Here's a rule of thumb that you may want to consider before taking the plunge into any commercial enterprise. It seems to have worked out pretty well for Friday Harbor's Lynn Danaher.

"For every project, you ask yourself what's it going cost and then you add 30 percent, and you figure out what the income stream is you expect, and you deduct 30 percent," Danaher explains. "After that, if it still makes sense, then it's a possibility."

The principle of Archipelago Properties, Danaher devel-oped the formula noted above after spending the better part of the past two decades turning straw into gold. But it hasn't always been that way.

In fact, Danaher clearly recalls that day in 1989 when the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound and a rewarding life as a commercial fisherman went belly up. In the aftermath, she lost a profession, an income, a home, and, ultimately, her marriage fell apart.

"It brought our whole world to an end," she says. But the end of one world often turns out to be the begin-

ning of the next, if one keeps trudging along. And five years later, Danaher found herself in Friday

Harbor, and in the right place at the right time. She had a United States Coast Guard masters license, a 38-foot boat and then signed on with Warner Brothers Pictures to haul the cast and crew of “Free Willy 2” from location to loca-tion. Opportunity knocked, and Danaher answered.

The rest of the pieces then fell into place.Anticipating a surge in the popularity of the killer whales

that frequent the San Juans, Danaher founded a whale-watch company, San Juan Excursions, and then sold it in 2000. She invested the profits into a different type of enter-prise, first purchasing and then renovating a business park

on Malcolm Street that had seen better days.

Now, as owner of Surina Business Park and Star Storage, Danaher welcomes any opportunity to help others get a leg up in the business world. It takes a practical approach, attention to detail and discipline to nurture a business and to stay ahead of the game, she said.

“You’ve got to watch your numbers and be realistic about your projections and

your expenses,” she said. “And you treat your customers like they’re golden.”

And when you’re able, you also invest in your commu-nity, she said.

In addition to restoring five separate buildings in town, Danaher commissioned the mural that covers the side of the ACE Hardware building as a “gift to the town”. She’s a founding member of Friday Harbor’s Soroptimist International chapter and provides the group with a storage unit at no charge, and nowadays rides an electric-powered bike just about everywhere she goes to contribute to the cause of reducing the world’s carbon footprint, and to get some exercise, too.

Though she now has a bit more freedom to spend on personal pursuits, Danaher stays busy refining ideas she believes could benefit the town. A plan for improved park-ing, utilizing her Malcolm Street properties, is just one example.

“I like to say I’m a problem solver,” she said. “I think that’s the funnest part of what I like to do... helping people to solve problems.”

As for succeeding in business, Danaher cites a simple equation: “You show up. You make your payments on time, and you budget realistically. It’s that simple.”

Their motivations and interests are many, but their com-munity spirit and compassion are singular.

As businesswomen, teachers, health care givers and moth-ers, the local women (and one man) now part of Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor know the importance of making money to stay in business, keeping their jobs and feeding their families, and they know that making money is not the only thing that makes a community livable.

According to current president Heather Spaulding, “Soroptimists know the health of their community depends on giving back.”

Founded in 1996 by Pat Hansen and 40 other prominent women, Friday Harbor Soroptimist now fields 85 members who work year-round on an array of projects and programs.

“All of our members are busy, active women who are com-mitted to helping others — some of them in two or three professional or charitable organizations,” says Spaulding.

Specific SI community assistance programs include the Family Emergency Fund, the Cancer Treatment Transportation Project, the Women’s Opportunity Awards to assist women to overcome personal difficulties, scholar-ships for local high school graduates to continue their edu-cation, and five achievement and volunteer awards to local women and girls. Soroptimists also mentor high school girls through the S-Club, which engages in fundraising for causes the girls themselves think up and embrace.

And you’ll find Soroptimists volunteering at, and con-tributing to, more than a dozen local projects and events: the county Fair, the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Children’s Festival, the 4th of July Pig War Picnic and many others.

The “international” in the Soroptimist name is an impor-tant part of the mission of the group.

Through the Cafe Femenino Coffee Project, SI in part-nership with the Cafe Femenino Foundation and the Local Goods coffee company brings women-grown, women-owned, organic, fair trade coffee to the San Juans.

