SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTSustainable development refers to a

development process which enhances people’s capacity to create and consume wealth on a lasting basis. It requires a socio-economic, political and cultural environment which enables people to engage in and sustain the development process.

Sustainable development is a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation meet their own needs.

Urbanization and industrialization tend to destroy biomass through deforestation. A large number of rustic people, especially women depends on this biomass for fuel, food and raw materials for certain village crafts. Devastation of the biomass invariably affects the life of rural women.

Traditionally women have made the fullest use of the non-monetized biomass based subsistence economy of the household. Men on the contrary tend to destroy those biomass based subsistence economy for cash.

Women have a different perspective on environment on the basis of their experience. Keeping in view of the inherent capabilities of women in the management of nature, their education, creativity and innovation, inventory and production management need to be strengthened their resources and strength must be channelized to their full potential to take part in the process of nation making.

One of the outstanding environmentalists is Rachel Carson. Rachel Carson was a scientist, writer, and ecologist. Rachel Carson was inspired by her biology teacher so she switched her major to biology. She is famous for her book The Silent Spring. The book is about what man has done to nature and eventually to himself.

MARIA CHERKASOVA

Maria Cherkasova(1938-) is a journalists, ecologist, and director of Centre for Independent Ecological Programmes (CIEP). In 1960's, she began to work for the Red Data Book for the Department of Environmental Protection Institute. She researched and preserved rare species until she became the editor of USSR Red Data Book.

Perhaps no woman alive fights harder for the rights of female farmers than Vandana Shiva, an Indian philosopher, physicist, ecofeminist and environmental activist. Shiva is an outspoken critic of industrialized globalized agriculture and proponent of traditional, sustainable farming methods.

Dr. Wangari Maathai

The first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr.Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, a grassroots environmental organization advocating for human rights, good governance and peaceful democratic change through environmental stewardship

Narmada Bachao Andolan announced the arrival of the India Greens, protesting against destructive development. One of the largest and most successful environmental campaigns led by Medha Patkar, Narmada Bachao Andolan began with a wide developmental agenda, questioning the very rationale of large dam projects in India

Sugatha KumariA committed conservationist, Sugathakumari served as the secretary of the Society for Conservation of Nature, Thiruvananthapuram. In the late seventies she led a successful nationwide movement, known as Save Silent Valley, to save some of the oldest natural forests in the country, the Silent Valley in Kerala, from submersion as a result of a planned hydroelectric project.

Mayilamma

Mayilamma, a 50-year-old tribal widow, has been at the forefront of the people's agitation against the multinational Coca-Cola, in the small village of Plachimada in Perumatty panchayat, in Kerala's Palakkad district. The agitation recently completed 1,000 days.

The growth of technology and the processes of commercialization, industrialization globalization affect men and women differently. With out women real development cannot take roots. Concern for women and efforts to main stream them occupy the centre of every development .
