Dear Friends, It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 Women’s Auxiliary Fall Gala. Tonight we have the special opportunity to recognize two wonderful individuals.

We are pleased to be honoring Kenneth I. Wirfel with the Arthur and Gladys Lunin Humanitarian Award, and Richard D. Becker with the Louis Lotstein Award for Distinguished Service. Ken, is an active community member in Connecticut and New York. He joined the Jewish Senior Services Board of Directors in 2009 and served on the Professional Services, Finance and Executive Committees before serving as Chairperson, shortly after the transition from Jefferson Street into the new Harry and Jeanette Weinberg campus on Park Avenue. Dick Becker has worked alongside Jewish Senior Services for almost four decades as a dedicated board member, committee member and family member. We applaud, thank and congratulate them and are thrilled that they lent their energy, creativity and leadership to our organization and beyond.

The success of tonight’s event is the result of a collective effort of many. Lydia Gerard, Vanessa Rosenberg, Debby Hiller, Barbara Kauders, Ellen Hyde Phillips and the entire Women’s Auxiliary Board have worked for months on this special evening. We thank the Women’s Auxiliary for sponsoring this annual Gala and thank all of you for your participation and partnership in enhancing the mission of Jewish Senior Services.

It has been another exciting year and a time of tremendous growth and expansion of our organization and our mission. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus on Park Avenue, celebrated its third anniversary in June. Our state-of-the-art senior services campus is the first and only Household Model nursing home in Connecticut. This design is the result of years of research and a vision to be the absolute best and most comprehensive senior care provider in Southern Connecticut, as well as a resource for the broader community. Thanks to the generosity of our incredible community for allowing us to bring together the future of long term care, assisted living, community services, intergenerational activities, the fitness center, and the community-at-large, including the Federation for Jewish Philanthropy of Upper Fairfield County, in one place that is truly Home for all of us.

Once again, we thank all of you who have helped to make not only this evening a success, but have made Jewish Senior Services the premier organization it is today. We are incredibly grateful to your commitment and generosity. The best is yet to come!

Best wishes,

A lan S. P hillips Andrew H. BanoffChairperson President & CEO

Dear Friends, It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 Fall Gala, an evening of celebration and tribute. We

are honored to co-chair this important event on behalf of the Women’s Auxiliary and share the

evening with all of you. The Fall Gala raises significant funds to enhance the lives of the Residents

and clients of Jewish Senior Services directly through enriching programs and services. We are very

grateful for your generosity.

Tonight we pay tribute to two deserving individuals, Ken Wirfel and Dick Becker. Congratulations

to you both!

We want to thank the Fall Gala Committee who donated their time and energy to make this event

a success. We have been meeting for months to plan this event and it has been a creative and

collaborative effort. We would like to give a special thank you to Ruth Ridgeway of Ruth Ridgeway

Designs, for the beautiful décor that makes the evening beautiful.

We want to also thank our immediate past Co-Presidents, Debby Hiller and Barbara Kauders, and

new President, Ellen Hyde Phillips, who have all provided us with incredible support, dedication

and leadership.

We know you will be entertained and amused by the witty and innovative humor of Steven Scott.

We also have an exciting silent auction this evening with many great opportunities to support the

Women’s Auxiliary, so please bid and then bid again!

Enjoy your evening!

Page 4: Women’s Auxiliary of Jewish Senior Services Fall Gala€¦ · The Fall Gala raises significant funds to enhance the lives of the Residents and clients of Jewish Senior Services

His tenure as Chairperson has been both exhilarating and challenging. He stepped up into the position shortly after the transition from Jefferson Street into our beautiful new Harry and Jeanette Weinberg campus on Park Avenue. Jewish Senior Services and its staff faced the challenges of assisting our Residents in the adjustment to their new home while maintaining throughout this period the excellence of our care and navigating the deep changes in our long term business model. Partnering with Andrew Banoff and a strong and committed Board of Directors, Ken successfully plotted the course and has ably guided the organization toward a bright future for all it continues to do and hopes to do in the future.

Ken and June live in Westport with three handsome labrador retrievers. They have two adult children. Mikhaila, their older daughter, currently enjoys living in a residential community for adults with developmental disabilities. Their younger daughter, Hannah, is the Head Riding Instructor and a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor at New Canaan Mounted Troop in New Canaan. Hannah’s husband, George, is a doctoral candidate in Applied Mathematics at Stony Brook University.

Kenneth I. Wirfel is indeed a pillar of our community. We thank him and congratulate him on this extremely well-deserved award.

a r t h u r a n d g l a d y s l u n i n h u m a n i t a r i a n a w a r d

Kenneth I. WirfelJewish Senior Services is proud to present the Arthur and Gladys Lunin Humanitarian Award to Ken Wirfel this evening honoring his dedication to excellence within the entire community.

