UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

Setting The SceneUniversity of Massachusetts women’s basketball is back at the Mullins Center to host the inaugural UMass Thanksgiving Classic from Nov. 24-25. The Minutewomen will welcome Houston, Liberty and in-state foe Northeastern for the two-day event, which features back-to-back games each day. Following the 1 p.m. UMass-Northeastern game on Fri., Nov. 24, Liberty and Houston will square off in a 3 p.m. tilt. On Sat., Nov. 25, Houston and Northeastern will open the day at 11 a.m. to precede UMass’ 1 p.m. rendezvous with Liberty. Recap In A MinuteUMass enters the Thanksgiving holiday on the heels of a pair of tough setbacks in North Dakota. The Minutewomen were downed, 82-70, by North Dakota State on Fri., Nov. 17 after NDSU and Sarah Jacobson shot lights out from three-point range, despite 20-plus point performances by Genesis Rivera and Bre Hampton-Bey. Maggie Mulligan recorded her 22nd career double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) in the loss. It was a difficult shooting day for the Minutewomen at North Dakota on Sun., Nov. 19. UND held UMass under 30 percent from the field including a 2-for-11 (18.2 percent) clip from downtown. In spite of forcing 18 Fighting Hawks turnovers, UMass could not counter UND’s four double-figure scorers as well as a 19-2 run in the fourth quarter en route to the 82-52 result. Minutewomen Gear Up For Pair Of TournamentsIncluding the Thanksgiving Classic, Massachusetts will partake in two tournaments in as many weeks. Next weekend as part of a trip to Texas, the Minutewomen will play in the UTRGV Battle on the Border in Edinburg, Texas. In the latter event, UMass will face host UTRGV on Fri., Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time and Mississippi Valley State on Sat., Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

Over The Century MarkIn recording a 111-45 triumph over Maine-Fort Kent on Nov. 10, UMass surpassed the 100-point mark for the first time since Dec. 13, 1980 when the squad defeated Vermont, 105-74. Additionally, the UMFK result reset a program record for largest margin of victory (65), which previously stood at 51. UMass Adds Five During Early Signing PeriodUniversity of Massachusetts women’s basketball and head coach Tory Verdi welcomed five new members to the program on Mon., Nov. 13, as Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Connecticut), Madison Lowery (Virginia Beach, Virginia), Asia McCoy (Lawrenceville, Georgia), Jessica Nelson (Buford, Georgia) and Destiny Philoxy (Queens, New York) signed their respective National Letters of Intent. Regarded as one of the highest-caliber classes in program history, the group was ranked No. 57 nationally by Blue Star Basketball as well as No. 62 in the country by PASS. Leidel, Mulligan Collect A-10 Preseason RecognitionHailey Leidel and Maggie Mulligan received Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team as announced by the league office on Oct. 23. Leidel was placed on the All-Conference Second Team, while Mulligan earned herself a spot on the All-Conference Third Team. HEAD COACH TORY VERDISECOND SEASON AT UMASS // SIXTH SEASON OVERALL // KEENE STATE COLLEGE ‘96

New England native and 20-year coaching veteran Tory Verdi was named the 11th wom-en’s basketball head coach at the University of Massachusetts on April 9, 2016.

Verdi’s Minutewomen made tremendous strides during the 2016-17 campaign, his first at the helm, in spite of a limited roster size. Then-freshman Hailey Leidel was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, while then-

junior Maggie Mulligan was one of the most improved players in the league with 20 double-doubles.

Under Verdi’s guidance, Leidel ranked as the No. 2 scoring freshman in the NCAA and ranked fourth overall in scoring among all A-10 play-ers. Mulligan ranked 11th overall in scoring and second in the league in rebounding.

“This is a truly exciting time for our women’s basketball program with the addition of Tory Verdi as our head coach,” Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford said upon Verdi’s hiring. “Tory has a tremendous track record of success that will be a real asset for our program as we compete for Atlantic 10 Championships. His enthusiasm for building a winning culture that promotes success in the classroom, in competition and in the com-munity makes him a great fit for the University of Massachusetts.”

Verdi arrived in Amherst with a head coaching record of 72-61 after spending four seasons at Eastern Michigan University. His teams advanced to the 2015 and 2016 Women’s National Invitation Tournament, including a Round of 16 appearance, and the Mid-American Conference Championship Game in 2015.

An experienced coach at both the colle-giate and professional levels, Verdi-coached teams have advanced to postseason play 13 of the last 16 seasons since 2001-02. Arriving in Ypsilanti for the 2012-13 campaign, he took an 8-22 squad to a record of 24-13 in 2014-15 and 22-12 in 2015-16. He also secured the MAC’s No. 1 recruiting class twice during his tenure.