Every year, on Human Rights Day (Dec. 10), the presi-dent of Soroptimist International invites Soroptimists to support a project which advances the organization’s mis-sion. The 2012 project is Birthing in the Pacific, aimed at reducing the risk of maternal and infant mortality in Papua New Guinea by improving the maternity skills of midwives and nurses in this resource-poor country.

Spaulding points out that members benefit substantially from the fulfillment, community recognition, networking

and friendships the orga-nization provides, but she insists, “We do it because it’s fun, because we’re a com-munity of doers who want to make our commmunity a better place.”

Asked to summarize what Soroptimist means to her, Liz Illg says, “emphasizing

the leadership and status of women and girls as a way to enhance the vitality of the whole community.”

Business may sometimes seem like it’s all about the num-bers. So, what’s love got to do with it?

For interior designer Jenny Prescott, now in her third year as a purveyor of fine antiques and decorative arts in one of Friday Harbor’s most historic homes, the answer is quite a lot.

“I fell in love with this house,” Prescott said of the former Roarke House on Argyle Avenue, which, with the help of brother Brian, she restored and refurbished, and then opened as a retail shop that goes by the name of Acanthus. “It’s a thrill to me just to be able to show it to everyone.”

Born into a family with a long tradition of antique col-lecting, Prescott got bit by the bug at an early age.

“I fell in love with my grandmother’s house and all the antiques she had when I was very, very young,” she said. “And I have a real passion for furniture.”

Raised on Mercer Island, Prescott summered in the San Juans at Cape San Juan, where her parents built a cabin back in 1967. Later, she would parlay her passion for art and antiques into a bachelor’s degree in fine arts at Cornish College in Seattle. She then took a job as a buyer for a Bellevue-based company with seven retail outlets in the Seattle area and began a career of constant travel in the U.S. and abroad in search of merchandise.

At the same time, her background in interior design allowed her to take on and complete several high-profile commercial projects, including a home on Seattle’s “Street of Dreams”, a couple of senior centers in need of a facelift and a number of buildings on a college campus in North Dakota.

To succeed in the business world, Prescott says that skill, flexibility and understanding the task at hand will over-shadow any issue related to gender at every turn.

“You’ve got to be able to work as a team and be willing to take some criticism, and to tweak whatever it is you’re working on here and there,” she said. “If you can do that, then you get treated with respect.”

But the world of business also can demand long hours, lots and lots of travel and setting aside one’s personal life

when a project is at hand. After making a name for herself professionally, Prescott

decided it was time to take a break from globetrotting and to bring her passion for fine art, antiques, history (another love) and interior design under one roof.

Acanthus is the result. Although on the fringe of Friday Harbor’s commercial

core, Prescott says business has picked up as more visitors are directed her way and islanders realize there’s a new enterprise inside the remodeled historic home.

“Sometimes it’s a bit slow, but I’m not taking that person-ally at all,” she said. “I’ve got lots of support. I know from the outside it looks like a home but almost everything here is for sale.”

And Prescott enjoys sharing her passion for each and every piece with any customer that walks through the door.

“Being able to share the history is so cool to me,” she said. “And it feels so good to know where something goes when it leaves here.”

I was born and raised in New York City. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Saint John’s University and Masters Degree of Social Work from Hunter College at CUNY.

Nina Le Baron combines 30 years of business experience with lifelong passion for art. She’s an architect and interior designer, a glass artist, a gallery owner, and an entre-

preneur. “My varied interests have kept my architectural ideas fresh and me interested in what

I do,” Le Baron said.In high school in La Jolla, Calif., she wanted to be an artist, but her businessman

father (Marshall Pellar, inventor of barbecue seasoning for potato chips) told her, “Artists don’t make money. Have a professional career that involves both creativity and making money.”

So she went to Rhode Island School of Design in the 1970’s, where she met Dale Chihuly, then a teacher at RISD, and took architecture, interior design and glass art.

At RISD, she made her first foray into business, making stained glass windows. She tried marketing them, but didn’t sell many, so she took her combination of artistic sensibility and architectural talent to New York, achieved her American Institute of Architects professional designation, and developed a successful practice as an architect and designer, first in New York for Skidmore, Owings, Merrill and other firms, then in San Francisco before opening her own design and consulting business, which she suc-cessfully transferred to Friday Harbor in 2002.

