Ministry Corner—Alzheimer’s Association Support

Group Meetings God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers. ~ Helen Keller

Location: St. Alphonsus Parish Ministry Center, Room 104 When: The third Monday of each month Time: 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Facilitator: Wendy Benkowski, cell: 414-899-7342

What happens in a support group? Do I need it? Isn’t it just one more thing to do? Will it just be sharing sadness? The goal of the group is to make the members more skilled and less stressed so life is better. You can share as little or as much as you wish. There is a presence of collective wisdom, everyone in the room has been there or is there; you might see heads nodding with understanding as you speak.

Dementia is not a memory problem; it is brain failure. There are four truths about dementia: 1. At least two parts of your brain are dying; 2. Nothing stops or cures it; 3. It keeps progressing and changing; 4. It is terminal. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia.

To be successful care partners we have choices. Can we let go of what was, what should be, how the person should be, how we should be and live in the moment we are given? Many times we are surprised or frustrated. This is a hard journey, BUT you can be rewarded with moments of joy. It’s all about relationship; a relationship with the person you care about living with dementia. They are precious and unique, they cannot change; you have to make choices.

The Care Partner Coaching materials in the group are resourced by the Alzheimer’s Association– Wisconsin Chapter (www.alz.org/wi), Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care, LLC (www.Teepasnow.com), and Creating Moments of Joy Along the Alzheimer’s Journey, a book by Jolene Brackey,

Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in the nation and affects more than 45,000 people here in Southeastern Wisconsin. For locations of Alzheimer’s Association Support Groups in Mil-waukee County and throughout the state of Wisconsin, call the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 HOT-LINE at 800-272-3900.

Question Of The Week Theme: Lent calls us to conversion. Question for Youth: What needs changing in your life right now? How will you invite God into that change? Question for Adults: What steps are you taking this Lent to make sure that your faith bears fruit in good works?

No Gluten Communion

Station Saint Al’s is now offering a no gluten Com-

munion station. The station is located in Sec-

tion Five. This is the station over by the choir

area. There will be hosts with wheat and the

no gluten hosts offered at this station. The no

gluten station will be clearly marked with a

square medallion. If you wish to receive the no

gluten hosts you will need to sit in that area

when you come to Mass. The hosts will be

kept in a separate ciborium and placed in the

tabernacle after the last Mass on Sunday. We

will be working with all Sacristans and Eucha-

ristic Ministers on the logistics of offering the

no gluten Eucharist. We are so happy to make

sure that all St. Alphonsus parishioners and

guests are able to receive at Mass.

Please Submit Completed

School Scene A beautiful third grade tradition is to have a Doll Baptism. This really brings to life this im-portant first step in belonging to God’s family. It is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation. Most students were baptized as babies and have no memory of their own baptism.

Once the babies (dolls) are chosen, they are given Chris-tian names. This past January, we welcomed Mary Catherine and John Paul. Parents and godparents are assigned. The rest of the class acts as family and friends.

Father Britto does an excellent job of explaining the symbolism and meaning of each part of the sacrament. Students learn that the water, candle, white garment, and sacred oil all have signifi-cance. It is a wonderful enrichment of our study of the seven sacraments. The students’ parents are invited to join us in the church. After the baptism, there is a small celebration in the Community Room with cake and beverages. - Anne Ladenthin

Book Sale Dona-

tions Requested! The St. Alphonsus Home and School Association will be hold-ing a new and gently-used book sale in early May. We are cur-rently asking families to donate their books to help support this fundraiser. Books can be dropped off in the box outside the Main Office or near the school entry from church. Dona-tions will be taken until Tuesday, April 21, and the sale will run after Masses the weekend of May 1-3, 2020.

If you have any questions, contact Kelty Che-lius at [email protected] or 460-2928.

Girl Scout Cookie Sales Girl Scout Troop 8611 (St. Alphonsus 6th Grade Troop) will be selling Girl Scout cookies after all Masses next weekend, March 21/22, in the Community Room.

In my last Pastoral Sharing article, I said I would be writing additional articles regarding the Roman Missal that the priest uses. However, I recently received an item from the Archdiocese entitled “Liturgical & Pastoral Suggestions in the event of a viral outbreak of the 'coronavirus'.” This article was intended for our Eucharistic Ministers, and I thought it would be a good thing to pass along to you to help put your mind at ease knowing that we will be following these pre-cautions. Let's hope that a fix will come forward from our medical professionals soon, but in the meantime we will follow these suggestions.

March 2020

Concerns about the covid-19 virus “coronavirus” have raised questions regard-ing our participation in the liturgy. The following suggestions are meant to be helpful considerations for parish leadership.

A. All ministers of communion ordinary and extraordinary, are to be reminded of the importance of proper hand-washing before and after distributing com-munion and of proper technique to be used in distributing communion. This may be done in formation sessions or by written memo.

