2 points per game to go along with 8.1 rebounds per game. Ebony Davis has also contributed 9.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, while Kiara Evans has chipped in 8.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Led by Krystal Wells’ 44.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc, the Blackbirds lead the NEC in three-point shooting at 35.1 percent. LIU Brooklyn also leads the league in rebounding defense (33.7 rpg.) and rebounding margin (+6.2), and is second in scoring defense (57.4 ppg.), scoring margin (+7.0), field-goal percentage (.423) and three-point field-goal percentage defense (.270). The Monmouth University women’s basketball team takes a season-best four-game winning streak into its Northeast Conference match-up with Long Island Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn. The Hawks have cut down Norfolk State, Villa-nova, Wagner and Mount St. Mary’s in their last four games, while the Blackbirds bounced back from a Saturday loss at Sacred Heart to defeat Quinnipiac Monday. Last time OutAbby Martin compiled her second double-double of the season with 22 points and a season-high 14 rebounds as the Hawks defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 59-52, Monday night at the MAC. Alysha Womack added a season-high 17 points and Betsy Gadziala contributed nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Martin has shot 55.4 percent (41-74) during the span. She was named to the Hawk Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game against Norfolk State and Villanova. Martin scored the last six points against Villanova as the Hawks held on for the title. She also poured in 22 points and 14 rebounds against Mount St. Mary’s.

mR. BeLDiNG aPPROVeDAlexis “A.C.” Canady has been a catalyst in the Hawks’ seven victories this season. The senior point guard has contributed 10.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in the Hawks’ wins against Lehigh, Lafayette, Saint Peter’s, Norfolk State, Villanova, Wagner and Mount St. Mary’s.

tHuNDeR fROm DOWN uNDeRChevannahPaalvastscoredindoublefiguresinthreestraightgamesagainstNorfolkState, Villanova and Wagner - all Monmouth victories - after establishing a previ-ous season high of eight points. Paalvast averaged a team-high 13.0 points per game during the Hawk Holiday Classic. She doubled her previous season high with 16 points, also eclipsing her previous career high of 11 points, in a 69-62 victory over Norfolk State on Dec. 29. She then connected for 10 points, including several clutch shots against Villanova on Dec. 30. She also blocked three shots on the two-day tournament. The New Zealand native then scored 10 points against Wagner on Jan. 7. Paalvast’s previous season high of eight points came at East Carolina, while her previous career high of 11 points came last season against Quinnipiac.

BaLaNceD attackSix Hawks scored at least eight points in Monmouth’s 65-42 victory over Wagner on Jan. 7. Alexis Canady led the way with 15 points, while Chevannah Paalvast added 10 points. Gadziala scored 11 points and added six rebounds in 30 minutes to help the Hawks to a 75-73 victory over Lehigh on Nov. 25, before adding a career-high 14 points and six rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting against Lafayette on Nov. 27. Gadziala matched her career-highs of 14 points and six rebounds on 6-of-11 shooting at Robert Morris on Dec. 3, before setting a new career best with eight rebounds against Winthrop. On Dec. 17, Gadziala scored a career-high 16 points at Manhattan.

The Preseason All-NEC Team honoree has averaged 12.4 points per game in her career, en route to more than 800 points.

DOuBLe-DOuBLe DuOAbby Martin and Alexis Canady each compiled double-doubles in the Hawks’ 73-64 victory over Saint Peter’s on Dec. 10. Martin had 21 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, while Canady added 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. The double-doubleswerethefirstoftheseasonfortheHawks.Forhereffort,Martinwasnamedthe Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week.

BaLL HaWksLed by 12 rebounds apiece from Abby Martin and Alexis Canady, and nine more from Gena Broadus, MU grabbed a season-high 52 boards against Saint Peter’s. The Hawks outrebounded the Peahens by 14 boards, a season-best rebounding margin.

BROaDus ON tHe BOaRDsGena Broadus grabbed a season-high nine rebounds three times in a recent four-game span. She started the stretch at East Carolina, and matched the total two games later at Saint Francis (Pa.). Once again, Broadus grabbed nine boards against Saint Peter’s. Broadus’ career high is 12, established Nov. 21, 2010, at Marquette.

mY faVORite maRtiNAbby Martin scored a season-high 23 points, including the game-winning putback with25secondsleftinregulation,intheHawks’firstwinoftheseason,Nov.25against Lehigh. Martin also added eight rebounds.

WOmack WiNs aNOtHeRFor the second straight year, junior Alysha Womack was named to the Preseason All-NEC Team. A two-time All-NEC Second Team selection, Womack was named the 2010 NEC Rookie of the Year. She averaged a team-high 12.5 points per game (8th-NEC)andmade1.64three-pointfieldgoalspergame,goodforninthintheNEC.

LOOk WHO’s BackThe Hawks return 10 of their top 11 scorers from a year ago, in addition to a difference-maker in the middle who sat out the year. Alysha Womack returns as the team’s top scorer from 2010-11, while third-leading scorer (9.7 ppg.) and leading rebounder (7.0) Abby Martin also returns to the fold. Alexis Canady returns to run the point in her senior season after contributing 8.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and nearly three assists per game. Rugged forward Gena Broadus also returns, giving the Hawks another interior option, having chipped in 4.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in 2010-11. With the likes of Adriana Allen, Betsy Gadziala, Chanel Gomez, Chevannah Paalvast, Shira Shecht, Gabby Singer and Carly Thibault also returning, the Hawks have a strong foundation with which to build upon in 2011-12.

BaLLiN’ Outta cONtROLAbby Martin was named to the 2011 Northeast Conference Tournament All-Tournament Team after averaging 19.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game during MU’sruntothefinal.Sheshot57.8%fromthefield,addingsixblocksandfourstealsinthetournament.IntheHawks’quarterfinalwinoverQuinnipiac,Martinregisteredherfifthdouble-doubleoftheyearwithacareer-high25pointsand11rebounds.AgainstRobertMorrisinthesemifinals,shenetted15points,grabbedseven boards and set another career high with three blocks.

DOiNG tHe JOB WitH DefeNseTheMonmouthwomen’sbasketballteamrankedfirstintheNortheastConference,and 31st in the NCAA, in scoring defense last season, allowing 55.7 points per game, and only 52.1 points per contest in league games. In conference play, the Hawks limited their opponents to 24.2% shooting from three-point range, and forced an average of 18.5 turnovers per NEC contest.

“if YOu’Re NOt fiRst, YOu’Re Last.”In the Monmouth women’s basketball team’s 21 regular season wins in 2010-11, the Hawks outscored their opponents by almost 13 points per game. MU shot 34.6% from three-point range in its wins, hitting 140-of-405 from beyond the arc, while limiting the opposition to 59-of-246 from distance (24.0%). In those wins, the Blue and White got off to fast starts, outscoring its opponents, 695-517 (33.0 ppg-24.6ppgonaverage)inthefirsthalf.

Nec maRkMonmouth University won its 200th Northeast Conference game on February 21, 2005, when the Hawks defeated Wagner, 71-58. MU has won double-digit NEC games 10 years in a row, with their most league wins coming in back-to-back unbeaten seasons in league play (16-0) in 1986-87 and 1987-88 under coach Mickey McGlade.