This award was created to recognize outstanding public and community service as exemplified by the good works of Arthur and Gladys Lunin. Any individual who by his/her sacrifice, effort and service to the Fairfield County Community deserves to be recognized and held up as an example for others to follow. Of special merit are those individuals who have furthered the cause of justice, fostered understanding between Jews and non-Jews and made voluntary and significant efforts to care for those unable to care for themselves.

Ken practiced law for over 40 years in New York City. His early years were spent as a trial lawyer with The Legal Aid Society and then as a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York. His major cases included the prosecution of a Fortune 500 company on tax conspiracy and a group of Chicago Police officers on drug smuggling charges.

Ken’s proudest achievement was, with his wife June Eichbaum, the co-founding of Cooke School, a school in Manhattan for children with Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. Their daughter was one of the first seven students to attend the school. Ken went on to serve as Chairman or Vice Chairman of the school for 25 years and continues on as a Trustee. Today, Cooke School is in the midst of constructing a new 6,700 square foot building near Mt. Sinai Hospital and will open its doors to over 300 students in September, 2020.

Locally in Westport, Ken helped organize the Minute Man Hill Special Taxing District and served as its President for over 20 years. He stepped down from that role when, in 2007, he was elected as a Member of the Westport Board of Finance, just in time to deal with the oncoming fiscal crisis.

Ken was introduced to The Jewish Home when June’s father, Ulryk Eichbaum, came to reside in our skilled nursing facility. He visited regularly and grew to know the organization and staff intimately.Shortly after Ulryk’s passing in 2009, Ken joined our Board of Directors. He served on the Professional Services, Finance and Executive Committees before serving as our 22nd Chairperson from 2016-2019.

“I joined The Jewish Home Board just over 10 years ago. June’s Dad, a long-time Resident of the Home, had recently passed away and I was initially reluctant to make the commitment of time and energy that I thought the position would entail. The more I thought about it though, I realized the organization needed members of the community to step up and support this wonderful institution. Besides, I knew a few board members and thought they were all terrific people who I would enjoy working with in this endeavor.

I soon was to join a group of more than 30 people from throughout Fairfield County. One of my earliest memories was taking a trip north to Newbridge on the Charles for a site visit to a brand new and magnificent continuing care community, then under development by the Jewish community in Boston. I accompanied the late Milt Schubin, then Board Chairperson, and more than a dozen board members. Our board was then in the early stages of planning

Page 5: Women’s Auxiliary of Jewish Senior Services Fall Gala€¦ · The Fall Gala raises significant funds to enhance the lives of the Residents and clients of Jewish Senior Services

for and envisioning a new home for our senior community. Other site visits were to follow in the following months.

Almost three and a half years ago, our dream was realized and we moved into our new campus on Park Avenue. Residents, staff members, family and board members were all delighted with what we had together achieved. We knew we had taken a major step in securing a program that would serve seniors’ needs for decades to come.

But the path forward was not always easy. In our first years in the new campus, we, as a board, have had to grapple with the uncertainty of government funding, and have had to meld our successful programs into new business models which would assure their continued success and vitality. I, no we, have been blessed with an exceptional board. I look around this room and I see bankers, lawyers, doctors, accountants, and business people, among us, all who have made singular contributions toward achieving these goals. You are not just my colleagues, you have become dear friends. I thank you for all you have done, and, hopefully, what you will continue to do for our families, friends, and neighbors.”

— Ken Wirfel

“Ken joined our Jewish Senior Services community as a family member, and has embraced every aspect of our organization – including his

roles on the Board of Directors. I am personally grateful for his leadership and support during these first historic years on the

new campus. He does so much for so many organizations, and we are proud to be able to honor him with this prestigious award.”

Andrew H. Banoff President & CEO Jewish Senior Services

About our organization and our mission…The Women’s Auxiliary undertook the challenge to create a place for seniors in our community in 1968. They were instrumental

in building The Jewish Home for the Elderly, now called Jewish Senior Services and with the opening of our new campus in 2016.

The overriding mission of the Women’s Auxiliary is to nurture, enhance, and support quality of life initiatives for the Residents

and clients that we serve. The Auxiliary fulfills this mission by augmenting services, programs and facilities provided by Jewish

Senior Services.

Hundreds of women have been involved as members of the Board of Directors during its existence. Thousands of women have

been a part of our success through Auxiliary membership, volunteerism, and financially supporting and participating in our

programs and events. It is through their dedication that the Auxiliary has raised over five million dollars to accomplish our

mission. We are incredibly proud of our contributions and knowing that we make a daily difference in the lives of the Residents

and clients.