1. The person responsible for preparing the gifts before Mass is to be reminded to wash his or her hands carefully prior to touching the hosts and pouring the wine. If that person is ill, a substitute must be found. 2. Parishes may have bottles of alcohol-based hand sanitizer available for com-munion ministers. For example, these may be placed in the front pews (or other discreet but convenient place) for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to use on their way to the sanctuary and after ministering communion. 3. Ordinary Ministers are reminded to wash their hands properly before the beginning of Mass. In addition, a bottle of hand sanitizer may be placed at the credence table (or other discreet but convenient place) for the Ordinary Minis-ters to wash their hands after the Sign of Peace. 4. Ministers are to use proper technique in distributing communion, for example: i. Care must be taken not to touch the mouth, tongue, or teeth of a communi-cant choosing to receive communion on the tongue. If there is any significant accidental contact, ministers should change the hand with which they are dis-tributing communion. If there is gross contamination, the minister is to wash his/her hands. ii. It is the decision of the pastor whether or not Communion will be distribut-ed under one or both species. The choice to receive from the Cup or to refrain

from the Cup is a personal choice. The Church teaches that Christ is present, whole and entire, in either species. (CCC#1377). iii. When ministering the Cup, ministers must take care to wipe both the in-side and outside lip of the chalice, to turn the chalice before the next person receives, and to move the purificator for each wipe so the same location on the purificator is not used over and over. iv. Ministers are reminded that self-intinction is not allowed. 5. The person responsible for the care of the vessels after Mass is to ensure that they are properly cleaned. After being purified according to the rubrics, Mass vessels should be washed with hot, soapy water. 6. Purificators are also to be laundered according to liturgical norms. After soak-ing in water (which is then poured in the sacrarium), the purificators are laun-dered normally. Hot water and laundry detergent may be used.

B) While there has never been a documented case of an infectious disease being transmitted through the sharing of the Cup, the parishioners should be regularly reminded that if one is ill he/she should stay home, or at least refrain from the Cup. Such reminders can be made in the bulletin, by announcement, or in formation sessions, such as RCIA, preparation for First Communion, or adult formation groups. They are also to be reminded that self-intinction is never allowed.

C) Parishioners should also be reminded that they may choose to refrain from physical contact during Mass if they are ill or experiencing symptoms. An an-nouncement at the beginning of Mass should include a statement that some- one's choosing to refrain from physical contact at the Sign of Peace should not be construed as an indication of rudeness. A nod of the head or a slight bow are acceptable substitutes for physical contact.

Please be assured that we will do our best to adhere to these suggestions. At this past weekend liturgies, it was announced before Mass that Fr Britto has made the decision to refrain from offering the Blood of Christ (Cup) at all litur-gies until further notice. Let us pray that this virus will be kept under control and that a cure will come very soon.

Blessings to all of you, and may you all be kept well.

-Deacon James Leggett

Third Sunday of Lent We give the definition of ourselves over to so many things. We allow our society, friends, family, work, social groups, ethnicity, and even institutions define, classify, and color how we perceive ourselves. When we listen predominantly to the voices of others, we lose touch with what is happening within our own inner voice. If we listen carefully within, we can easily discover that we are in want and need. We know our incompleteness and also know that loneliness, sadness, and self-images can propel us outward in attempts to fill those gaps. We can become not only victims of our own prejudices but can find ourselves overly self-indulgent in things that can only satisfy for a short time, if at all. It is no wonder that money and power are things that are so fervently sought after. As long as we can keep a steady supply going, the illusion of fulfillment and satisfaction can falsely persuade us as craftily as a master magician’s act. We live with illusions not truth. It is no wonder, then, that some of the wealthiest folks are also really the unhappiest. Whether we admit it, the lies we live and pursue will ulti-mately expose our superficiality. We all have to wrestle with who we are and what gives our lives purpose and meaning. Learn to listen more deeply, not to what others are saying about you, but to what God is echoing in your heart. We can easily get confused and misunderstand, not only about who we are but who God is. Even the disciples and the Samaritan woman at the well missed the point Jesus was trying to make. There is only one Person who can satisfy the deepest yearnings and longings of our hearts — Jesus the Messi-ah. It is not the work of corporate America that will lead us to happiness or greatness but the work of the soul. We continue to resist acknowledging this and are happier in our world of misunderstanding and illu-sion. The life-giving water we truly need doesn’t come from the source of a well but from the Source of Life. Only God can reveal the truth of our sinfulness, the superficiality of our pursuits, and the illusions we hold so dear. Only Jesus can save us from ourselves and give us what we really need. If only our heads can catch up with where our hearts know they need to be, then will we find real contentment and life! ©LPi