“I am thrilled to be the head coach at UMass,” Verdi said. “I knew the day that I stepped on campus that the University of Massachusetts was a special place. UMass women’s basketball has all of the elements to build a championship-caliber program and provide an outstanding student-athlete expe-rience. I am excited to take this program to the next level.”

Under Verdi, the 2015-16 MAC West Division preseason favorite Eagles made their mark in the EMU record books. Defensively, the squad totaled the fourth-most rebounds in a single season (1,364), while the team ranks seventh all-time in blocks (92) and third in steals (386).

EMU’s high-tempo offense poured in 2,445 points, the third-most in a single season in school history, along with dishing out 435 assists, good for seventh-most. Additionally, the Eagles converted 218 three-pointers, rank-ing fourth all-time and marking the third con-

secutive season in which EMU has made 200 or more triples.

A large part Verdi’s 2014-15 record-setting performance came from the Eagles late run during the regular season and into postseason play. EMU finished the regular season with wins in its final four games, while also winning seven of its last eight. The Eagles appeared in eight post-season games, winning six of them. The Eagles advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship, winning four-of-five MAC Tournament games, before advancing to the Sweet 16 of the 2015 Postseason WNIT. The Eagles rewrote the EMU record book with 124 different all-time top performances, including the most points in a season (2,549), field goals made (936), rebounds (1,539) and three-pointers made (223).

Verdi spent the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons as the top assistant at the University of Kansas. The Jayhawks advanced to the 2012 NCAA Sweet Sixteen and the 2011 WNIT Second Round.

Prior to his arrival in Lawrence, Verdi was an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska for five seasons (2005-10). The Huskers advanced to the postseason every year Verdi served on staff in Lincoln and collected the Big 12 Regular-Season Championship in 2009-10 with a 16-0 confer-ence record.

A native of New Britain, Connecticut, Verdi earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Keene State College in 1996 and added a master’s degree in computer technology from the University of Hartford in 2003. He and his wife, Heather, are parents to Tyler, Avery and Bradyn. Verdi was inducted into the New Britain Sports Hall of Fame on April 24, 2016.

A veteran collegiate coach, Danny Hughes was named to Tory Verdi’s staff in May 2016, being elevated to the position of associate head coach prior to the 2017-18 season. Hughes arrived in Amherst after spending the previous seven years at SMU.

His previous Division I stops also include St. John’s (2008-09) and the University of

Houston (2005-08). He was interim head coach at UH for the 2007-08 season.

During Hughes’ time at SMU, he was part of a staff that helped lead the Mustangs to back-to-back postseason appearances after a two-year stretch of sub-.500 records. SMU won the 2012-13 Conference USA Championship with C-USA Player of the Year Keena Mays.

While an assistant for the Red Storm in 2008-09, he helped guide the team to the third round of the WNIT, marking just the second time in program history St. John’s had advanced that far. Hughes’ duties in-cluded working with the guards, and he was able to help shooting guard Monique McLean garner an All-Big East second-team selection.

Before going to St. John’s, Hughes spent three seasons at Houston. While with the Cougars, he was responsible for all aspects of recruit-ing while also overseeing compliance, fundraising, practice and game preparation, as well as coordination of all scouting reports.

During the 2008 season, Hughes served as the program’s interim head coach, leading Houston to a 15-16 mark, its best record in three years. Hughes took the reins of the team only nine days before the start of the season, after UH head coach Joe Curl took a leave of absence for health reasons.

During his tenure as head coach, the Cougars ran off an eight-game consecutive conference win streak, their longest since 2004. Hughes guided the Cougars to a first-round bye in the Conference-USA tourna-ment, its first in three years.

Prior to Houston, Hughes was an assistant at Trinity Valley Community College for five years, Hughes handled recruiting duties as well as over-seeing the team’s academic progress. While coaching TVCC, the team

made the Region XIV playoffs three times and included the top junior college player in America in 2001.

From 1992-2000, Hughes served as athletic director and men’s bas-ketball coach at Cross Roads High School in his hometown of Malakoff, Texas. He led his squad to a 24-6 record and a state playoff appearance in his first season at the helm. His coaching record was 123-89 and his success as athletic director enabled Hughes to be the first inductee in the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2001.

During Hughes’ second trip to Trinity Valley from 1991-92 he worked with the men’s squad. Hughes worked with guards and post players while handling recruiting responsibilities for the state of Texas during the 1991-92 season.

Hughes began his coaching career at Sam Houston State University as a graduate assistant from 1990-91. During his time with the Bearkats, he worked with the guards and wings while assisting with scouting and recruiting duties.

A former standout player at TCU, Hughes was one of the most prolific three-point shooters in school history. In two seasons (1987-89), Hughes shot 45 percent (108-240) from behind the arc, a mark that ranks third on the Horned Frogs’ career list. His single-season best of 45.2 percent (70-155) during the 1988-89 campaign ranks second on TCU’s single-season chart.

