We are the passionate philanthropists of Women United, helping to change the odds for women and children in our community. As committed volunteers, we are dedicated to eliminating barriers women and children face in their journey to escape poverty and achieve permanent self-sufficiency. To accomplish this mission, we have created a local force of women philanthropists through leadership, advocacy and fundraising.Since 2002, we have been leading the charge in our community and implementing breakthrough initiatives for system-wide change. From starting the collective impact initiative known as United for Children to launching a pilot program using an innovative coaching model called Mobility Mentoring®, we approach our community’s issues with solutions based in research and best practices – and we’re just getting started.

Together, we can and will create lasting change to transform the lives of women and children in Hampton Roads.

Stone Soup This event is based off the children’s book by Marcia Brown, first published in 1947. The story is about three hungry soldiers who outwit the inhabitants of a village into providing them with a feast as they learn the benefits of working together. Every February since 2012, over 150 Women United members and their families have come together for Stone Soup – each bringing ingredients to assemble 450 casseroles and 650 bag lunches. In less than two hours, 2,400 meals are prepared for our neighbors in crisis.

Day of Action As the success of our children is critical to Women United’s vision, each year our members come together to decorate over 50 bulletin boards at P.B. Young Elementary School in Norfolk for their summer program. Summer LEAP is designed to put at-risk students on track to achieve greater academic success. The colorful boards with inspirational messages welcome the over 1,000 children to their summer program and teachers are grateful for the help.

Professional Women’s Clothing Drives When you are dressed for success, you have the confidence to succeed. Many at-risk women lack professional attire for job interviews and this becomes a barrier in achieving economic independence. Women United believes that filling this gap is more than just an outfit – it gives dignity, builds confidence and empowers. Our members have collected and donated over 5,000 pieces of professional womens clothing to benefit local women.

Day of Caring Every year, Women United members roll up their sleeves to participate in United Way’s Day of Caring. Many of our local nonprofit organizations wait all year for this day as it allows them to address critical agency projects while freeing up dollars that can be used to serve those in crisis.

Adapted with permission from Economic Mobility Pathway’s Bridge to Self-Sufficiency™, empathways.org

In 2016, we sponsored the exploration

of an innovative, new approach called Mobility Mentoring®

which uses an intensive coaching model to empower and support women on their path to self-sufficiency. Grounded in science and research, this

nationally-recognized approach has proven results that we are bringing to South Hampton Roads.

Page 9: WOMEN UNITED YEAR IN REVIEW · EVE MCGRORY is a retired educator, a mother of two and a grandmother of four. A talented clarinetist, she has played with the Williamsburg Consort and

It’s all about meeting people where they are, valuing their efforts to build a better future and supporting them in that mission.

To accomplish that, we use a tool called the Bridge to Self-Sufficiency® which acts as both an assessment tool that helps us determine where a participant currently is, and a framework for charting a path to economic self-sufficiency.The goal of the Bridge is to make progress more approachable and less stressful by breaking the path to self-sufficiency into four pillars. Participants identify their current state and set goals to move up the rungs in each pillar. Those pillars include: family stability, wellbeing, financial management and dependable employment. The rungs show a participant’s movement from crisis to stability to thriving. With the support of their coach, participants face one step at a time making intentional, meaningful and lasting changes that will impact the trajectory of their life. This year, thanks to the support of Women United, the pilot program of Mobility Mentoring® will begin serving women in our community. In partnership with ForKids and Catholic Charities, the pilot will maintain the strict fidelity of the Mobility Mentoring® coaching model to test its long-term impact on a participating cohort of women. We are exceedingly proud of this latest effort to lead the charge and inspire the change in South Hampton Roads – because when we all work together, there’s nothing we can’t achieve.

UNDER THE CURRENT MODEL

70%

Olivia would be part of the 70 percent of children at risk of a developmental delay who are not being screened.

AS A RESULT,

She wouldn’t receive early interventions and would start to fall behind in school.

Her mom may quit her job to help care for Olivia or be forced to make the decision between

paying medical bills and paying for food. One visit to the emergency room could throw Olivia’s family into complete crisis.

Olivia would fail to thrive, may not graduate high school and likely fall

into the system, just like her mom.

UNDER THE NEW MODEL

Olivia will be screened early and properly diagnosed with a developmental delay. She will receive appropriate interventions

to help her succeed in school.

The Unite Us network will allow us to connect Olivia and her family to services they may need along

their path to success. If Olivia has a major issue and needs to visit the hospital, we will be there so another crisis can be avoided.

Olivia will have the support she needs to thrive and will graduate high school career-ready. Because of United Way, Olivia will be the catalyst for lifting her

family, and future generations, out of poverty.