The dawn of the 21st century and the computer age convinced her she needed to use the new technologies, such as computer-aided design. The class she took didn’t give her the in-depth knowledge she wanted, so she hired the instructor to tutor her.

Computers have become an integral part of her professional, business and personal lives. “I’m amazed how important technology has become to both my designs and my business,” Le Baron said. “The 3-D mod-

eling and ease of revision and transmission of ideas to clients has made me more effective as a designer, and the accounting, inventory, website and customer communication aspects of computer use are critical to my success as a businesswoman.”

Opening Gallery 9 has introduced Le Baron into store-based retail sales for the first time. She discovered she liked selling good art while selling sculpture (“$50,000 worth in one year,” she said) at the Sculpture Garden at Roche Harbor. “I found that I liked dealing with people who appreciate art, and I learned the balance between helping people choose art for their home and actual salesmanship,” Le Baron said.

Gallery 9 represents 27 local artists, exhibiting paintings, photographs, small sculptures, jewelry, home decor and cloth-ing in the space formerly occupied by Garuda & I on First Street in Friday Harbor. Le Baron says the store did well during the summer and she hopes putting the art for sale on-line will “help pay the bills” all year long.

Part of Le Baron’s optimism is based upon negotiating a lease with a variable, percentage-based rent that increases during the busy summer months and decreases during the slower winter months.

“As a businesswoman, to be sustainable, I have to take into account the ups and downs of an art market reliant on tour-ism for sales volume,” she says.

“Being involved in the vibrant arts community of the islands makes every day at the gallery enjoyable,” Le Baron contin-ues. “But I pay close attention to the business details, too.”

At lot of people ask me what we do here at Frontline Call Center. The

best example I can think of is anytime you place an order over the phone, or need support for your electronic products or computer you are probably talking to a call center agent. There are lots of di erent types of call centers and call center agents throughout the world and I’m sure you’ve had good experiences and bad experiences. Our vision here at Frontline Call Center is to foster an environment which consistently delivers a level of customer service that is above the customer’s expectation.

Since we started in January of 2005, our main focus has been on providing outstanding technical support and customer support for companies that need additional sta ng to take care of their customers. Our culture is one of excellence and our high performance team continues to grow and expand our capabilities.

Our call center sta is combined of in house agents at our o ce and also those who work from home. We have employees throughout 14 di erent states but our core group is located here on Orcas Island where we handle more supervisory and management roles.

In March 2012 we were able to expand our operations and open an o ce in Friday Harbor. We are happy to be rapidly expanding. We have eight employees and are growing.

Frontline Call Center has created software that gives both our clients and employees a ‘Community’ feeling with the tools that allow them to succeed. From training videos and resource material, to real time call logs and reporting. Because most of our business is done ‘virtually’, this is something we use every day to communicate with people who we rarely get to meet face to face.

The reason we are able to have a business like this in beautiful Friday Harbor is technology. We have a system that allows calls to be routed anywhere that someone has high speed internet. The other factor to our success is the people at Frontline Call Center who work hard every day to ensure that customers are happy and things are running well.

Tami Ashcraft’s credentials in auto repair began when as a little girl her grandfather Wally Oldham taught her to learn tools. Being in San Diego, she learned not only about cars, but also the mechanics of boating.Point Loma high school was her secondary alma mater. She gained three years of auto mechanics experience in high school. She learned enough to master the seas. In her twenties she left the continent and sailed around the world. She and her ance decided to deliver a boat from Tahiti toSan Diego. They ran into a massive storm. Their sailboat was de-masted and her ance was lost. Nevertheless, Tami jerried up enough pieces to make it to Hilo, Hawaii, over 2,000 miles away.“Red Sky in the Mourning” written by Tami with the help of a friend on the island, Suzea McGearhart, tells the story of the stuff this woman in business is made of. You’d think Tami’s early life would call for taking it easy…No way.Kelli and Brooke are Ed and Tami’s two daughters in Fri-day Harbor high school. Soccer, softball, basketball, bik-ing and hiking are the girls favorite sports. The spirited youths are aways cheered on by their parents who never fail to pitch in to help with school and team activities.

Tami certainly sets an exam-ple of reliance, from starting to nish line.