Since 1973, Jewish Senior Services has provided unparalleled care for Residents, and clients receiving short term rehabilitation

at the Goldstein Rehabilitation Center as they transition from hospital to home. A full range of services are provided to meet the

needs of seniors in the community, including Friedman Home Care Agency, Chaifetz Family Hospice, Grasmere on Park Adult

Day Program, Senior Choice at Home®and Home Together®. Also, the Institute on Aging offers Geriatric Assessments and Care

Management, and in response to an unfortunate but critical need, the Center for Elder Abuse Prevention opened in 2007, the

first in the state of Connecticut. In June 2016, Jewish Senior Services opened The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus on Park

Avenue, our new Household Model state-of-the-art intergenerational senior services campus which includes skilled nursing,

assisted living and memory care residences. With all programs now on campus, the innovative environment is providing a

rich social and cultural experience for seniors and has changed the concept of “nursing home” forever. The Women’s Auxiliary

proudly supported the development of The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus with a gift of over one million dollars.

The Women’s Auxiliary leadership is vital to our success. We would like to thank our co-chairs Lydia Gerard and Vanessa

Rosenberg for this evening. They have worked hard with the Gala Committee to put this wonderful event together. Their energy

and initiative are very much appreciated especially by all of the Residents whose lives are enriched and enhanced by the funds

we raise here tonight. We are grateful for everything they have done to make this evening a success. Mazel tov to Ken Wirfel

and Dick Becker and sincere thanks for all they have done for the betterment of Jewish Senior Services.

Dick and Shirley have been members of Congregation Beth El Fairfield for well over 50 years. He has been an active board member for many years and has served as treasurer. Dick has been a generous benefactor with both Beth El and Jewish Senior Services and continues his service to this day.

Dick and Shirley have three sons, Scott, Jeff and Brent and three grandchildren with whom they enjoy spending time.

Our community has been enriched and we are so very grateful to Dick for making Jewish Senior Services a priority in his life. Congratulations on this well-deserved award.

Richard D. BeckerDick Becker, this year’s Louis Lotstein Award recipient, says “My association with The Jewish Home goes back almost 40 years, from the time my Mother was in residence. My Father was a volunteer before he moved in himself, and my wife’s parents were Residents here too. So the connection is personal. Above all it’s been an honor to serve this community and be associated with a home where the facilities, the programs and the staff are all at the top of their class.”

The Lotstein Award was created to recognize leaders for their long term service to Jewish Senior Services as demonstrated by the devotion of the late Louis Lotstein. Dick has worked alongside Jewish Senior Services for almost four decades. Since 1980, he has been a dedicated board member, committee member, family member and faithful friend. He has served on the Employee Relations, Professional Services and Pastoral Services committees, where he was the Chairman for over 20 years. Dick, a Brooklyn native, came with his family to Connecticut in the 1940s. He’s a graduate of Bridgeport’s Bassick High School and holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Army in Huntsville, Alabama, where he was stationed with the Redstone Arsenal’s Ordnance Guided Missile School. Following his marriage to Shirley Deckman, also of Bridgeport, the couple moved to Fairfield more than 60 years ago and have lived there ever since.

Dick’s early positions with Republic Steel, Alcoa, Bridgeport Brass and Cerro Corporation led to his founding of the boutique international firm Metal Specialties. The company dealt in industrial metals such as indium and bismuth, as well as in materials used in solar cells that turned sunlight into energy, and was involved in the recycling of other valuable resources from scrap. After his retirement in 1996, and Shirley’s retirement from the same firm the following year, they were able

“Dick has been a part of the Jewish Senior Services family since the beginning, and has trusted us with the care of his loved ones

for two generations. He has supported every effort we have undertaken and I personally value his sage advice, his commitment

to our Jewish heritage, and the local community.”

As a graduate from Columbia University, Elyse spent years in fast-paced jobs on Wall Street. Her husband Nick had this amazing idea for a new bagel. The couple used ther Brooklyn apartment kitchen to create hundreds of test batches and the Bantam Bagel was born. The tough bagel critics

of NYC not only accepted their new twist on the bagel, but after being open for less than a year, Bantam Bagels was named one of the top 3 Bagels by the NY Daily News!

With demand growing outside of NYC, Elyse and Nick started making plans to share their mini stuffed bagels with everyone from coast to coast. They eventually brought their delicious

bites to the most influential business moguls in the United States when they appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank and landed a deal with Lori Greiner.

The story doesn’t end there! Join us for an insightful talk from Elyse Oleksakat the 2020 Spring Luncheon & Boutique event!