The two-year starter at shooting guard was a two-time winner of the Jim Killingsworth MVP award, given to the top men’s basketball player that season.

Prior to his arrival at TCU, Hughes was an all-region and all-league player at Trinity Valley Community College, where he helped lead his team to a 44-15 record from 1985-87. During his sophomore season, he earned MVP honors while averaging 14.6 points and 6.4 assists per game. He was also selected to play on the National Junior College All-Star Team, comprised of the top-12 junior college players in the country. In August of 2010, Hughes was elected to TVCC’s Hall of Fame.

Hughes is married to Quinn Tedder-Hughes and has two daughters, Griffin and Grayson.

University of Massachusetts women’s basketball head coach Tory Verdi announced on May 31, 2017, the addition of Candice Finley as assistant coach and recruiting co-ordinator. The addition of Finley reunited the duo after they worked together for four years at Eastern Michigan.

“I’m so excited to announce that we have added Candice to our staff,” said Verdi. “Candice is one of the best re-cruiters in the women’s game. I have seen her work first hand at Eastern Michigan where she garnered a top 50 recruiting class in the country and back-to-back top recruiting classes in the Mid-American Conference.”

Along with her four years at EMU, Finley also spent four seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater Eastern Kentucky and a season coaching at Southern Connecticut State University.

“I am very happy to be back working under coach Verdi and even more excited about the direction the UMass women’s basketball program is heading,” said Finley. “I am honored to be part of such an amazing staff and am excited for the opportunity to share some of my experience with the outstanding young women in our program. I believe a lot of the pieces are in place for us to be extremely competitive in the Atlantic 10.”

In her time alongside Verdi at Eastern Michigan, Finley was a major component in the rebuilding of the Eagles’ program which included a pair of trips to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), including a Round of 16 appearance, and the Mid-American Conference finals in 2015.

Along with coaching the post players, she served as the recruiting coordinator and was key in twice securing the No. 1 recruiting classes among the Mid-American Conference.

On the court, Finley’s post players saw continued growth and progres-sion with several more than doubling their offensive output from previous seasons.

At Eastern Kentucky, Finley was part of a staff that was charged with rebuilding her alma mater in the ultra competitive Ohio Valley Confer-ence. While in Richmond, Ky., she was responsible for overseeing

academics, organizing community service projects and working with the team’s post players.

Finley began her collegiate coaching career when she joined South-ern Connecticut State University for the 2007-08 season. She helped SCSU continue its winning tradition as the team posted the program’s seventh-consecutive winning season that year.

Before embarking on a collegiate coaching career, Finley spent two seasons as the assistant girls basketball coach and two years as the head girls basketball coach at Romulus High School in Romulus, Mich. She helped lead Romulus to a Mega White Division championship in 2004 and a pair of district titles in 2004 and 2007. In 2007, Finley was named Downriver Coach of the Year.

She has also served as a coach with the Michigan Crossover AAU/Nike Travel Team program helping the group win two Michigan AAU state titles.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from EKU in 2002, Finley played professionally in Luxembourg for a season before returning to serve as an assistant at Romulus High School.

Finley was a three-year starter for the Lady Colonels from 1997 to 2001. She concluded her career with more than 1,000 points, nearly 500 rebounds and more than 100 steals. She earned second team all-confer-ence honors after leading Eastern in scoring (13 ppg) and rebounding (5.5 rpg) her senior season. She finished her collegiate career having made 45.4 percent of her shots from the field. She stands 19th on EKU’s all-time scoring list.

In addition to her 1998 OVC regular-season championship, the Detroit, Mich., native won three state titles as a player at Bishop Borgess High School.

A dynamic young coach, Candice Walker enters her third season with the UMass women’s basketball program after be-ing announced as an assistant coach for Tory Verdi’s staff in May 2016. Prior to her elevation to assistant coach, she spent the 2015-16 campaign as the program’s director of operations.

In her role as the director of operations, Walker was charged with all facets of program organization including daily operations, travel, practice preparation and film analysis.

Before her time with UMass, Walker spent the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons as an assistant coach at Wilmington University (Del.). She also coached with Point Guard College after graduating from Loyola Univer-sity (Md.) in 2013.

While at Loyola, Walker earned a bachelor’s degree in 2011 before

she attended graduate school while competing in 117 games for the program, the sixth-most by any student-athlete in Loyola women’s bas-ketball history. She led all Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rookies in points and assists as a freshman during the 2007-08 campaign en route to MAAC All-Rookie Team honors; however, injuries derailed her 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. She was granted a medical hardship waiver to re-turn for a sixth season and closed out her career while working towards a Master of Arts degree in 2012-13.