By Stephanie Johnson O’DayMore women have full time jobs

than ever before in history. With so many of our waking hours spent at work, it is more important than ever to love what you do — so if you do not love working for someone else, maybe it’s time to start your own business. Women these days are pulled in all directions and believe me, I know it is not easy to be all things to all people. But we try.

Women are resourceful, resilient, and competent. But what does it take for an independent woman to have a successful business? There are many hidden costs associated with owning a busi-ness. Things to take into consideration whether you should start your own business are:

Need. Does your product or service fill a need in the community? Business Structure: sole proprietor, partner-ship, corporation? Employees: how many will you need and at what hourly wage?

Overhead Costs: location, space needed, cost per foot. Utility costs. Insurance Needs. State, federal and local taxes on income and employees. Start-up capital needs. Funding sources. And personality.

Here are some key personality ingredients for the service industry I try to keep in mind, which I have learned from individuals far more intelligent and successful than I over the years:

■ Look your clients/customers in the eye and really listen. There are always two sides to every story. Hear them both.

■ Respect everyone. It takes all kinds of people to make this big wide world go round.

■ Hard Work. You are there to solve other people’s problems. Give it your best. Stamina. Never give up. If you believe in something, fight for it.

■ Follow through. Do what you say you’re going to do. Finish what you start. Always take the high road; if you jump in the mud with pigs you get dirty.

■ Time Off. Take lots of time to recharge and reboot, then get back on the saddle.

I know many successful women who have started their own businesses. All are good at what they do, and most everyone has been anxious and a bit fearful of taking the plunge. But take it from someone who has jumped — it’s wonderful to be your own boss. Just make sure you have done your homework, and the business pencils out eco-nomically. There are many hidden costs in a business, and your groundwork will definitely pay off.

And oh yes, don’t ever get into the restaurant business. Dana Bunefounderhair designernail artist

For nineteen years, David and I have the pleasure of owning e Toy Box. We strive to nd quality toys with lots of

play value as well as those incredibly funny novelties. From our tiny beginnings in 350 square feet on the top oor of Cannery Landing to our now 1200 square feet on First Street, we continue to boast the largest toy selection in the islands!

We appreciate the support that this caring community has a orded us over the years. We welcome suggestions and ideas.

Come join us on November 10 for Neighborhood Toy Store Day. We will introduce the new Best Toys for Kids list. Many of the items will be available at e Toy Box. Free cookies and surprise discounts at the register will be available.

By Friday Harbor Mayor Carrie LacherWhen I was campaigning to be mayor of Friday Harbor,

it didn’t occur to me that I would somehow be seen as a trailblazer. It wasn’t until I was asked during a Journal inter-view at the county Fair that I realized I had the potential to “shatter a glass ceiling.”

Even so, this was not the focus of my campaign nor has it been the focus of my term. To me, running for mayor was a natural evolution in serving my community. After all, there were already many strong role models of women in local government. In fact, it was county Auditor Milene Henley who first encouraged me to run for town council to fill the position being vacated by another talented woman, Debbie Emery.

The town has a long tradition of women involved in government. Council members have included women since 1988, when Edith Dickinson began serving. Town Treasurer Wendy Picinich is currently in her 8th term. And I still hear wonderful tales about nearly 90-year old Betty Gilson, who lead the town’s planning commission for several years.

I do think women can bring something special to the table, especially in these fractured times when government is often viewed with suspicion. Women in general tend to be better listeners. We tend to strive a little harder for consensus. We tend to prioritize helping. We’re a little bet-ter at nurturing, a little more attuned to community. All of that helps government be more accessible and that’s a very good thing.

But when it comes to the work of the town council, I don’t think our gender balance really matters. Much more impor-tantly, our council has worked hard to be collaborative and transparent; to treat each other and fellow residents with respect; and to always work towards the best interests of the community. I think each of us brings something important to the council chambers and we balance each other well.

So while gender may be something of note when review-ing candidate qualifications, I don’t believe it should be the

determining factor. What is more essen-tial is an elected official’s skills set and how they use those skills to be of service.

I have certainly enjoyed my moniker of “First Woman Mayor” but I have enjoyed even more serving our town and I look forward to doing that for many more years.

I have lots of plans, visions, ideas and tons of passion for our community. But you know, that simply means I have a lot

in common with all the other women in local government doing what we can to make our home the best it can be.
